Florida public schools and public and private institutions of higher education can receive funds to have students learn about these issues and educate their peers, parents, and the public about them. This innovative partnership was formed in the wake of Florida’s four hurricanes in 2004. The Department is coordinating with the Florida Education Foundation in releasing this application package to allow adequate planning and development by applicants. Funds will be awarded in two rounds of application. At least $110,000 will be available for one-year awards. Applicants may apply for up to $7,500.

Workshop Info 2005 Announcement 2004 Agenda 2004 Specifications 2004 Scrapbook Education is a key part of FIPR's mission. Legislators intended the Institute to be a place people could turn to for information on phosphate issues. From the beginning, FIPR has had a library, which has become the most comprehensive collection of information on phosphate in the country and likely the world. Traditionally, the Institute has focused its education efforts on technical workshops and conferences-local, regional and international. In 1997 the FIPR Board decided to expand FIPR's educational efforts to include teachers in grades K-12. An advisory committee was formed and an education coordinator was hired. FIPR's varied research reflects the many aspects of science and social studies that naturally illustrate benchmarks children must master according to the Florida Sunshine State Standards. A dragline, for example, illustrates concepts of force and motion, while listening and speaking skills can be polished in a debate about future land uses for permitting and mining. Even in the earliest grades, concepts such as plants and animals needing food and certain habitat characteristics to thrive can provide an opportunity to tie the classroom to the local topic of phosphate.

    Florida Builds Cheap!
And Gets What it Pays For! The Florida Legislature convenes in special session to consider the growing backlog in school construction. It costs taxpayers less to build good buildings than crappy ones, says Florida Design Initiative Director, Larry Peterson. Why do we continue our stick-in-the-mud, money-wasting ways, when both the Disney Corporation and the State's Department of Management Services are actively demonstrating more-efficient, cost-saving practices? Wake up, Florida!
    Posted 21 October 1997
Readers' Comments added 16 December 1997
Cheap Schools The budgeting process for building new schools and government buildings should be viewed as wise investing. The budgeting process for building new schools and government buildings is conducted as an exercise in reducing spending when it should be viewed as wise investing. Legislators and local school boards talk about "buying" new buildings and consistently strive to "buy" them at bottom-dollar prices. This is a myopic approach for reducing the first cost of new construction without regard to the heavy burden of high energy, operating and maintenance costs that often come with cheap design and construction; and without regard to the quality of the environment they create. Our public servants would do well to see their fiduciary responsibilities as investors providing for the long-term public benefit rather than masters of the knife in the art of the short-term deal. Their success in cutting the great budget deal is often the public's loss, both in terms of having to occupy the resulting poor-quality environments and in being stuck with the bills for buildings that perform badly and expensively.

What is FSU Physics Department doing about science in K-12 schools?
by Paul Cottle The FSU Physics Department is working hard to improve science teaching in K-12 schools in Florida - and the nation Paul Cottle with a future high school science teacher during a session of "Physics for Science Teachers." So what does this have to do with the FSU Physics Department, where the department's research programs and track record of educating successful Ph.D.-level physicists has led to the department being ranked in the top 50 in the nation and assuming a position of leadership in the State of Florida? The answer - which may be surprising to some - is ... EVERYTHING. After all, Florida State University is a public institution, and its faculty members are public servants. If we can bring new opportunities to Florida's citizens by improving science instruction in the state's K-12 schools, then we have an obligation to do so. So, we have a noble reason for making our schools better places to learn the physical sciences. But we have another reason based on self-interest: the field of physics will only be supported by the taxpayers of our state and nation if they appreciate the work we are doing. If these taxpayers are scientifically illiterate, support for the field of physics will decline. A recent analysis of federal funding trends by the American Association for the Advancement of Science demonstrated that the decline in federal support for research in the physical sciences has already begun.
