http://www.pearlflutes.com
Pearl’s handmade craftsmanship has pioneered a tradition of flute making that is totally distinctive. Many flute makers claim to be innovators, but Pearl’s novelty can be proven. Most of the artisans have the distinction of building flutes for their entire career only at Pearl. The apprentice program has been employed for decades, which allows the talents of master builders to be passed on to future generations. We do not only look to the past, but constantly conduct research with Gold, Silver, ergonomic key design, and headjoint study. Start with Pearl’s patented Pinless Mechanism, which has set an industry benchmark for smoothness and reliability. Coupled with Pearl’s One-Piece Core-Bar Construction, there is no more dependable flute mechanism available. Japanese Quality Control has insured that an investment in these instruments will provide a lifetime of musical satisfaction. The goal of handmade creativity united with meticulous assembly is consequently realized. All of the above would be useless without Pearl’s revered commitment to accuracy of pitch, flexible articulation, and a beautiful and projecting sound. One-Piece Core-Bar The One-Piece Core-Bar construction of all Pearl Flutes eliminates many of the wear and tear problems associated with traditionally constructed flutes, specifically in the areas of the high C key and the king post next to the F# key. Pearl has designed one rod that extends from high C through the king post resulting in an extremely reliable mechanism that plays more comfortable, stays in adjustment longer and is easier to service.

Flutes
By: Catherine Schmidt-Jones Summary: The orchestral flute is only one of many closely-related aerophones.
Introduction
A flute is an aerophone that is played by blowing air across a sharp edge in the mouthpiece of the instrument. The flute family is a large family of instruments that includes widely-recognized instruments such as the orchestral flute and piccolo, panpipes, and recorders, as well as unusual instruments such as nose flutes and ocarinas. Although many particular kinds of flutes are not widely known, flutes in general are probably the most common non-percussion instrument found in music traditions around the world. Flutes are usually (but not always) long, thin cylinders that are open at both ends. (Even if the flute appears to be closed at the mouthpiece end, air can usually escape at the blow hole, making the flute effectively an open-open cylindrical tube instrument.) If the player blows into one end of the cylinder, the flute is called end-blown ; if the blow hole is in the side of the instrument, it is side-blown , or transverse . Flutes that are not cylindrical (such as ocarinas) are usually classified as vessel flutes
Flute Mouthpieces
There are many different types of flutes played around the world. Some have keys, some just finger holes, some are a collection of tubes, and some are just whistles. The one thing that classifies an instrument as a flute is the

74. Break In
Unlike metal flutes, instruments of wood and ivory will shrink or expand withuse and with changes in temperature and humidity. One should always have on
http://www.sideblown.com/solum.html
Excerpt from "The Early Flute"
by John Solum
  • Any wooden or ivory flute with an unsealed bore needs to be 'played in' gradually: ten minutes per session (maximum of two per day) for the first two weeks, then one thirty-minute session per day for another two weeks. One may possibly play it in faster without cracking it, but one must also consider the important element of minimizing the distortion of the bore. No wooden instrument should ever be played more than two hours per day, preferably no more than one. Just because an antique instrument has survived without cracking for centuries does not guarantee it against further cracking. If your traverso is not regularly played and has been allowed to dry out, play it in gradually again.
  • Always warm the instrument before playing. A cold instrument will condense your warm breath faster than a warm one. A cold instrument being warmed by playing will also be unstable in pitch while warming. Warm the instrument slowly by holding it in your hands or under your arm. Electrical heating rolls are a recent development which are designed to warm flutes or recorders prior to using them.
  • Keep the threads on the tenons adjusted so that the tenons will fit properly into the sockets. Unlike metal flutes, instruments of wood and ivory will shrink or expand with use and with changes in temperature and humidity. One should always have on hand a spool of thread to cope with these changes. Keep the thread wrappings well lubricated with cork grease or petroleum jelly.

    By Henry Doktorski
The Austrian musicologist, Erich Moritz von Hornbostel (1877-1935), and his German colleague, Curt Sachs (1881-1959), proposed in 1914 a system of classification for musical instruments which has been criticized and changed in details through the years, but never supplanted. The following chart of my own design (which depicts the position of the free-reed instruments in relation to the entire body of musical instruments) is based upon their work.

    78. Japanese Traditional Music [ Musical Instruments/Fue (Flute) ]
There are two basic kinds of flutes, the transverse flute where the instrumentis held to the side and the player blows into the side of the flute.
    http://jtrad.columbia.jp/eng/i_fue.html
There are two basic kinds of flutes, the transverse flute where the instrument is held to the side and the player blows into the side of the flute. The gakubue, komabue, ryuteki, Noh kan and shinobue are all examples of transverse flute. The other kind of flute is held vertically and the player blows into the end. The shakuhachi and hichiriki are examples of this type of flute (although the hichiriku is actually more of a reed instrument than a flute). Kagurabue:
This flute is used in Mikagura, the native Japanese music preserved in Gagaku. It is 45.5 cm. long and is the longest flute used in Japanese music. There are six finger holes. With the exception of the mouth and finger holes, the entire instrument is wrapped in birch or cherry bark and then lacquered. Komabue:
This flute is used in Komagaku, one type of music used for dances of the right in Gagaku imperial court music. The instrument is 36.8 cm. long and there are six finger holes. It is very similar to the kagurabue, but it is much thinner. In the 6th and 7th centuries, there were three kingdoms on the Korean peninsula, Shiragi, Kudara and Kokuri, in the Japanese pronunciation. The imperial court introduced music from these countries and in the Nara period, music performed by the Gagaku agency used the flute in music from Kudara and Kokuri, also known as "Koma." In the Heian period foreign music included music and dance from China preserved as dances of the left and dances of the right composed mainly of entertainments from Kudara and Kokuri. But the present length of the flute was not set until the end of the Heian period and it is thought that this is when the thinner flute was set as the komabue and the thicker flute as the kaburabue.

Handmade from Bamboo Grown in the Japanese Alps
The shakuhachi came to Japan from China in the 12th century AD. Although it has long since disappeared from China, the instrument has rooted itself in over eight centuries of Japanese tradition, today playing a vital role in Japanese culture. A shaku is an old form of Japanese measurement of length. Therefore, shakuhachi is the equivalent of 1.8 shaku or about 55 centimeters, which gives the flute and its five holes the five basic sounds of C, D, F, G, and A, with seven sharps and flats. The basic European scale contains seven basic notes with five sharps and flats. Although the European and Asian scales were developed independently, they are each based on these 12 sounds.
