THE MUSEUM VIRTUAL TOUR of MUSEUM PEOPLE WORKS ORCHARD SIDE GARDENS MISCELLANEOUS The Cowper and Newton Museum The Gardens There are two gardens at Orchard Side: closest to the house is the Flower Garden; the Summer House Garden lies beyond it on the other side of a wall. A gate links the two gardens. The Flower Garden and its restoration Gardening was of all my employments that in which I succeeded best; though even in this I did not suddenly achieve perfection. I began with lettuces and cauliflowers, next to melons. Then I purchased an orange tree, to which, in due time, I added two or three myrtles. William Cowper was a keen gardener and there are many nature observations and references to gardening in his poetry and letters. Indeed, his garden was a constant source of solace and encouragement to him, especially during his bouts of depression, and for nineteen years he grew a wide variety of plants at

Home Lifestyle Gardening The Floral Garden ... Readers Tips
Butterfly House in the Flower Garden By Sandra Wilson Whenever you decide to look for a butterfly house for your flower garden, you first have to determine what it is you actually want. A search for butterfly houses will yield two different types. There is the type of butterfly house that contains butterflies and their nectar plants. These type of butterfly houses are actually structures created for the specific reason of providing a safe and enclosed space in which to study the butterflies. It can vary from a playpen-size for individual study to a medium-sized net-drapped area to large green house-like structure for scientists' study. We even have large enclosures open for public viewing, education and delight. If you find this a delightful prospect to walk in a large "cage" with hundreds of butterflies surrounding you, consult your local museums and zoos for information. This being the information age, check online too. As part of your children's, or your own, education, you may wish to raise some butterflies from caterpillar in a small butterfly house. Live butterfly kits are readily available and come with all you need to raise the caterpillar to a butterfly, usually a Painted Lady. Of course you may be able to collect the eggs from your own garden and raise them in your own home for your education and enjoyment. Please find a proper resource to guide you in this prospect if you should choose to do so.

http://www.osv.org/kids/crafts6.htm
Sow what? Plant a vegetable or flower garden!
("Old Sturbridge Village Kids", Spring 1998) The following hints and suggestions come from the Village's horticultural staff and such resources as Joseph Breck's The Young Florist (Boston, 1833) and The American Farm Book (of 1849). If you're more interested in planting flowers than vegetables, the Museum Gift Shop offers a Children's Garden Kit, which includes a selection of flower seeds and suggestions for creating a garden like the one at the Fitch House at Old Sturbridge Village. Whether you want to plant modem radishes or antique rutabagas, here are some suggestions for getting started:
Make Numbering Sticks Using leftover wooden shingles (a local lumberyard might have some if there are none around your house), split (or saw) them into strips about one inch wide (do this carefully with the help of an adult). Sharpen the thin ends, paint the smooth sides white, and let them dry. Use a black pencil or marking pen to write a number on the white side of each stick near the top. Each number refers to a different flower or plant in your garden and matches the number you put on each seed packet.
Make a Garden Rule From a piece of wood about 8- 10 feet long, saw a thin strip about one-inch wide (maybe the lumber store will cut this for you). Turn the strip into a giant ruler by marking off 1 -foot increments with a black pencil or marker. This will help you keep your rows straight and your garden plot square. Mark the first foot off in inches as well (this will help you with spacing your rows and seedlings).

Imagine a vase overflowing with flower blossoms sitting on your dining or kitchen table. Picture the flowers being replaced each week with new, fresh, and different blooms. It's not a dream, it's a reality—and it doesn't have to cost much money when you have your own cut-flower garden. All summer, you can pluck beautiful flowers from your outside garden to bring indoors. Plus, you'll always have beautiful bouquets on hand to give to family and friends.
Laying the Land
Cut-flower gardens serve the sole purpose of growing flowers for bouquets. Start the gardening process by choosing a spot that gets full sun, has well-drained soil, and, if possible, faces southward. Since cut-flower gardens produce plants used primarily for cutting bouquets, you don't have to worry about following a particular structure or format—feel free to plant as you please.
However, if you want a more structured look to your garden and are planting against a wall or fence, try putting tall flowers (e.g., sunflowers, hollyhocks) in the rear of the garden, medium-sized flowers (e.g., snapdragons, dahlias) in the middle, and finish with the low-growing plants (e.g., alyssum, verbena) in front. If your bed will be viewed from all sides, you can plant tall flowers in the center, but follow the same gradual downward planting succession.
Pick Your Flowers
When it comes to planting flowers, you have lots of options. You can have fun creating indoor arrangements by planting an assortment of flowers in different colors, heights, and/or textures. And remember when planting that some types of flowers are a cut above others: They look great in bouquets, last longer in vases, and are perfect candidates for cut-flower gardens. Some cut-flower favorites are:

The garden can incorporate both natural and man-made materials. The most common form is known as a residential garden . Western gardens are almost universally based around plants. Zoos , which display wild animals in simulated natural habitats, were formerly called zo¶logical gardens . Some traditional types of eastern gardens, such as Zen gardens, use plants sparsely or not at all. Food-producing gardens are distinguished from farms by their smaller scale, more labor-intensive methods, and their purpose (enjoyment of a hobby rather than produce for sale); this distinction is not always clear-cut, however. The gardening article discusses the differences and similarities between gardens and farms in greater detail. Gardening is the activity of growing and maintaining the garden. Growing and Sharing Cut Flowers
In The South By Neil G. Odenwald and William C. Welch
Reviewed by Cynthia W. Mueller, Master Gardener, Galveston County

Growing and sharing flowers and ornamental plants is a Southern tradition - as satisfying now as it was in the beginning days of Southern history when commercial sources were scarce and friends and neighbors provided one another with treasured "starts" of garden favorites to use in decorating home, church, weddings and other festive occasions. In The Bountiful Flower Garden readers will learn some of the practical possibilities between annuals (plants that complete their lifecycle in a year or less) and perennials (those with a longer lifespan) and shrubs, trees, and vines useful for decoration. More than 300 full-color illustrations as well as plant hardiness zone maps, descriptions of available varieties, and suggestions for color combinations and cultivation requirements help the gardener to visualize successful, personalized plants. Material is included on recognizing, growing, cutting and treating foliage for arrangements - broken into categories such as garden plants, ferns, ornamental grasses, palms and others. Also covered are major Southern fruiting plants of distinction such as ardisia (Christmas berry), callicarpa (French mulberry), bittersweet, Carolina snailseed, hawthorns, Japanese persimmon, deciduous hollies, golden rain tree, flowering carbapples, nandina, pyracantha and viburnums.
