Oklahoma City International Folk Dancers
Welcome to Oklahoma City International Folk Dancers (OKCIFD)
The Oklahoma City International Folk Dancers is a non-profit group for the enjoyment and preservation of recreational folk-dancing. International folk-dancing includes the traditional social dances of many countries and cultures, done to their authentic music. They are danced in a variety of formations, e.g. short lines, circles and couples. Many dances are easy to learn, you don't need to come with a partner and it's fun for people of all ages and nationalities. If you like watching it, you'll love doing it! We delight in sharing our dance and music with others. Dances are usually taught by local teachers, while guest instructors teach at workshops organized from time to time throughout the year. Beginners are welcome, no previous dance experience necessary. Except for costume parties, dress is casual. Wear comfortable, non-marking shoes. The OKCIFD meets every Monday evening at the Unitarian Church at N.W. 13th Street and Dewey. We encourage newcomers to come at the beginning of the evening so as to take advantage of the teaching sessions. Classes for beginners start at 7:00 p.m., followed by classes for intermediate/advanced dancers at 8:30 p.m. From 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. there is request dancing. Request dancing is usually done without instruction.

A Glossary of Dance Terms
by Jim Battisson
This glossary was written for International folk dancers in Australia. It includes a reasonable selection of terms used in Australian colonial and bush dancing as well as most of the terms used by local international folk dance teachers. There is no standard set of dance terms and I am not attempting to define (impose) one but rather to record the current Australian usage. Since the meaning of a keyword is sometimes dependent on the type of dance being described I will show the keyword’s context for the meaning in the form: keyword (context):
    Meaning ...
When a keyword is not the first word in a key phrase, the keyword is shown bold followed by the phrase in italics:
When a keyword has associated words that are optional, then the optional words are in square brackets. eg, hey, [straight] hey or quadrille [set] All directions of movement in this glossary are relative to the current position of the dancer unless otherwise stated.

The State Folk Dance Conspiracy: Fabricating a National Folk Dance

H.R. 645 IH: The Promenade Act
Some people just don't get it.
Introduction
Modern Western square dance clubs are coordinating across the U.S. to have square dancing declared the state folk dance of all fifty states. At the time of this writing, there are twenty-two states that have passed legislation designating square dance as the "state folk dance." Many of these bills were passed after 1988, which was the last time that a bill was in the U.S. Congress to designate square dancing as the national folk dance. It appears that having failed on a national level, modern Western square dancers are trying to accomplish the same thing on a state by state basis. By contrast, traditional square dances are usually open to any member of the community, with no membership or certification required. Since most traditional communities get by with no more than a few dozen calls in their repertoire, lessons are not required, although some dances may feature a short workshop before the dance or "walk throughs" during the dance itself. The dancers wear street clothes, not square dance costumes. Finally, true folk dances are always linked to a folk music tradition. Recorded music is a rarity at traditional dances.

113. The Stomp Happy Tribe
Band that plays traditional folk tunes in a rock and roll way, aimed mainly at barn dance/ceilidh dancing.
http://www.stomphappy.org.uk/
So what is it?
The Stomp Happy Tribe is a well established Ceilidh band based in Cambridge.
  • Going for over 15 years!
  • Experienced in balls, weddings, parties, corporate events, etc.
  • Rock 'n' roll 'n' Folk Ceilidh band with attitude
  • Own P.A. and willing to travel
  • 6 piece band (currently)
    • Bernard - Caller extraordinare and radio guru
    • Richard - Guitarist. He's finger-picking good.
    • Stephen - Bass player and leader
    • Paul - Mandolin (a.k.a. "Whatever the hell that thing is")
    • James - Violinist and purveyor of musical instruments
    • Adam - Drummer and all-round nice guy

Bern, Richard, Stephen, Paul, James, Adam.
    I saw you ages ago!
Yes, we've been going for over 15 years. Of course, the line-up has changed over the years, but we still play in the way we used to. If you saw us in the past, you might be interested in seeing how the band line-up has changed over the years.
So what do you look like now?
We have some photos on this page.
    What do you sound like?
You might like to download an MP3 of the Dashing White Sergeant. You'll hear that we play traditional tunes, but in a not-so-traditional way. Not all ceilidh bands are the same; many are more at home at an acoustic folk club than playing in a large venue for a wedding or party. We play reggae, we jump about, we rock.
    What dances/songs do you do?

The cost of the workshop will be $8 on its own or there is a combined fee of $15 for both workshop and evening dance. (As usual the price for the evening dance on its own is $10.)

Houston, Texas The Polka and Cajun Dance Site for Texas
Card courtesy of Betty Beyer, Northside Printing, Houston, 713-681-0303 Hi, and welcome to our site! We like to dance. We dance polka and Cajun, and C/W swing when polka and Cajun aren’t handy. We dance mostly within a three-hour radius of Houston, and also go out of state for polka festivals. In 2002 we reached our goal of dancing in all 50 states. We have danced in 277 dance venues in Texas and 114 in other states This site is intended to help others learn about polka and Cajun dancing in Texas. You might begin by reviewing the History of Polka music and dance. If history is not your bag, you can go directly to Polka in Texas for an overview. A summary of historic Texas Dance Halls is included. Recommended reading for the Texas polka buff. See the article about the Praha Pout (or feast) which has become a part of Texas legend and lore.
