Florida Lemon Law
The Lemon Law program has proven to be an effective means of recourse for Florida consumers who have purchased or leased NEW defective autos. Buying a new car is one of the most important and expensive purchases you will make. If you find yourself going back and forth to the dealer for frequent repairs, the fun and satisfaction of owning a new car can quickly change into a frustrating and costly experience. If you have invested hard-earned cash into a "showroom lemon," help is just a phone call away. Recognizing that "new" does not always translate into "problem-free," the Florida Legislature in 1988 revised a law that makes car manufacturers responsible – under certain conditions for replacing defective vehicles or refunding consumers’ money. Commonly known as Florida’s automobile "Lemon Law," the Motor Vehicle Warranty Enforcement Act established arbitration boards throughout the state to hear and settle complaints between car manufacturers and owners. Consumers who are successful in Lemon Law arbitration have received either refunds or replacement vehicles. Visit the

Successful completion of this national, comprehensive, two-day written exam entitles paralegals to use the designation "CLA" after their names. This signifies that these paralegals are capable of providing superior services to the law firms and companies who employ them and are eminently qualified to perform those services. As of March 2003, there are 11,678 CLAs in the country and 3,039 of those are from the State of Florida. CLA's are required to have 50 hours of continuing legal education credits over a five year period to maintain the CLA certification. For more information on the CLA and CLAS Examinations, visit NALA's website at www.nala.org Certified Florida Legal Assistant ("CFLA") PAF extablished the CFLA Examination in 1980 to complement NALA's CLA program. Its purpose is to provide a standard for measurement of advanced skills and knowledge in Florida law for those persons who have achieved the CLA certification. PAF began administering the CFLA exam in 1983, and was the first in the nation to administer such an exam at the state level. As of May 2003, there are 130 CFLAs in the State of Florida.

Back to Research Guides page Florida Case/Court Research Florida’s state court system is comprised of 67 County Courts; 20 Circuit Courts; 5 Courts of Appeals; and the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is the state’s highest judicial authority. It sits seven judges. County courts are the scene of more mundane legal matters, such as traffic violations and small claims court. Researching case law in Florida is very similar to researching the opinions of any other State or Federal Court. Depending on the information you start out with and the information you wish to obtain, there are several sources you can utilize. Keep in mind that since approximately 70% of cases decided are actually printed, there may be times when a trip to the courthouse is necessary to obtain opinions in slip form. DIGESTS Digests are designed to be used as an index to the case reporters. Florida cases are digested in the following sets: West’s Florida Digest and Florida Digest 2d - Utilizes the West Publishing Co.’s system of topics and key numbers to provide access to state cases. Both editions include table of cases and descriptive word indexes. The Florida Digest should be consulted for cases prior to 1935. Volumes are kept up to date via annual pocket parts. Both Federal and State (District Court of Appeals and Supreme Court only) cases are included. (Florida Collection, Reference, and Core B). Decennial Digests These include cases from every state and federal court, so Florida cases are included (again, only District Court of Appeals and Supreme court). However, the set is cumbersome to use. Published by West, they utilize the key number system, and also include a table of cases and a descriptive word index.
