Did Harvard study downplay risk of fluoride?
University to probe professor's research on water, bone cancer in boys
BOSTON - Harvard University said it is investigating whether a dentistry professor who edits a newsletter funded by a toothpaste maker played down research showing an increased cancer risk from drinking fluoridated tap water. The school will work with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to review Chester Douglass' research into fluoride exposure and osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, Harvard Medical School spokesman John Lacey said. The institute awarded a $1.3 million study grant in 1992 to Douglass, who found that the odds of having osteosarcoma after drinking fluoridated water were "not statistically different" from the odds for those who drank non-fluoridated water. Elise Bassin, a doctoral student supervised by Douglass who studied some of the same people, reported in her 2001 thesis that boys who drink fluoridated water appear to have an increased risk of developing the bone cancer. The Environmental Working Group, an advocacy group based in Washington, D.C., filed an ethics complaint against Douglass last month after discovering that he cited Bassin's research in his final grant report. In it, he said her work supported his claim that there was no significant risk from fluoridated water, even though Bassin had found a strong link between fluoride levels in tap water and an increased osteosarcoma risk for boys.

They stated that 90% of the Arsenic contamination found in drinking water is attributable to fluorosilicic acid used in artificial fluoridation schemes. The EPA is lobbying Congress and the Senate to reduce Arsenic levels to three to five parts per billion. Many studies have concluded that chronic health effects due to low concentrations of Arsenic in the drinking water include prostate, skin, bladder, kidney, liver and lung cancers. The non-cancerous effects include skin pigmentation and keratosis (callous-like skin growths), gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, hormonal (e.g., diabetes ), haematological, (e.g., anaemia), pulmonary, neurological and immunological effects and damage to reproductive/developmental functions.

Fluoride Exposure During Pregnancy Links to Learning Disabilities
Attention Deficit and Behavior Disorders SOURCE: Neurotoxicology and Teratology, 17(2), 1995 INTRODUCTION First Study to Find Neurological Deficits After Fluoride Exposure Chinese investigations have shown levels of fluoride in drinking water at levels of 3-11 ppm affect the nervous system without first causing physical malformations. Another Chinese study found Attention Deficit Disorders in adult humans if sublingual drops containing 100 ppm of sodium fluoride were administered. Sources of fluoride exposure include processed beverages, toothpastes, mouth rinses, dietary supplements and food. This is an exposure level potentially relevant to humans because toothpastes contain 1000 to 1500 ppm fluoride and mouthrinses contain 230-900 ppm fluoride. In the 1995 article appearing in the journal Neurotoxicology and Teratology, Dr. Phyllis J Mullenix states, " Still unexplored, however, is the possibility that fluoride exposure is linked with subtle brain dysfunction. This is the first study to demonstrate that central nervous system output is vulnerable to fluoride, that the effects on behavior depend on the age at exposure and that fluoride accumulates in brain tissues. Of course behaviors per se do not extrapolate, but a generic behavioral pattern disruption as found in this rat study can be indicative of potential for motor dysfunction, IQ deficits and/or learning disabilities in humans. Substances that accumulate in brain tissue potentiate concerns about neurotoxic risk."

DESCRIPTION
In the 1930s, it was discovered that high fluoride intake was responsible for a dental condition which is characterized by mottled enamel and which is known as dental fluorosis. Observational studies at the time led to the conclusion that those who lived in areas with a high incidence of dental fluorosis also had a lower incidence of caries than those who lived in areas where the fluoride intake was low. In 1945, water fluoridation began in Grand Rapids, Michigan as a public health measure to reduce the incidence of caries. Presently, approximately 60% of community water supplies in the United States contain fluoride from 0.7 to 1.2 parts per million or 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams per liter. Fluoride is the anionic form of fluorine. Fluorine is a halogen gas with atomic number 9 and an atomic weight of 19 daltons. Its symbol is F. Fluorine is the most electronegative element in the periodic table and, in size, it is very similar to the first element, hydrogen. Even though fluoride has a beneficial role in the protection against caries, there is no evidence that fluoride is an essential nutrient for humans. The only evidence that it may be essential for higher animals is a recent report that fluoride deficiency in goats decreased life expectancy and caused pathological findings in the kidneys and endocrine organs. Fluoride, in addition to being found in municipal drinking water, is found in many foods. Particularly rich sources of fluoride are teas and marine fish.

The following documents why our union, formerly National Federation of Federal Employees Local 2050 and since April 1998 Chapter 280 of the National Treasury Employees Union, took the stand it did opposing fluoridation of drinking water supplies. Our union is comprised of and represents the approximately 1500 scientists, lawyers, engineers and other professional employees at EPA Headquarters here in Washington, D.C. The union first became interested in this issue rather by accident. Like most Americans, including many physicians and dentists, most of our members had thought that fluoride's only effects were beneficial - reductions in tooth decay, etc. We too believed assurances of safety and effectiveness of water fluoridation. Then, as EPA was engaged in revising its drinking water standard for fluoride in 1985, an employee came to the union with a complaint: he said he was being forced to write into the regulation a statement to the effect that EPA thought it was alright for children to have "funky" teeth. It was OK, EPA said, because it considered that condition to be only a

Respected Medical Professionals and Scientists are warning that water fluoridation has dangerous long-term consequences to health. For over 50 years, the U.S. government and media have trumpeted fluoride as a safe and effective means of reducing cavities, especially in children. But fluoride is not the benevolent and innocuous substance the public has been led to believe. "I am appalled at the prospect of using water as a vehicle for drugs. Fluoride is a corrosive poison that will produce serious effects on a long range basis. Any attempt to use water this way is deplorable." diagnosis and treatment by a qualified, licensed professional. There's nothing like a glass of cool, clear water to quench one's thirst. But the next time you or your child reaches for one, you might want to question whether that water is in fact, too toxic to drink. If your water is fluoridated, the answer may well be yes. For decades, we have been told a lie, a lie that has led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans and the weakening of the immune systems of tens of millions more. This lie is called fluoridation. A process we were led to believe was a safe and effective method of protecting teeth from decay is in fact a fraud. In recent years it's been shown that fluoridation is neither essential for good health nor protective of teeth. What it does is poison the body. We should all at this point be asking how and why public health policy and the American media continue to live with and perpetuate this scientific sham.

A common obstacle one runs into when trying to inform others of the dangers of a product is being told you are not an "expert". This can, however, be used to one's advantage if one happens to find an "expert" who verifies your own views on the benefits of natural versus chemical approaches to health. My background is that of a Chemical Engineer, having earned my B.A.Sc. from the University of British Columbia in 1984. When it comes to chemistry I can say that I am an "expert" in this area due to studying it full time for over 10 years.

Fluoride-cancer study scrutinized Harvard professor might have concealed findings JULIET EILPERIN; The Washington Post
Published: July 13th, 2005 12:01 AM Federal authorities and Harvard University officials are investigating whether a Harvard professor buried research suggesting a link between fluoridated tap water and bone cancer in adolescent boys. Douglass, who serves as editor in chief for the industry-funded Colgate Oral Care Report, supervised research for a 2001 doctoral thesis that concluded boys exposed to fluoridated water at a young age were more likely to get the cancer. The Environmental Working Group, an advocacy organization, urged federal officials late last month to explore whether Douglass had skewed his 2004 report to the institute to play down possible risks associated with fluoridation. Issue divides pierce county The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have ranked fluoridation as one of the top 10 health achievements of the 20th century.

FLUORIDE FANTASIES "...ll surveys both here and in Western Europe show that the reduction in (dental) caries over the past 20 years is just as great in unfluoridated as in fluoridated communities." John R. Lee, MD. Even "...the Journal of the American Dental Association (states) that 'the current reported decline in caries in the US and other Western industrialised countries has been observed in both fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities, with percentage reductions in each community apparently the same." A computer analysis of the data from the largest dental survey ever done - of nearly 40,000 school children - by the National Institutes of Dental Research revealed no correlation between tooth decay and fluoridation. In fact, many of the non-fluoridated cities had better tooth decay rates than fluoridated cities. The city with the lowest rate of tooth decay was not fluoridated. Of the three with the highest rate of decay, two were partially fluoridated. The Missouri State Bureau of Dental Health "had conducted a survey of more than 6,500 lifelong resident second- and sixth-grade children in various parts of Missouri and found that overall.. 'there were no significant differences between children drinking optimally fluoridated water and children drinking suboptimally fluoridated water." Albert W. The federal government’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Dental Association (ADA) are holding a symposium in Chicago this week titled: "National Fluoridation Symposium 2005: Celebrating 60 Years of Water Fluoridation" (July 13–16). The CDC ranks fluoridation of community drinking water as one of the ten most significant public health achievements of the 20 th century. No speaker at this symposium will dare question the safety or efficacy of fluoride. That is now a given and has become dogma. But like in 1968 when protests against the Vietnam War were held in the Windy City outside the Democratic National Convention, this week protesters have assembled in Chicago to fight fluoridation. Doctors and public health officials did not think sodium fluoride, used commercially as a rat and bug poison, fungicide, and wood preservative, should be put in public water. The

FLUORIDE MIKE MCCOY A vocal minority aside, most people approve of the addition of fluoride to their toothpaste and drinking water to help prevent tooth decay. For better or worse, fluoride is ubiquitous, yet many people don't know what that stuff is. A When he arrived, McKay was astounded to find scores of townspeople with brown stains on their teeth. At the same time, he later learned, the mottled teeth were surprisingly resistant to decay. McKay's quest to determine the cause of the staining ended three decades later with the discovery that the town's drinking water had high levels of naturally occurring fluoride. Subsequent research determined that water fluoride levels below 1 ppm prevent decay without the attendant staining. In a trial launched in 1945, Grand Rapids, Mich., became the first city to fluoridate its water; 11 years later, the benefits of the practice were clear and widespread fluoridation began.

Fluoride is considered a trace element because only small amounts are present in the body (about 2.6 grams in adults), and because the daily requirement for maintaining dental health is only a few milligrams a day. About 95% of the total body fluoride is found in bones and teeth . Although its role in the prevention of dental caries (tooth decay) is well established, fluoride is not generally considered an essential mineral element because humans do not require it for growth or to sustain life . However, if one considers the prevention of chronic disease (dental caries), an important criterion in determining essentiality, then fluoride might well be considered an essential trace element FUNCTION Fluoride is absorbed in the stomach and small intestine . Once in the blood stream it rapidly enters mineralized tissue (bones and developing teeth). At usual intake levels, fluoride does not accumulate in soft tissue. The predominant mineral elements in bone are crystals of calcium and phosphate, known as hydroxyapatite crystals. Fluoride's high chemical reactivity and small radius allow it to either displace the larger hydroxyl (-OH) ion in the hydroxyapatite crystal, forming fluoroapatite, or to increase crystal density by entering spaces within the hydroxyapatite crystal. Fluoroapatite hardens tooth

Most water filters will not effectively remove fluoride. Arguably, the only filters that will reliably remove 80-90 percent of fluoride are those that use reverse-osmosis technology (depending on the quality of the filter).
Use bottled water with known low fluoride content.
Whenever possible, switch from fluoridated to nonfluoridated medications, as some steroids, antibiotics and antidepressants (i.e. Prozac and Paxil) can increase fluoride levels in the blood.
Stress to your kids that toothpaste should not be swallowed and help them with brushing, ensuring they only brush with a pea-size amount of toothpaste.

Hardest on the Kids Fluoride toxicity is also fingered as a cause of thyroid dysfunction, especially that of underactive thyroid, termed hypothyroidism, a widespread medical condition that can cause fatigue, weight gain, cramps and a slow heart rate. In the mid-1900s minute doses of fluoride were used to correct overactive thyroid function. This has not escaped the observation of Hirzy, the chemist, who says the amount of fluoride most of us are exposed to in drinking water, processed foods and dental products is far beyond doses used to suppress an overactive thyroid. He theorizes that currently accepted fluoridation levels in water systems could slow thyroid functioning, leading to hypothyroidism.

Fluoride Dental decay is a common disease in North America. One way to help prevent this disease from occurring is through the use of fluoride. Fluoride helps harden the tooth enamel and make it more resistant to tooth decay. A small cavity can be stopped and even reversed by the remineralization process enhanced by fluoride. Fluoride can be delivered to the teeth in 2 ways; topically (direct contact on the teeth) and systemically (enters the blood stream).
Systemic Fluoride Systemic fluoride is delivered to the tooth surface via the bloodstream. Systemic fluoride can be derived from a food source, water source, or dietary supplements ( pill, tablet, lozenge, drop ). Fluoridated water is an effective way to reduce the problem of dental decay. It has been shown that fluoridated water and dietary supplements can reduce up to 60 % of tooth decay. Some water supplies already naturally contain fluoride, for others, fluoride is intentionally added to the water supply. Some communities have no fluoride in their water. Other communities are unaware of this option. If you would like to know if your community's water supply contains fluoride, call your local water or health department.

FLUORIDE The trace element fluorine is present in the body almost entirely in bone and teeth. Because of its high reactivity, fluorine exists as its anion fluoride. Fluoride's best known effect is to serve as a catalyst for both the mineralization of developing tooth enamel prior to tooth eruption and for remineralization of surface enamel. The combination of these fluoride effects greatly reduces occurrence of dental decay (caries). Denotal caries is an infectious disease caused by bacteria. When food is ingested, oral bacteria multiply within their home (plaque) and produce organic acids. Loss of tooth enamel accelerates as long as plaque pH is less than 5.5. The presence of fluoride changes some of the tooth crystal into a less acid-soluble crystal known as fluoropatite. Diet recommendations : The Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences has concluded that a fluoride intake of 0.05 mg/kg body weight, after the age of 6 months, provides an adequate fluoride intake to reduce risk of dental decay. It is assumed that this fluoride will come from a combination of food and water sources. Food sources : The major source of fluoride is drinking water. Seafood, some teas, and foods made with mechanically separated chicken (baby food, canned meats, luncheon meats, and frankfurters) contribute to total fluoride intake. Otherwise, most foods are very low in fluoride.

Abstract: The American Academy of Pediatrics endorses and accepts as its policy the Recommendations for Using Fluoride to Prevent and Control Dental Caries in the United States The recommendations in this report guide dental and other health-care providers, public health officials, policy makers, and the public in the use of fluoride to achieve maximum protection against dental caries while using resources efficiently and reducing the likelihood of enamel fluorosis. The recommendations address public health and professional practice, self-care, consumer product industries and health agencies, and further research. Adoption of these recommendations could further reduce dental caries in the United States and save public and private resources.
