Art Museums provide family fun, whimsy and creativity
Lynn Behan
South Florida Parenting
E-mail story
Print story South Florida's many art museums provide much more than pictures on a wall. They're proof that kids and museums do mix.
With special programs, activities, tours and classes for kids and families, you have no need to worry about little hands touching the wrong thing or little feet disturbing another visitor's contemplative moment.
And believe it or not, any worries about kids being bored in a roomful of fine art simply evaporate when you take the time to enjoy a cool, quiet afternoon or take in a family program at an art museum.
Lyn Kurpiewski, education program coordinator at the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, says the job of her department is to help visitors understand what they are seeing.
"Our goal is to let parents know that a visit to the museum can be a calming, peaceful and educational time to spend with their children," she says.
Even if your kids seem to have two left thumbs and no talent for art, that doesn't mean they won't have fun looking at it and talking about what they see. Give your children the chance to appreciate the arts by visiting any fine arts museum. You can enjoy the museums on your own or by participating in a variety of family programs. Dates and times of special programs do change, so make sure to contact the museum for details prior to visiting.

Florida Initiative As a national early childhood funder, the Foundation has a special focus on improving the infant/toddler care. In 1998, we launched our "Florida Initiative," designed to improve training and infrastructure for high quality birth to three care and education in one state. Working in conjunction with the Starting Points coalition, the Foundation sponsored two "summit" meetings where Florida's infant/toddler leaders shared information and discussed possibilities for strategic collaboration. Through a listserv and some smaller meetings following the first summit, participants established a collaborative action agenda. Much of this agenda has been accomplished through on-going projects, new legislative mandates and initiatives, and some new collaborative ventures. Other high priority items were supported with Foundation grants. The second summit explored progress and continuing needs in four areas.

Training Effectiveness Research Project
This research project is a two-phased effort related to a comprehensive training and certification program of the Florida Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) working in conjunction with the Professional Development Center. It is a project that seeks to establish an empirical basis for understanding those conditions that create successful, cost-effective training programs for Florida child protection counselors. The first phase of this research will determine the extent to which the job training impacts individual employee performance, and the second phase will determine the impact that this training enterprise has on the performance of the organization as a whole. As such, the research will address both transfer of training and organizational improvement. The project includes an analysis of both existing, as well as newly collected, data.
An Overview of the Research
Background of the Study
In 1996 The Florida Department of Children and Family Services began a new approach to training and certifying all state child protection counselors. This two-part program involves:
