The National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) is an academic competition for high school students that focuses on ocean-related topics. The NOSB was conceived by, and is conducted under the auspices of, the Consortium of Oceanographic Research and Education (CORE). CORE, based in Washington, D.C., is an association of U.S. oceanographic research institutions, universities, laboratories, and aquaria. CORE's 74 members represent the nucleus of U.S. research and education about the oceans.
The NOSB is designed to test students' knowledge of the ocean. Every year, member institutions of CORE host regional tournaments around the nation as the first round of the NOSB. This year an estimated 2,300 students and educators representing 380 high schools competed in 22 regional competitions. Science teachers volunteered their time outside of the classroom as coaches to prepare the students for the competition.

Lincoln Park Academy Harborside Program

OCEANS - Organization for Curriculum Exploration and Advancement of Natural Sciences
Lincoln Park Academy Harborside Program

Our innovative and nationally recognized Harborside Program, created through a cooperative partnership between Harbor Branch and the St. Lucie County School Board, links high-achieving juniors and seniors from the International Baccalaureate curriculum at Lincoln Park Academy (LPA) with the scientific staff and resources at Harbor Branch. This program, which combines formal classes with hands-on research and field opportunities, provides a "school within a workplace" for its students and provides unparalleled access to the world-class scientists and resources at Harbor Branch.
During their last two school periods, students and their teachers from LPA are brought by bus from Fort Pierce to their "real-world" classroom to perform their senior IB Chemistry, senior IB Biology, and non-IB junior Marine Environmental Studies course. Both Harbor Branch staff and the LPA faculty provide instruction. Harbor Branch scientists and graduate students also serve as resources and role models for the students.
In addition to their "regular" class and laboratory time at Harbor Branch, LPA students are provided the opportunity for independent and group research as well as experience aboard an oceanographic research vessel. Three one-day cruises aboard the R/V Sea Diver are performed to investigate ocean dynamics, e.g., the effects of ocean temperature on nutrient levels and the subsequent assemblage of planktonic and benthic organisms. These cruises allow students to gain experience in near-shore and offshore water and biological sampling with the use of sophisticated collecting gear.

Data Collection and Analysis in Florida
The pattern for higher education assessment in Florida has been to assess students beginning with K-12 and on to entry and eventual success in college. In general, policies and practices in the state have focused on: 1. The rigors of student preparation in high school 2. The readiness of students to do college level work 3, The basic skills acquired through general education Much of the assessment that is done also focuses on the institutions themselves and their performance. There has been a long history of focusing on goals for efficiency and productivity; these seem to be the definition of institutional quality in the eyes of many policymakers. Florida has few formal, statewide policies in place, but there are three main practices that are ongoing for higher education: A regular and systematic program review process A growing data reporting and collection effort The K-20 Data Warehouse is a first-in-the-nation education database. This database will be a comprehensive collection of information on all students in the state, for all levels of education they attend. The level of data will be massive, with information on student demographics, academic information, and financial aid, for starters. The system will also track a student's high school class, their college destinations after graduation, any need for remediation, and later performance. Institutions are also examined, including the performance of instructors based on how well students subsequently perform. It will allow for an analysis of students across systems, including articulation between schools and a student's progression. Presently, some of this data being warehoused is publicly available; some is summarized by the Board, and some remains unavailable.
