Flowers
Egyptians show their whole relation to Nature in their love for gardens - not an extravagant Nature, but one who deserves the care and pains of man, because of her great beauty, her protecting shade, her wonderful flowers, and her costly fruits. To dwellers in the Nile valley, Nature was the setting for all that was dear: happy fêtes, poetry, and love. All were bound up with the garden and its products, especially flowers. Few Oriental nations can think of a festival without flowers, but nowhere are they so completely a part of human life, and so essential, as in Egypt. In architecture flowers gave the forms for columns, for the growth of capitals, and all ornaments (Fig, Temple of Edfu). In the house flowers are the chief decoration. The inside of a room often shows nothing but great bunches of flowers in prettily decorated vases, or votive tables decked with flowers. But if a feast is held in a house, or made ready for the gods, everything is clothed in flowers. Garlands are on head and neck, the guest is presented with a nosegay, or at least a single flower, as he enters. The servants are not only busy with preparing the dishes, but are always weaving new wreaths, and with each kind of refreshment new flowers are handed round. The guests carried them in their hands all the time, and also enjoyed their perfume.

Flower Gardening
Flowers have a tremendous impact on a landscape. They can add instant beauty to any location, outline a walkway or highlight a special place in your garden. Flower beds allow you the opportunity to create a new design from year to year. Flowering bedding plants may be either annuals or perennials - an annual grows for only one season while perennials grow for more than one season. A kaleidoscope of color can be created by combining both annuals and perennials in your planting scheme.
Plant Selection
The key to a successful flower garden is your choice of plant material. Make certain that the bedding plants you choose will grow in your region of the country. It is equally important to place them in the proper location in your garden. Choose shade loving plants for shady areas and sun loving plants for areas exposed to full sun.
  • Look for deep green, vigorous plants that are not spindly.

Introduction
This section of Brian Bennett's Disney Trip Planner is unique. Rather than providing specific help for planning a great trip to Walt Disney World or Disneyland, "The Magical Gardens of Disney" instead points out some of the details that make WDW and Disneyland so very special—and gives ideas about how you can recreate some of that magic at home! From the very beginnings of Walt's plans for Disneyland, landscaping was intended to be an integral part of the parks. Walt learned these lessons during his many visits to the wonderful formal gardens of Europe during the late 1940's and 1950's. Tivoli Gardens, in Copenhagen, for example, gave Walt ideas about presentation and technique that he sorely wanted to have implemented in his new park. Accordingly, Morgan "Bill" Evans, the great Disney horticulturist, was hired to bring a fantastic perspective to the attractions and vistas of the parks. It was Mr. Evans that first implemented the ideas that floriculture and agriculture can—and do—give provide depth to the "show" that the park's guests were to enjoy. "The Magical Gardens of Disney" is based in part on material that Barb and I received during the International Flower & Garden Festival in 1998 and 2000 and several tours of Walt Disney World's gardens and greenhouses as well as the "backstage" tree farm and horticultural facilities. Barb has added some of her own expertise that she has acquired from working in a commercial greenhouse here in Michigan. With her knowledge of plant material that is available and that thrives way up here in zone 5, Barb might provide some information that can help you to create at home some of the wonderful show that the Disney horticulturists are so famous for. We hope you enjoy...

http://www.press.uillinois.edu/f00/hillegass.html
Flower Gardening in the Hot Midwest
USDA Zone 5 and Lower Zone 4 Linda Hillegass The Midwest presents special challenges to the aspiring flower gardener. Hot winds, intense sun, and unrelenting summer heat, combined with bitter cold in the winter and sudden shifts in temperature, call for hardy blooms and careful planning by those who tend them. In this practical, charmingly user-friendly guide to gardening success, veteran gardener Linda Hillegass outlines her tried-and-true strategies for outmaneuvering the midwestern climate to cultivate a thriving garden. Addressing both aspects of this distinctive climate, where plants must be resistant to extended periods of very high heat as well as to subzero winters, Hillegass catalogs the flowering plants best suited to the extremes of a region that extends from South Dakota and Nebraska east to Indiana (USDA zone 5 and the southern half of zone 4) and also includes Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois. She offers guidance on preparing and enriching the soil, composting, planting and transplanting, watering, pinching and pruning, and combating pests. She also provides a gardener's chronology of how long and how frequently specific plants can be expected to bloom. Her tips will help maximize each plant's beauty over the course of the season and, for the many perennials she discusses, from year to year.

by Catherine Fournier Planning a garden is, in many ways, like decorating the interior of your house. the main goal in each case is to end up with a practical, attractive living space that suits your family. Three major factors govern both the arrangement of inside and outside the home: the area, the intended use of the space, and your own personal taste. In other words, what you have, what you need and what you like. Additional foctors include the size of the area, style of the home, time available to maintain your design, and other available resources, like garden supplies and nurseries. Unlike a house, garden design changes from one week to the next. Plants grow, bloom and die back, sunlight moves across the area, seasons come and go. For many, this element of change and surprise is the main appeal of gardening. Certan plants may be quite spectacular in one season yet unobtrusive in others. Colour schemes, views and density can change from season to season too. Planning is essential to an attractive, manageable garden. If possible, plan on paper first to avoid wasted time and money. Minor adjustments can be made later, of course, but major features like walls or walks tend to be permanent, and many plants suffer from transplanting and take years to recover to their original glory. In addition, planning on paper first makes it easier to plan the garden as a whole rather than tackling it piece-meal. This helps to create a sense of continuity and harmony between one area of the garden and an other.

Easy does it:
Flower garden care tips
Where I live, on a garden acreage, garden care is almost a full-time job. (Click here for pictures of our garden.) Don't get me wrong - I'm not complaining. I love gardening and my garden, but I'm always looking for ways to make gardening easier. If you've done any gardening, you know that no garden looks after itself, but with thoughtful garden planning and some extra effort to get your soil into good shape before you plant, you can save time in spades later. Just remember - low maintenance doesn't mean no maintenance. The only "no maintenance" yard I ever saw had a front yard paved in flagstone with lonely little hole for a clump birch, which didn't live long in that hot and harsh setting. The backyard had a pool and its concrete coping went right up to the fence. When the house came on the market, it didn't sell. No one, it seemed, wanted a property so divorced from nature.
