Flowers, trees and shrubs take up most of the room and often take the most looking after. Easy solutions to managing the flower garden are at hand:
  • Avoid plants that are difficult to grow.
  • Choose plants that grow well in the conditions that you have. There is no point in trying to grow alpines in very wet, clay soil!
  • Select plant material which does not require regular or on-going maintenance.
  • Use ground cover plants to spread over bare ground to cut down on weeding.
  • Reduce the width of borders so that you do not have to stand on them.
  • Over the years, remove the plants that are difficult to maintain.
  • Ensure plant material does not grow over the footpath - it can be tripped on.
  • Raising the ground level of the bed might help with access to the soil level.
  • Mulches of bark, plastic, or gravel etc. will suppress weed growth and conserve moisture in the soil.

Tackling the site

... Plant suggestions
The prospect of gardening on a steeply sloping site is often looked on with fear and trembling but, with imaginative use, changes in level can greatly enhance the beauty and interest of a garden. Many older or disabled people are daunted by the prospect of coping with what seems like a mountainside outside their back door. Here we consider what is necessary to enhance and improve a sloping site. Deciding what is possible Before any other considerations, it is important to decide what is really wanted from the garden. For instance, do you simply want low maintenance cover for their awkward slope or to use the garden in a more intensive way? Your priorities could be:
  • that the garden be accessible from a wheelchair
  • that there is a system of low gradient paths through the garden
  • a flat area for a small glasshouse
  • shelter and screening from neighbours
  • cordon and espalier fruit trees
  • space for potting up and sowing seeds
  • areas for outdoor relaxation
  • space for an accessible washing line
Further considerations might include the needs of others who use the garden, such as the provision of a flat play area for children. Once these priorities are established, they can help to shape the design - within the limitations of your site and budget.

Photographs are a necessity for a gardening web site such as mine. Although I purchased a digital camera because of the ease of using the photos in my web pages, I quickly realized how easy and inexpensive it was to take LOTS of pictures. This being the case, plus my love of hiking in the Northwest has resulted in my accruing in excess of 11,000 photos in my personal library. These photographs are used on my gardening web pages as well as being displayed in the two photo galleries at The Garden Helper. They are also the backbone of my free screensaver collection. The majority of the photos are of flowers, plants and trees. You will also find a wide array of 'nature' images as well. These pics range anywhere from a single stone to mountains and waterfalls... to critters and creatures, big and small You may download any of these images for your personal use, free of charge. Fall Gardening Plant mums, asters and pansies to give your garden a burst of color and beauty this fall. Pansies will bloom all fall into winter and then bloom again with your bulbs early the next spring. Mums and asters are perennials that come back year after year to flower in the fall. We can all plant traditional chrysanthemums sometimes called mums. But there are some alternatives you may want to consider, like ornamental peppers. The show comes from brightly colored fruit that cover the top of the plant. If you get tired of looking at them, you can harvest the peppers and add them to a favorite recipe. Some other treats for the eye and appetite are the ornamental cabbages and kales. And if you live in the mild part of the country, pansies will bloom all winter long. For the shade garden, you might try the Japanese anemone. And for full sun, it's hard to beat New England asters and ornamental grasses. All of these will be sure to come back in your garden next year. Now, don't forget that fall is one of the best times of the year to get shrubs and trees in the ground, even though we traditionally do most of our plant shopping in the early spring. You wouldn't want to miss out on a beautiful foliage display like on a Japanese maple or the beautiful fruit set on pyracantha. Pansies are a biennial and when planted in the fall will often bloom again early the next spring. They can also be grown as an annual. There are several varieties with brightly colored flowers.

Home The Flower Gardens
The Oval Flower Beds at Monticello
There are two elements to the Monticello flower garden: the twenty oval beds immediately around the house and the winding walk flower border that defines the West Lawn. Although there were earlier references to the flower "borders," it was not until 1807, when Jefferson began to anticipate his retirement from the presidency, that the flower gardens began to assume their ultimate shape. He then sketched a plan for the twenty oval-shaped flower beds in the four corners or "angles" of the house. Each bed was planted with a different flower, and most of the seeds and bulbs had been forwarded by Bernard McMahon, a Philadelphia nurseryman, author of The American Gardener's Calendar , and in many ways, Jefferson's gardening mentor.
Although there were later notations concerning plantings in the oval beds in Jefferson's Garden Book, a remarkable diary detailing a lifetime of horticulture at Monticello, the 1807 plan was the most complete. The diversity of flower species represents the scope of his interests. Many of the flowers had been grown for centuries in Europe and were commonly cultivated in early American gardens, such as roses, the Sweet William, and the double white-flowering poppy. Others were curiosities, such as the winter cherry with its lantern-like fruits and the blackberry lily.

Home Gardening: Flowers
Current Situation
Annuals and perennials spice the landscape with their colorful flowers and foliage. Beds of color provide brilliant accents against backgrounds of permanent plantings, soften man-made lines, and provide graceful transitions from one outdoor area to another. Flowers can be used to catch the eye, accent a view, frame a door, or just draw attention to their own blooms. This section of Home Gardening is divided into two areas:
  • Annual plants
Annual plants are practical in that they are versatile, sturdy, and inexpensive. They quickly yield color for a long season. Perennial plants
Perennial plants return year after year. They fit into many landscapes and can be used in borders, as accents, or as strong focal points. The foliage of many perennials is attractive during nonflowering seasons as well.
