Gotta love local papers! First, there's the front-page story that started it all, centering on whether silent auctions unfairly pit the "haves" vs. the "have-nots". That one was followed by this anonymous writer's belief that there's something illegal (?!?) about creative auction items . Then reporter does some homework on whether parent groups are simply fundraising machines . (No!) And the PTA jumps in with a spirited defense of its good work and important role in school. Also love this letter writer's passionate defense of her parent group . Then in my favorite development parent writes in to make great case that silent auctions aren't just after floods and locusts , as signs of society's imminent doom. In case you're wondering yes, I'm tired. And yes, I think this is a ridiculous controversy.

By KENT FISCHER LAND O'LAKES There are days, Cindy Roan says, when she feels like retiring her Parent Teacher Association name badge. As when she hosts a countywide PTA meeting and four people show up. Or like this spring when for the third consecutive year she was named president of the countywide PTA council because nobody else wanted the job. "I considered just getting rid of the council because nobody was using us," Roan said. "I thought, why even bother? Nobody even acknowledges that we exist." Instead of folding, however, Roan decided to go on the offensive. She went before the School Board and has talked to reporters in an attempt to spread the word about Pasco's dreary PTA membership. Fewer than half of the district's 53 schools have a PTA. Countywide, membership stands at 4,921, down about 600 from two years ago, mostly because three schools have recently disbanded their groups.

We are lacking the "what by when" specificity. That may be something on which the CIA committee may be able to provide the Board input. Chuck – the committee has been nice but no real purpose. I’d like to have a specific charge from the Board. Judi – I hear the same from other committees – others concurred. Terri – explained committee formation and that the Board will consider the advice of the committee. Board policy does not state how often the committees need to meet. Perhaps they can work on an ad hoc basis. Judy – Can the committee provide input on other issues? Sometimes there are legislative issues regarding teaching and leaving, FCAT, and so forth. Carl – Shared experiences on several committees prior to this. Board saw these committees as a way of getting input from community members outside of the traditional PTAs, PTOs and parent booster groups. Concurs that we need more direction from the Board. Chuck – Encourage Board to use this committee as a sounding board I.E. "what kind of communication strategies might you suggest to communicate with the public in a more effective way?"
