You may now apply on-line for your Florida Teaching Certificate.
Florida teachers must hold a valid Florida teaching certificate. Although Florida participates in the interstate agreement on Qualification of Educational Personnel with a number of states, a certificate from another state does not guarantee the same certification coverage in Florida, particularly in the area of Exceptional Student Education.
Application must be made through the Office of Human Services Department of the School Board of Highlands County (SBHC). The cost for application for certification is $56.00. The process is stated below.
        1. Complete an application for teacher's certificate (Form CG-10 - Sections I through VII) within thirty (30) days of employment and attach a check or money order for $56.00 payable to the Florida Department of Education. Submit official transcripts of all college credits and degrees. An official transcript has the seal of the institution impressed on at least one page. A photocopy of the seal is unacceptable. If you do not have an official transcript, it is recommended that you request that the institution send them directly to the personnel office.
        2. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you must provide documentation that you have been legally admitted to the United States and that your immigration status does not restrict you from seeking employment.

Teachers holding a current valid florida certificate may add an area/areas bythis same process with no additional coursework needed.

Alternative Certification for Teachers. ERIC Digest 1, 1986.
Teacher shortages and public discussion about the quality of teacher education have been catalysts for the implementation of alternative routes to teacher certification for several states. Alternative certification is defined by specific state programs. While it is too early to know the results of such programs, evaluation questions can be framed. WHAT IS ALTERNATIVE CERTIFICATION FOR TEACHERS? Teacher certification, in general, is a process designed to ensure that individuals who enter teaching meet minimum standards for competence (Koff, Florio, and Cronin, 1976). These minimum standards for initial entry are set by each state; the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification produces a manual containing these certification requirements. Typically, these requirements include specific numbers of undergraduate credit hours from institutions of higher education in subject matter (such as math and English), in professional studies (such as child development and teaching methods), and in student teaching. Universities and colleges "certify" that their graduates have met these minimum credit hour standards as part of the state teacher licensure process. In some states, certificates are issued at graduation; in others, certificates are issued after a probationary teaching period.

http://www.abcte.org/admin.html
Every state is required to meet the requirement under the new federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 Whether the state department of education, state board of education or state legislative committee is responsible for overseeing teacher certification, the American Board is poised to work with your state leadership to bring about the necessary legislative or regulatory changes to ensure that multiple avenues are available to put highly qualified teachers into your classrooms. For more information on next steps and how your state can become involved with the American Board, please contact our office at 1-877-NOW-ABCTE or at contact@abcte.org "The Florida Board of Education lends its full support to the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence. The American Board's Passport to Teaching certification will encourage many young professionals and mid-career changers to enter the honorable profession of teaching. The Master Teacher Certification will recognize exceptional teachers for their impact on student learning gains. Together, these tools provide states with a reliable, high quality teacher certification that can be used alongside existing programs to achieve state compliance with the No Child Left Behind Act."
