Wild flower garden
or are they just weeds?
Wild flower gardens are increasing in popularity as gardeners in general are more in tune with nature. Charlie Dimmock and Alan Titchmarsh with television programmes such as Charlie's Wildlife Gardens, Ground Force, Gardeners' World and Charlie's Garden Army actively encourage gardeners to attract wildlife to their gardens and to grow wild flowers. As the countryside changes and diminishes many of us like to create a miniature countryside in our own gardens. Click on the photographs to enlarge honeysuckle foxglove red campion celandine Many wild flowers have decided to make a home in my garden and I leave some of them, uproot some and encourage others. Wild flowers that have just 'appeared' in my garden that I consider worthy of a place include honeysuckle, foxglove, red campion, lesser celandine, herb robert and forget me not. I have bought others, including primrose and lady's smock. Lady's smock can attract caterpillars of green veined white and orange tip butterflies. herb robert forget me not

Exceptionally warm and summer-like spring weather this year has pushed many different garden plants into early growth and budding. In my garden this week, the yellow tree peony (Peonia lutea) bloomed, along with lilacs, a combination that seldom happens. (The lilacs usually complete their bloom before the peony opens.) One of the many delights of gardening happens when we observe new scenes unfolding in the familiar landscape. Mine this year is silky yellow peony petals with fragrant purple lilacs. Now's the time to map the potential locations for next year's hardy spring bulbs and look at garden displays of narcissus, tulips, and hyacinths. The later, large tulips (often seen in May) are in bloom in many gardens this week. Tall tulip 'White Triumphator' reached nearly 30 inches this year in the lower garden. Write down the bulbs you like with some potential sites for them; walk in gardens and look at spring now. You'll find that fall bulb catalogs for ordering arrive now, or come in early summer. Planning the spring garden makes sense now while you can see what's happening. If you wait until August to consider this gardening dimension, you'll have forgotten which flowers thrilled you now. In tulips I've appreciated the deep orange/purple feathered 'Princess Irene' and the sparkling white/yellow 'Sweetheart.'

Play~Pause~Stop The flower beds of Don and Pat Swink
Thomasville, North Carolina

Any warm day, spring, summer, or fall, you may catch a glimpse of lifelong Thomasville, NC resident, Pat Swink, traipsing through the local garden centers' crowded aisles of brightly colored blooms, her head down, fingers eagerly plucking the informative plastic picks, then replacing them, as she searches for the perfect plant for the perfect spot in her home flower beds. Red Europeana Climbing Rose
How it all started Now a grandmother, Pat remembers back to her childhood at this same address and similar climbing roses to the one pictured above. She and her twin sister, Pam, enjoyed picking at and sniffing the red buds, and their mama made many photos in front of the favored vines. In addition to roses , there were also chrysanthemums during fall, black-eyed Susans and rooster combs during summer, and during spring the shocking pink and the dazzling white azalea bushes that bloomed in unison with the white flowering dogwoods. White candytuft bloomed under and around the feet of the azaleas, making springtime a particularly beautiful time to be outside in the yard. The Grancy graybeard trees Pat's mom, Leora Deese, planted still stand, as do the evergreen redtips that lend a red and green background at the back width of the lot. Leora had also started a pink crepe myrtle that now spawns oodles of offshoots, those blushing babies lining a fence along the left side of the backyard and the left side of the concrete driveway out front. Evergreen pine trees Pat's dad, Mickey Deese, planted as 4 inch bareroot seedlings now tower at 40 feet in the air.

Walking around the garden this week, I've noticed that the perennial and annual flowers need some mid-summer tweaking and boosting. The mature perennials and annuals set seeds and produce some brown leaves. Sneaky weeds move into the centers of plants. Three-foot daisies topple over on the asters. Now that the weather has cooled a bit, working in the flower garden offers distinct pleasure on a long evening. In my garden, I'll start by getting the stakes and twine for plants I didn't tie up earlier. My garden has a patch of clumping bamboo that's more valuable as a source of good, unobtrusive plant stakes than it is as a visual treat. With a handful of stakes and some green twine, I'll untangle and tie up some of the wobbly plants. Gooseneck loosestrife, a graceful late-bloomer with curved white flowers, frequently falls flat as it grows. (This plant, Lysimachia clethroides , isn't related to the troublesome purple loosestrife that's classified as a noxious weed in Washington state. That one is

http://www.seedandsower.com/
Home Cut Flowers Seeds Seed Collecting ... Alberta Links Gardening is a creative challenge and allows one to experience the beauty of nature in a very practical hands-on way! Much enjoyment and a real sense of accomplishment can be obtained from growing your own perennials and annuals from seed. I believe you will develop a deeper appreciation for your garden and your individual plants, as you watch the transformation from seed to mature specimens. You can enjoy a greater variety of perennials and annuals, when you cultivate your own seeds rather than purchasing plants from your local nursery. The difference in money spent can also be quite significant. I have a page of links, sites which I have found quite beneficial in learning more about growing from seed, and in the ongoing cultivation of different plants. I live in Southern Ontario and over the last six years or so have developed an avid interest in gardening. Our zone is listed as zone 5 with distinct four seasons of growing which range from freezing temperatures to tropical. This is a picture of our back yard in the late spring of 2004. I marvel at the beauty of the flowers and the distinctive foliage of the great variety of plants you can grow from seed. This gratitude has overflowed into a new hobby of amateur photography. My husband and I acquired a new digital camera this past June. We are astounded at the pictures we have captured in our own garden. The camera we purchased is a Nikon Coolpix 5200. The pictures on this website were mostly taken with this camera. We have been so delighted with the quality of pictures taken that we would like to offer some photos for you to download. They are available on the download page for your convenience.

Sandy Hill Flower Farm HOME Hummingbird Attracting Plants September 1, 2005 Dear Gardening Friends, It is with mixed emotions that I wish to announce the closing of Sandy Hill Flower Farm. As I look forward to my continued work at Brookgreen Gardens and a more balanced life, I am also sad to end the Sandy Hill Flower Farm connection with the Grand Strand gardening community. It has been a gratifying 16 years of getting to know so many of you and assisting you in creating your gardens. I wish to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your patronage and for allowing me to make a living following my passion for plants and gardening. Starting September 6, we will begin selling off our remaining stock, initially at 25% off regular price. We ask that payment be made for any purchases with cash or check. We will no longer accept credit or debit cards. Although we have not grown many of our traditional crops of fall flowers, we do have, as always, a great final selection of plant material to sell. Judy and Marlene will be available to assist you Tuesday-Saturday, 9am-4pm until we sell out. Please give us a call if you have any questions or concerns about our closing. I have come to the conclusion that people who are passionate about gardening are some of the finest and most interesting people in the world. It has been a privilege and an honor to be a part of your gardening world.
