of traditional and folk arts through education, outreach,
publication and performance.

F ounded in 1966 , the purpose of the Seattle Folklore Society is to preserve and foster awareness and appreciation of folk and traditional arts in the Seattle area. Our non-profit folk organization has one of the largest and most stable memberships in the country. The SFS is a member of Folk Alliance . We produce folk music concerts, dances, song circles, camps and a newsletter, the SFS Flyer. Many of our members are active concertgoers, dancers and players of the acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, ukulele, and other folk intstruments.
SFS Flyer
T he SFS Flyer - one of the benefits of becoming a member - is mailed to about 1,200 members, most of whom are in the Puget Sound area. It contains information on upcoming Seattle Folklore Society concerts, song circles, dances, and volunteer opportunities. A monthly calendar of events around the area, free members' ads (the "Unclassifieds"), and articles complete the Flyer. Are you promoting a concert, dance or other event of interest to our members?

While many folk dances are associated with weddings, they are also woven around the activities of fishing, planting, harvesting etc. Folk dances differ from classical dances in many ways. The tempo, rhythm and gestures of classical dance s are complicated and require long and arduous practice. But folk dances are simple and spontaneous. Since there are no complex or ritual gestures and movements, they can be learnt more easily. Folk dances are passed down from one generation to another, and, although the artistes have a great deal of liberty in performance, the basic form remains the same. Folk dances are performed singly or in groups. Group dances are more common, reflecting community or collective thinking. Singing is an essential part of these dances.
