Formation of Leon County Established: December 29, 1824
    Parent County: Gadsden
    County Seat: Tallahassee
Derived from Gadsden County, Leon County was created by the Territorial Legislature on December 29, 1824. It was named for Juan Ponce de Leon, a Spanish explorer and Florida's founder i.e. the first European to reach Florida. Leon County is located in north Florida and is bordered by the state of Georgia and by Wakulla, Liberty, Gadsden, and Jefferson counties. It has 26 square miles of water. The principal place in Leon County is Tallahassee the county seat and the state capital. Tallahassee Becomes the State Capital
When East and West Florida were united to become a territory of the United States, both Pensacola and St. Augustine desired to become the state capital. One idea that was considered was to alternate the meetings of the legislature in each community. Since this proved impractical, a compromise was reached to pick a site that would be of equal distance between Pensacola and St. Augustine. Tallahassee, an Apalachee Indian settlement which meant "old town" or "old fields", was thus selected to become the capital of the new U.S. territory of Florida.
