Native American Musical Instruments
Singing is at the center of much traditional Native American (now also known as "First Nations" or "First People") music. There are, however, several instruments that are integral to the music, often as accompaniment. Drums, rattles, and flutes are the most common traditional instruments played, but certain peoples have distinct instrumental traditions and legends related to their instruments. Locally found material is used to make these instruments. The following is a brief overview of the instruments.
Drums
Simple skin drum These drums are used in the central area east of the Rockies and in the Northern Plains. They can consist of a singled tanned skin tied to four stakes that are planted in the ground or held by four people as another strikes it.
Frame drum A frame drum maker stretches cow, elk, horse, or deer hide tightly over a frame, sews it together, and adds a carrying handle to the frame. These drums are usually about four inches deep and as much as 30 inches in diameter. Some two-head and single-head drums are made from sections of hollowed-out logs (called log drums).
Water drum The Native American water drum sounds different from any other kind of drum. It is made in several ways, including using an iron kettle as the body. It is partially filled with water, and tanned buckskin is stretched over it. The drums are played with a thin drumstick that has a loop on the end. Some groups have also made water drums from hollow logs.

However, we had one that would not hold the seal and water level at all, making it impossible to keep the set tuned. The other problem that my girls ages 7 and 4 had with them was keeping them from spilling after they had the proper water level in them. It took A LOT of parent help to make it work without frustration and it was way to complex for my 4 yr old. Water Flutes Tub Tunes Rating: 3 Tub Tunes ring flat The flutes do achieve the goal of teaching about notes and effect of the water in the tubes. They DO NOT easily stay in the blue foam holder. There are only 5 'songs' and they only have a portion of each song. This is the biggest disappointment. Nor are there other song cards that can be purchased.

Harrington Neolithic flutes carved from the hollow wing bones of red-crowned cranes (Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology of Henan Province) [LARGER IMAGE] Chinese scholars have recovered six bone flutes dating from 8,000 to 9,000 years ago, the world's oldest complete, playable, multinote musical instruments. Researchers from the Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology of Henan Province in Zhengzhou found the flutes, crafted from the hollow ulnae (wing bones) of red-crowned crane, among fragments of 30 others at the Neolithic (ca. 8000-2000 B.C.) site of Jiahu in central Henan Province. The best preserved of the flutes, which are up to eight inches long and have between five and eight holes, has been played and analyzed; its tonal scale is remarkably similar to the Western eight-note, do-re-mi scale. "Here you have hard and fast evidence that the Chinese were not just making [one-note] whistles 8,000 years ago, but were capable of making instruments that produced a series of sounds," says Jenny So, curator of ancient Chinese art at the Freer-Sackler Galleries in Washington, which will present an exhibition "Music in the Age of Confucius," between April 28 and September 17, 2000. Chinese researchers obtained 20 radiocarbon dates from charcoal, plant ash, and human bone found in association with the flutes. Garman Harbottle, a chemist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory who helped analyze results of the dating, says he is encouraging Chinese researchers to date the flutes directly using some of the fragments.

In our work we try to preserve the original, often 'raw' sounds of those instruments and at the same time we use modern knowledge to improve their design, measure and finishing. Most of our instruments are made from resonant types of wood which have been impregnated with natural substances so that there is no risk that they may be damaged through exposure to moisture. The electronic tuning and wide selection of ranges and keys of those instruments means that they can be used by professional musicians.
Nowadays a trend can be observed to combine ethnic, classical and modern instruments by which the world of music is becoming richer and more diversified. We hope that our instruments will enable you to explore new possibilities in the area of musical expression.

Medieval Woodwind Instruments
As with recorders, there are virtually no surviving woodwind instruments from prior to the sixteenth century; modern makers have been most ingenious in creating medieval instruments by extrapolating backwards from later renaissance instruments, incorporating European and folk instrument influences, and using depictions of instruments in paintings and wood and stone carvings as a point of departure. John Hanchet has created a set of five medieval shawms which are smaller and quieter in tone than the later, large bore instruments of the renaissance. They are also narrower in bore and a good deal easier to play than the later shawms. They are an excellent choice for the beginning reed player. We offer a variety of medieval woodwind instruments made by James Furner: gemshorns made from African oxhorn in five sizes, bone flutes, and horn cornetts. Whether windcap instruments per se Back to Top of Page
Renaissance Woodwind Instruments
In the sixteenth century, instrument makers developed large families of wind instruments from the sparser medieval instrumentarium; most instruments were made in four to eight different sizes and pitches. The taste of the period dictated the performance of music on contrasting choirs of like instruments, as well as in the mixed ensembles more common in the middle ages and in later periods. The palette of wind instrument colors was far more extensive in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries than at any other time in music history. Transverse flutes, of straight cylindrical bore with six open tone holes, were commonly used in alto, tenor, and bass sizes, although most modern makers provide a soprano size as well. Their simple, open sound contrasts well with renaissance recorder tone as well as with the many reed instruments.

The instruments of celtic music
Fiddle
The fiddle is the mainstay of most Scottish and Irish music. The instrument is exactly the same as a violin; fiddle is simply the term used in traditional music. Despite it's popularity, there's not much information on the net about fiddles or fiddling.
Flute
Flutes of one sort or another have been played in the celtic countries for over a thousand years. The kind in use today is mainly the 'simple-system' flute with six holes and up to eight keys. This became popular in Ireland during the nineteenth century, when classical musicians were abandoning them for the new Boehm-system flute. Modern traditional flutes are usually copies of these early instruments, and almost always made of wood. Their cylindrical bore and wooden construction give a hollow, airy tone, softer than the classical flutes and much smoother than the tin whistle.

Bagpipe (gaita gallega), Spain, ca. 1930
Roughly speaking, wind instruments can be divided into two groups: woodwind and brass instruments. Woodwind instruments are the flutes, including, given their historical development, the transverse flutes now made of silver, as well as oboes, clarinets, bassoons, the saxophone and bagpipes. The common feature of the woodwind instruments is that they use a stream of air produced by blowing as the primary source of sound. This stream of air stimulates the column of air inside the instrument, producing natural vibrations. The pitch is altered by changing the length of the air column, using valves operated by keys in the case of the transverse flute or fingerholes on fipple flutes.
From the transverse flute to the piccolo The most important of the flutes is the transverse flute.
Transverse flutes from the exhibition diplay case
Originally coming from the Orient, it has been known in Europe since the Middles Ages, although only a few instruments still survive from before 1700. In the 18th century, instruments of this kind produced numerous virtuoso players of the highest calibre as well as an immense body of diverse literature. Around 1800, the transverse flute was found to be weak in its tone and its uneven-sounding scale of notes, previously held up as an asset, was perceived as defective. Instruments makers tried to deal with this by adding additional keys. But the decisive improvement did not come until the invention of the circular bore by the Munich flute virtuoso Theobald Böhm, represented in the Deutsches Museum exhibition by three flutes. Alongside the standard transverse flute, the only others to have survived have been the somewhat smaller treble flute which plays about a third higher and lasted until the beginning of the 19th century and the piccolo, playing an octave higher and still with us today.
