Program Description
Geography at Jacksonville University is about understanding patterns of human and natural activity in the world around us. The geography program allows students to pursue their interests in human, physical/environmental, or technical geography including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) while developing broad-based analytic skills. Curriculum Overview
Academic Preparation
The geography major has no requirements for admission beyond those required for admission to the University.
Jacksonville and its North Florida surroundings offer a rich laboratory for geographers interested in urban studies, economic geography, demographics, coastal research, and the natural environment. Computer facilities are available for research into demographics, computer cartography, and geographic information systems.
Students are encouraged to participate in internships and other activities that will be of value when they enter the work force. Geography students at JU have worked in internships with a number of nearby companies and government and non-profit agencies, including the Jacksonville Port Authority, Blue Cross-Blue Shield, local newspapers and television stations, Jacksonville Division of GIS, and the Duval County Tax Assessor.

Geography Geologists estimate that Florida is one of the youngest parts of the continental U.S., the last land mass to emerge from the ocean. The Florida landscape is sprinkled with 10,000 lakes ranging in size from one acre to the 450,000-acre Lake Okeechobee, the second largest freshwater lake in the U.S. Nearly one-third of the state's lakes are located in four Central Florida countiesLake Orange, Osceola and Polk.
There are more than 300 known springs in the state and 27 are classified as "first magnitude." First magnitude springs produce at least 100 cubic feet of water per second. The longest of the state's 166 rivers is the Suwannee which trails 177 miles (283 km) through the northern part of the state.
No part of Florida is more than 60 miles (96 km) from its famous beaches. For most people, beaches and palm trees are synonymous with Florida's landscape. However, the state is quite diverse with upland hardwood forests and hills in the north, central highlands which range from flat to slight hills, coastal lowlands along the perimeter and southern lowlands.
The highest point in Florida is 345 feet above Sea Level with the lowest being at Sea Level.

FL Florida was named by the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León in 1513. He called the region "La Florida", roughly translated as Land of the Flowers. He probably chose this name because he was impressed by the many colorful flowers and because he sighted it on Easter, which is called "Pascua Florida" in Spanish. Ponce de Leon, in search of the elusive fountain of youth, was the first European to explore Florida. Statehood for Florida came in 1845 (27th state). St. Augustine, founded by the Spanish in 1565, is the oldest permanent European settlement in the continental United States. Florida is one of the leading tourist states in the United States. Great stretches of sandy beaches and a warm, sunny climate make Florida a year-round vacationland. People enjoy swimming, fishing and water skiing in the inland and coastal waters. Major attractions include Disney World, Miami Beach, the Everglades National Park and the Florida Keys. Tourists may also visit historic sites that date back to the Spanish explorers.

Several different types of fossils were found in clay rich pockets within 50 million year old limestone such as, frog, turtle, alligator, fish, tapir, and ground sloth.
There was a lot of work involved but the Geo majors were rewarded with the specimen found.
Dr. Sam Couch, Assistant Professor of Geography, shows the standard method for this type of field work.
The application of wet paper to a ground sloth femur that is to be jacketed prevents the plaster from sticking to the actual specimen.
The area must be completely covered before the plaster is applied.
Strips of burlap soaked in plaster are placed over the paper to form a jacket that will protect the fossil while being transported to the Florida Museum of Natural History.
A plaster jacket ensures that the smallest particles and surrounding soil remain together until further examination at the museum.
A proud team stands beside their latest accomplishment: a successful paleontological dig and their first plaster jacket.

HEADLINE: Americans lost in world of geography

BODY:
What geography is: where things are located, why they are located there and the consequences of their location. Why everyone should care: The world is changing rapidly, and Americans lag far behind in their knowledge of other lands and other people.
A 2002 survey conducted in nine countries for National Geographic found that American young adults (18 to 24 years old) came in eighth, ahead of only their counterparts in Mexico. Americans were particularly weak in questions concerning the Middle East and Asia. "This says a lot about the way we go through our lives, without taking the time to think about the rest of the world," said Roger Andresen, a former resident of Miami who has traveled widely and runs A Broader View of Atlanta, which produces the Geography Olympics, and sells puzzles designed to improve geographic literacy. "We are being forced to function in a global economy, so it really pays to know your way around the world," said Tom Boswell, chairman of the University of Miami's geography department. "Geography is a field that has slipped between the gaps. As a result, the rest of the world knows a lot more about the rest of the world than we do."

Florida has a major stake in the movement toward hemispheric free trade. For Florida, geography is destiny. Originally part of the Spanish empire, Florida is as much part of the Caribbean as it is of the Southeastern United States. History, population, culture and commerce link the state intimately to Latin America and the Caribbean. Canada is another significant trading partner, and many Canadians migrate to the state during their harsh winter months. Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean are major trading partners with Florida, with nearly $25 billion in merchandise trade and hundreds of millions of dollars in tourist revenue. Perhaps more than any other U.S. state, Florida has benefited by the rebounding Latin American and Caribbean economies. Indeed, Florida's trade fortunes in recent years have been very favorably impacted by surges of US imports into Central America, Colombia and Argentina. Co-production and twin-plant operations in the Caribbean and Florida have further linked our economies together.

Florida Climate
Florida has a semi-tropical climate. It becomes oppressively hot and humid during the months of June through August. Expect temperatures to exceed 90 degrees F (32 C) and humidity to hover near 100 percent. The most pleasant weather is usually found during winter months between December and March when temperatures are more likely around 75 degrees (25 C) and the humidity becomes bearable. It rains nearly every day in most months (perhaps less during the winter), but the showers are generally short and the sun usually quickly reappears. Hurricane season lasts from August through late October. During these months, fierce tropical storms can bring dangerously high winds and inundating rainfalls. Florida is the sunshine state and also the Thunderstorm and Lightning State. Due to the abundance of warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and the hot tropical sun, conditions are perfect for the formation of thunderstorms. Every year, many injuries and fatalities are caused by lightning strikes on Florida golf courses and beaches. Nature has not endowed Florida with many mountains, rolling hills or panoramic vistas, as its terrain is rather flat. But it has gorgeous white sand beaches and blue lagoons lined with palm trees and tropical flora.

The underlying hypothesis is that the presence and concentration of bohemians in an area creates an environment or milieu that attracts other types of talented or high human capital individuals. The presence of such human capital in turn attracts and generates innovative, technology-based industries. To explore these factors

Any Floridian bewildered by the attention the two presidential candidates and their bevy of running mates, wives, children and allies continue to lavish on the Sunshine State need only to remember a number: 27.
Twenty-seven as in a full 10 percent of 270, the number of electoral votes needed to win the presidency. Twenty-seven as in the single biggest chunk of said electoral votes still up in the air.
"If you look at the maps and the way this election is shaping up, as goes Florida, so goes the nation," said Brett Doster, head of the Bush campaign in the state.
"Hard," said Kerry adviser Mike McCurry, describing Bush's challenge to win re-election without Florida. "They could. But I don't see how they can win without Florida and Ohio . . . I feel real good about what we have going on here and feel real good about Ohio, but we're not taking anything for granted."
For decades, Republicans saw Florida as part of the "Solid South" that emerged when the party wooed white, Democratic segregationists angry with Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson for their support of civil rights laws.

The Florida Keys have been designated a National Marine Sanctuary (like an underwater national park) in order to protect one of America's only living coral reefs. Some areas of the 2800 square nautical mile sanctuary will be set aside for recouperation and some for special uses (jetskis in some areas, non-motorized boats only in others). Everyone has an interest in the fate of the Sanctuary and our country's underwater resources. The final draft of the Mangement Plan for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is being submitted to state and federal officials for their approval. Tell the policy makers that you want strong protection for the seagrass beds, mangroves, and coral reef. Ask them to support strong regulations and the necessary funding to preserve the habitat that is home to the Key's unique marinelife, from parrotfish to manatees, herons to crocodiles.
