This article is about the musical instrument. For the sailing ship, see Fluyt . For the drinkware, see Champagne flute The flute is a musical instrument of the woodwind family. Unlike other woodwind instruments, a flute produces its sound from the flow of air against an edge, instead of using a reed . A musician who plays the flute is generally called a flautist, or flutist Flute sounds are typically closed and hollow as a result of relatively weak upper partials. As a result, flute tones are sweet in character and blend well with other instruments. The flute's timbre, pitch and attack are flexible, allowing a very high degree of instantaneous expressive control.

Weemaels baroque flutes
Belgian maker Alain Weemaels has an excellent reputation worldwide for fine quality hand made flutes. He makes several copies of baroque originals, all to a high standard of craftsmanship.
Student model after A Grenser in boxwood at either a=440, with elliptical mouth hole, or 415 with round mouth hole. These instruments have a silver key, simple foot and represent good value for money for all levels of player.
Folkers and Powell Baroque Flutes
The partnership of Catherine Folkers and Ardal Powell produce a vast range of historical flutes in a variety of pitches and woods. All the instruments are modelled on prime examples of the best European flute makers from 1700-1815. The quality of the Folkers and Powell flutes reflect the fact that their makers are both researchers and performers of historical flutes.
von Huene baroque flutes
Friedrich von Huene has studied in detail the world's finest historic baroque flutes many of which are in private collections and he offers excellent copies of flutes by Rippert, Hotteterre, Naust, Chevalier, Denner, Scherer, Eichentopf, Quantz, Bressan, Stanesby, Rottenburgh, Grenser, Kirst and Tromlitz. Woodland Indian music has been an integral part of the daily lives of Woodland Indians. Songs accompanied ceremonies for the dead, preparations for war, nearly all the games, and were essential in treating the sick. For the observance of the Midewiwin rites, the songs were as important as the spiritual leaders themselves because there could be no rituals without the appropriate songs. Many songs were inspired by dreams either during an individual's vision quest or later in his life. Songs could be learned from the dreamer or, in some cases, bought from the owner. Songs were often passed from tribe to tribe, and men returning from journeys were asked what new songs they had learned. The instruments included drums, rattles, and the courting flutes. Whistles were also made from reed, split alder, or bone, but they were not used as musical instruments. Instead, they were used as war signals and were part of war bundles and war bundle ceremonies.
Drums
There were three kinds of drums: the large drum for the Dream Dance, the water drum for the Midewiwin rites, and the tambourine drum (also called a chief's drum) used in the War Dance, moccasin game, and by Native doctors.

While the term "flute" refers to a broad number of instruments which are found in many different cultures, we will be exploring the history of our modern flute. There are many names for this special kind of flute. These names include: cross flute, German flute, transverse flute and flauto traverso. What is important about all of these names is that they define an instrument that is held horizontally while being played. The instrument's earliest probable history dates back to approximately 900 B.C. This instrument, which was found in China, is called a ch'ie. 200 B.C.

Kettledrums, having a single head over a bowl-shaped resonator, are produced in all sizes. Orchestral kettledrums are tuned by means of hand screws or pedals, whereas some non-Western types are tuned with paste or heat applied to the head, or by manipulating the lacing which attaches to the head or heads. Hard and soft beaters offer tonal variety. In India the technique of playing small kettledrums (the baya in the pair called tabla ) with the hands is a subtle art.

The Virtual Flute offers alternate fingerings for awkward passages and trills, microtone fingerings and multiphonics, ranked by pitch or playability.
Data for each note: Acoustic response, Spectra, Sound files and Fingering
We have measured these on several types of flute , for standard fingerings, some non-standard and some multiphonics . The acoustic response tells us how easily the flute responds to every frequency. For explanations, see What is acoustic response and why is it important?
