Types of dance
In Austria, folk dances in general are known as Folkloret¤nze , i.e. "folklore dances", whereas the Austrian type of folk dance is known as Volkstanz (literally "folk dance"). Figure dancing is a type of dance where different figures are put together with a certain tune and given a name. Round dancing , which includes the waltz , the polka Zwiefacher etc, involves basic steps which can be danced to different tunes. In folk dancing, the waltz and the polka are in a slightly different form to standard ballroom dancing Sprachinselt¤nze (literally "language island dances") are those dances which are actually by German -speaking minorities (see German as a Minority Language ) living outside Austria, but which originate in Austria, e.g. those of Transylvania . Dance Etiquette
Dance Etiquette for New and Old Dancers
This etiquette list was compiled by Leslie Hyll from various items. It has been structured to apply to international folk dancing, but pieces may have value to contra, square, swing, vintage, or other types of social dance. The reader is welcome to plagerize, modify, adapt, add to, or delete from this list to make it useful for whatever genre. Every once in a while we all need to be reminded.
  • Always join a line dance at the end of the line. (90% of the time, the left end is the end. Watch out for those dances whose ends are on the right!) Always join a contra line or longways set at the foot of the set (the end away from the music). Respect other dancers and leaders and treat everyone with courtesy. Do not offend others with your high flung legs, or overzealous endeavors to help others who may hesitate, by pulling, grabbing, or pushing them, or by speaking loudly or harshly to them. Be quiet and attentive to the instructor even though you know what is being explained or you are not dancing. Perhaps someone else needs to be briefed.

The Australian Colonial and Folk Dancers are a group of enthusiastic dancers whose main aim is, as our name suggests, to promote Colonial and Folk dancing. We demonstrate and teach dance in order that others may experience a part of Australian history and the joy of dance. Through our dances, we try to reflect the many different influences that have acted upon our Australian dance heritage since early settlement. Our members have varied dance backgrounds and bring to the group a wealth of experience in different styles of dance, including Irish, Scottish, International, Playford, Contra, Ballroom and, of course, Australian Bush Dancing. We are veterans of many performances, both in Sydney and country areas, and have participated in a number of Folkloric Festivals at the Sydney Opera House. Dancing to either our own tapes or live music, the group is available for functions from a formal dinner to a fete opening. With a choice of either day or evening costume, the Australian Colonial and Folk Dancers will add colour and elegance to any occasion with a colonial or heritage theme.

Our twice-weekly classes, taught by three experienced community dancers, mix flying Scottish leaps with flowing English figures and wild contra swings. Here, new dancers find their feet and student musicians find their instruments, joined by faculty, staff, alumni, and community members. Luckily, the Physical Education department recognizes that folk dancing is exercise and will grant you a semester's worth of PE credit, should you desire it, for coming to a semester of our classes. All of our classes have live music, produced mostly by fellow students and recent alumni. The music centers on fiddle and keyboard, but we mix in whistles, accordion, bodhran, electronic bass, cello, and clarinet. Since dancing is about more than classes

International Folk Dancing is held at the Presbyterian Church (aren't you proud of me? I can spell it!) on 11th and G Streets in Arcata, California. Teaching on most nights begins at 7:30 P.M., and general dancing usually begins at 9:00 P.M.(or so). We ask for $3.00 at the door. If you are strapped for cash, or are uncertain, come in and have fun. If you have $3.00 worth of fun, pay us when you can. The money goes to rent the building, for upkeep on the equipment, and to pay a small amount to our teachers, who deserve a lot more.
First Friday of the Month is an exception to the rule. It starts with finger food and music at 7:00 P.M., please bring food if you plan to eat any. General dancing usually begins around 8:00 P.M. or so. The music for the dance party is live, featuring two or more bands. We charge $3.00 at the door for these special nights to help pay for the rental of the hall, and for other events. After the bands perform, there is a general jam session where other musicians are welcome to come and play folk dance music. We dance until 11:00 p.m., when we all either collapse or we're wired and we go somewhere else for hot chocolate or sodas (or french fries!). If you can, come visit!
