Welcome to the Center for Intensive English Studies (CIES) at Florida State University. CIES' mission is to teach English to international citizens from all parts of the world. That is why CIES is known as the school "where the world comes to learn English."
Founded in 1980, CIES has educated more than 3,000 students who strengthened their English language skills to:
  • prepare for full-time study at English-speaking universities
  • prepare for successful careers that required English fluency
  • return to their countries with strong English skills
CIES is a small school. Only 50 students are admitted every semester so that teachers can work personally with each one. At CIES, every student succeeds! And, every student makes many friends from all parts of the world. Also, CIES teachers are experts in teaching English as a second language; all were selected based on their years of successful teaching experience and their advanced academic degrees. CIES is known internationally for its professional faculty.
CIES is housed in an historic building in the middle of the campus of Florida State University. The building was erected in 1880 and has been remodeled several times, most recently in 2000. All classes are taught here, and CIES students are "in the heart of the university."

Executive Summary State legislatures across the nation are considering statewide planning reforms to grapple with population and urban growth on the metropolitan fringe. Many of these efforts are driven by theoretical concepts of urban planning and practice, and lack a rigorous assessment of their possible impacts and unintended consequences. Nevertheless, the impacts on the quality of life for households and families can be significant, and sometimes they can have unintended negative side effects. This is probably most evident in the case of housing availability and affordability. Surprisingly little analysis has examined the real-world impacts of these programs based on their performance despite the potential for significant, negative side effects. Decades of scholarly research has shown growth controls can reduce housing affordability if they increase costs and limit the supply of new units. Yet, with the exception of a few case studies of individual cities and regions, almost no attention has been paid to the practical effects of implementing this new wave of statewide planing reforms; virtually all the attention has centered on designing and passing Smart Growth legislation and implementing the plans. Smart Growth and Housing Affordability: Evidence from Statewide Planning Laws begins to fill this void by assessing the effects of statewide planning on the price and affordability of housing in three key states: Florida, Oregon, and Washington.

Margaret Lowman, Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies and Director of Environmental Initiatives, and Co-directors of Environmental Studies Jonathan Miller and Julie Morris. An interdisciplinary program, Environmental Studies draws students from varied backgrounds. Ideally students bring skills from several disciplines to bear on questions regarding the relationship between people and the environment. The program is built around five key concepts: scale, systems, place, values, and change. Environmental problems (and solutions) occur at different scales from local to global. Ecological systems, political systems, and social systems interact in complicated ways. Sense of place, place attachment and values are key factors that must be incorporated in successful solutions to environmental problems. Understanding change, and effecting change, are key skills for anyone working in the environmental field.

Florida's fascination
Sunshine, beaches and Disney World may be Florida's most famous attractions, but it has much more to offer including laid-back cities, a unique national park and plenty of history. Gillian Evans finds out more.
Students and tourists alike flock to the Sunshine State because of its wonderful beaches, world-famous tourist attractions and, of course, the weather. ''Florida has hot summers [and] the winters are very mild and comfortable,'' asserts Ingrid Powers, Director of Rennert Miami (formerly Accent on Language). ''Moreover, it has a lot of attractions and is one of the number-one spots for tourism in the States.' Marco Pinna from The Language Academy (TLA) in Fort Lauderdale adds that the great weather means students can make the most of the area's natural attractions. ''With average temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius, low humidity and warm waters, students attend classes and enjoy the beach, while most of the world has frigid temperatures,'' he says.
