General Information The USF School of Music is an exciting place for study and performance in one of the most artistically active areas in Florida. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered in performance, music education, jazz studies, composition and piano pedagogy. Instruction is given in all orchestral instruments (woodwind, brass, percussion, string), voice, and piano. Students majoring in music education may select an instrumental or a vocal specialization. Many students not majoring in music elect to complete a music minor, choosing from three concentrations: theory/history/literature, applied medium or composition. There are many incentives that attract music students to USF. Among these are a distinguished artist faculty; splendid ensembles that perform regularly at state, regional and national music conventions; an exceptional jazz studies program; one of the most complete electronic studios in the nation (SYCOM); and a cultural environment that boasts two professional orchestras, a professional opera company, a professional ballet company, and four of Florida's leading performing arts centers. For every music student, listening and learning opportunities never cease; for the advanced student, performing opportunities abound!

Suncoast Music Education Forum Welcome
Betty Castor, President
Dear Forum Delegates: Prior to joining the USF family, I served for a number of years as Commissioner of Education for the state of Florida. I can assure you that the topic identified by our Music Education faculty for the 1995 Suncoast Forum has great interdisciplinary importance. Assessment issues frame most of the policy questions surrounding public education today. I can think of no more timely discussion for the education profession and am eager to learn from music education what it might have to say to the larger education establishment. My heartfelt congratulations extend to our Music Education faculty for their continued commitment to this outstanding and rigorous enterprise. Best wishes to all of you as you convene for these few days on our beautiful campus. You will discover, as I have rediscovered, that this is a dynamic university.

Celebrating the talent of local and international artists, MOD is a fusion of dance, physical theatre, art, and technology that reaches beyond the proscenium. The company presents the creative vision of some of today's most outstanding choreographers, and the spirit of the next generation of performers and designers. It engages the audience with a new understanding of contemporary dance, and a new perspective on their world.
A collective of ten University of Florida student dancers are the heart of the MOD. Selected through an extensive audition process, student membership in the company is for a minimum of one year and a maximum of three years. The program requires the imaginative and physical commitment to training at professional standards; and it provides numerous creative and performance opportunities, from outreach to professional touring.
MOD aims to challenge the barriers that divide this country's diverse artistic communities and to foster innovative partnerships that reduce the geographical and cultural isolation of artists from their peers and public communities.

Voucher Program With Institute for Justice Attorney storytext('section'); Last week, the Center for Individual Freedom’s Renee Giachino, who hosts the radio talk show "Your Turn — Meeting Nonsense with Common Sense" on WEBY 1330 AM in Northwest Florida, spoke with Clark Neily, an attorney with the Institute for Justice, about school choice and the Florida voucher program. What follows are excerpts from the interview. GIACHINO: As many of the listeners know, earlier this summer a Florida appellate court declared Florida's Opportunity Scholarship Program, which most of us in the area refer to as "school vouchers," in violation of the state Constitution's strictures on spending because, in the judge’s opinion, the program benefits religious institutions. On the line with me this afternoon is my first guest, Clark Neily, who is an attorney with the Institute for Justice, a Washington-based libertarian law firm, which represents, among others, Pensacola families who are using Opportunity Scholarships and battling in the courts in Florida for school choice.

An Attorney Defends Opportunity Scholarships storytext('section'); What follows are excerpts from the interview. GIACHINO: Let me welcome back to the program, Clark Neily, who is an attorney with the Washington, D.C.-based Institute for Justice, a libertarian law firm which represents, among others, Pensacola families who are using Opportunity Scholarships or school vouchers and battling in the Florida courts for school choice. You can learn more about Clark and his organization by visiting them at www.ij.org Thanks for visiting with us, Clark. NEILY: My pleasure. Thank you for having me on again. GIACHINO: Clark, I understand that you are in Florida today because the Florida Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the school voucher case. If you will, please set up the case for the listeners who may not have been following it in the news? NEILY: Sure. The Opportunity Scholarship Program is the first state-wide voucher program in the country. What Florida does is it gives parents whose children happen to be in failing schools a life-line to get those children out of those schools and into schools of their choice, whether that is another public school or, as it was in this case, a private school. It is a wonderful program that has given these parents for the first time in their lives the ability to choose where their children go to school instead of having to put them in whatever school happens to be in their neighborhood, which are often some of the worst schools and the worst performing schools in the state.

We want children to know how to do whatever it takes to get away from someone who might harm them. The current round of Escape School programs will wrap up next week with events in Jacksonville on Tuesday and Panama City on Thursday. In all, our office will have hosted 18 Escape School events in ten different counties across Florida. More are planned in the near future, especially in areas that had to postpone Escape School events while they dealt with the recent hurricanes. Escape School can save lives by teaching children how to make smart choices and stay safe. We hope no Florida child is ever forced to rely on the skills taught at Escape School. But it is comforting to know that so many children have had the opportunity to learn the techniques . . . just in case. subscribe to e-Newsletter Other News: NATIONAL GATHERING OF AGs - Attorney General Crist hosted a gathering of state Attorneys General from across the nation when the National Association of Attorneys General held its annual winter meeting in Fort Lauderdale this week.
