What Should Be on Your School Library Media Webpage?
By Donna Baumbach, Sally Brewer, and Matt Renfroe So what should be included on school library media center Webpages? Have you ever seen two school library media centers that are exactly alike? Probably not, because they reflect the needs and interests of the students and teachers they servefrom the items on the shelves, to the arrangement of the furniture, and even, perhaps, the colors on the walls. But you never see a quality school library media center without a catalog, circulation desk, reference materials, good books, or online resources. Those are basic. No two school library media center Webpages will be alike either, but some things are basic. After examining hundreds of SLMC websites, we think the basic elements of a good school library media Website include: A mission statement
Reading Connections
Information Literacy
Information Access
Provide a link to your online catalog and tips for searching it. Include links to the district or state union catalog (in Florida, SUNLINK), and to other libraries as well. Organize materials to help students and teacher access the best information quickly. Include access to quality search engines, online databases, reference tools and other good sources of information. Curriculum Connection
There are thousands of quality Websites out there to help students with almost any assignment. Organize the best of them by subject, by teacher, or even by specific assignment. Annotate the links and keep them fresh.

Volunteers Give Six Million Hours to Hurricane Relief in Florida Largest Recorded Volunteer Mobilization Effort Valued at $100 Million WASHINGTON, DC (May 25, 2005) — More than 140,000 volunteers gave nearly six million hours of their time responding to the hurricanes that devastated Florida in 2004, according to “Extraordinary Need, Extraordinary Response: Volunteer Centers Respond to the 2004 Hurricanes,” a recently released report from the Points of Light Foundation. This volunteer effort in Florida, which is valued at more than $100 million, was the largest recorded volunteer mobilization in U.S. history. The report details how Florida Volunteer Centers capitalized upon years of emergency preparation and planning to effectively and rapidly respond to the urgent needs of Florida residents. Using lessons learned from Hurricane Andrew in 1992, Florida Governor Jeb Bush's Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service established a comprehensive emergency management plan, which places Volunteer Centers at the center of a network of agencies and organizations aligned to help citizens in times of disaster. A proclamation issued May 10, 2005 by President George W. Bush for National Hurricane Preparedness Week, 2005, urges all citizens to become aware of the dangers of hurricanes and calls upon governments, organizations, schools, the media and private citizens to share information about hurricane preparedness and response.
