Russian Judges Tour New UF Law Campus GAINESVILLE, Fla. - East met West this week at the University of Florida this summer, as a delegation of Russian judges toured the newly-renovated campus of the Levin College of Law. Five federal judges from across Russia visited Florida in June to learn more about the U.S. justice system, part of a sister-city project linking Gainesville and the Russian city of Novorossiisk. The visit was also sponsored by the Open World Program at the Library of Congress, which fosters exchange of ideas between political leaders and citizens of Russia and the United States. "The Russian judicial system is undergoing massive change, and we have a chance to influence the new system in a positive way," said UF law alumnus Steve Kalishman (JD 82) a founder of the Gainesville/Novorossiisk Sister City Program. "The Russians have some very insightful things to say about our system as well." The Russian judges were given a tour of the newly-renovated Holland Hall, including the Lawton M. Chiles Legal Information Center * which, at more than 100,000 square feet, will be the largest academic law library in the South when it opens later this year. The judges also sat down with several UF law professors to discuss the differences between the Russian and American justice systems.

... Legal Information the Web Criminal law defines certain acts or omissions deemed illegal by the legislature. Criminal law offences range from "traditional" crimes such as murder, assault, robbery and theft, to newer crimes such as driving with a blood alcohol level "over 80." Criminal Procedure: An Overview In Canada, criminal law is enacted by the federal Parliament. Criminal procedure in Canada is concerned with criminal proceedings in the criminal courts and such matters as conduct within the courtroom, competency of witnesses, oaths and affirmations, and presentation of evidence. In a narrow sense, criminal procedure covers pleading, evidence, and practice. In a broader sense, it encompasses rules in the Criminal Code which deal with police powers, right to counsel, search warrants, interim release, witnesses, etc. In the United States, most criminal law is set by the individual states, although the Federal government has adopted its own criminal code in Title 18 which deals with activities that extend beyond state boundaries or have special impact on Federal government operations. Criminal procedure in the United States consists of the law governing the series of proceedings through which the substantive criminal law is enforced. Procedure in criminal trials in federal courts is outlined in Title 18. Statutes set the framework for criminal procedure in the states, subject to certain constitutional limits. Canada

Webbing the Law
Markus Dirk Dubber
, SUNY Buffalo Tired of using bulky casebooks that don't do justice to your subject? Me too. That's why, for the past two years, I've been teaching my lecture courses and seminars on criminal law with a website, the Penal Law Web . Even if you're not a criminal law teacher, read on. The general approach underlying the Penal Law Web can easily be adapted to other legal subjects, especially those revolving around codes or other systematic statements of law, such as restatements. Read on also if you feel woefully underskilled, understaffed, or underpaid to set up a law web. If I can do it, for free with nothing more than the web browser you're using right now to read this, so can you. Don't read on if you think that a course website shouldn't do more than post assignments and manage e-mail chats. The Penal Law Web doesn't do either. Webs Not Casebooks For several years, I kept getting increasingly frustrated with the casebook I was using in my criminal law class. It seemed to cover irrelevant topics in excruciating detail, and give short shrift to things I considered of crucial importance. After years of cutting and pasting, I suddenly realized that the problem wasn't the particular casebook, but casebooks in general. What I needed was a teaching tool that was expansive and flexible enough to reflect

Depending on the region, some jurisdictions offer more detailed explanation of the act of home gambling than others. Alaska Criminal Law Article 2 (Gambling Offenses) in Chapter 66 (Offenses Against Public Health and Decency) states that it is an offense to engage in unlawful gambling, BUT that it is an "affirmative defense" to prosecution for the person to claim having been part of a "social game". A "social game" is defined as gambling in a home where no house player (barring Home Craps and other home casino games), no house bank, and no house odds exist, and where there is no house income (rake) from the operation of the game. No House and no rake means that home gambling is a defense against unlawful gambling, and legal in the state of Alaska.

Home Traffic Accidents FAQ
Traffic Accidents FAQ
If you've been in an accident, this article tells you what to do and answers your questions about liability, proof, and insurance.
What's Below:
What should I do if I'm involved in a traffic accident?
The most important thing you can do is to document the entire situation by taking careful notes soon after your accident. While this step is often overlooked, it can help make the entire claim process easier on you and increase your chances of receiving all the compensation to which you are entitled. Having notes to remind you of all the details of what happened, and what you went through, is far easier and far more accurate than relying on your memory. Write things down as soon as you can: begin with what you were doing and where you were going, the people you were with, the time and the weather. Include every detail of what you saw, heard and felt. Be sure to add anything you remember hearing anyone a person involved in the accident or a witness say about the accident.

Business owners need to be increasingly aware of how they might run afoul of criminal laws in the operation of their businesses. Newspapers today are so full of reports of corporate criminal investigations and prosecutions that most business owners do not even realize that business entities were once thought to be incapable of committing crimes. Under the common law, corporations were considered artificial constructs without minds of their own, incapable of forming the intent necessary to be guilty of crimes. All this has changed. During the last two decades, the federal and state governments have increased the number of criminal investigations of businesses and the people who run them. High-profile prosecutions of large corporations have caught the attention of the press and the public.
Today, business owners and corporate executives should have a basic understanding of how criminal laws can impact their businesses. This chapter is designed to acquaint the reader with criminal statutes that most affect businesses and the steps businesses can take to avoid criminal liability. It outlines the fundamentals of corporate criminal law, such as the elements of a crime and some of the different types of corporate felonies and white collar crime.
