Frost and Freeze Protection for Vegetable Crops Grown in Florida
By Eric Simonne and George Hochmuth
Protecting crops from occasional frost and freezes has been a continual problem for vegetable growers throughout Florida. Several options are available including sprinkler irrigation, soil banking, row covers, raising water table, and cover crops.
Working Definition
Frost and freeze protection consists of various methods to protect plants from damage from freezing temperatures.
Frost and Freeze Protection - Things to Do
  • The best method of frost-freeze protection is proper site selection. Visualizing the flow of cold air, as if it were water, and its possible buildup in low spots or behind cold air dams is the most effective site selection method. If a site has good cold air drainage, then it is likely a good production site as far as frost-freeze damage is concerned. Use soil banking (covering the crop with soil) for crops such as potatoes which have large energy reserves in the seed piece to grow out from the soil covering. Early melons, sweet corn, or beans may be planted in a small trench to protect seedlings from frost by the warm surrounding soil mass.

July 1995 Veterinarian Position Update #2
We have received a number of highly qualified applicants for the veterinarian position to be housed in Hillsborough County. The initial search and screen committee met June 20th to narrow the field down to four candidates. From there we will establish the interview schedule which will include the candidates coming down to meet with the "industry". As soon as I have a list of the dates and times, I'll try and get word out. In the meantime, Ruth Francis-Floyd is still offering her assistance to anyone who needs help, and is making weekly trips out of Gainesville. If you want to get some fish looked at, or you would like for her to visit your farm, give her a call at (904)392-9617 Ext 229. We Finally Got It!
...Bayluscide Usage cont.
A couple of pointers and facts that have come out from some of the treatments done in the last few weeks... 1) The snails are most active at night. The half life of Bayluscide is about 24 hours. Therefore, it appears that the best time of the day to apply Bayluscide is after dark, after the pool has been allowed to fill. Treating in the morning does not get a complete kill. 2) Bayluscide at 1 pound per surface acre does not kill many of the fish the industry is raising. This is not to say that it is safe to use Bayluscide where fish are important. It does say that Bayluscide should not be used to kill existing fish when snails are also present.
