RAIN, RAIN, DON’T GO AWAY – GIS AND THE SELECTION OF A SITE FOR A MOBILEHOME ROOF PRESERVATIVE APPLICATION SERVICE By Michael A. Murphy Geography 581, Spring 2000 Dr. Christopher Williamson, AICP Paper 4 – GIS Project My hypothetical client, MobileGuard, Inc., needs to know where in the U.S. to locate their first sales and service office. They have patented a process for sealing and protecting mobilehome roofs that is cheaper and far more effective than current options. Their process is environmentally friendly. They have venture capital backing to open a pilot office, with more offices to open if the pilot office is effective. The problem is where to locate the pilot office so as to insure it has the greatest possible chance for success. Marketing analysis indicates success is most likely if the pilot office is near the largest number of mobilehomes possible and that the treatment will appeal to mobilehome owners subjected to the heaviest precipitation. Step One is to find out where the largest number of mobilehomes are located. Step Two is to find out where the greatest portion of them is located in potential first site cities within the heaviest precipitation areas.

Where Are You on the Talent Map?
What's the secret to power hiring? Location, location, location. If you want to attract the right kind of people, it's not enough to be the right kind of company. Your company needs to be in the right kind of place. From: Issue 42 January 2001 Page 102 By: Bill Breen Photographs by: Kate Swan Illustrations by: Bruce McCall Want to get a quick take on how your city or region is faring in the all-out competition for talent? Start by determining the percentage of gays that are in your population. The "gay index" is the leading predictor of a city's ability to attract and retain knowledge workers, claims Richard Florida, founder and director of the Software Industry Center at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University and professor of regional economic development. It's not that gay employees themselves are critical for building a tech-savvy base of operations. It's that a gay population is a dependable indicator of the environmental factors tolerance, openness to diversity, and lots of urban-oriented amenities that are critical for attracting world-class workers.

The St. Johns flows north for 310 miles before turning east to the ocean at Jacksonville. Jacksonville's deep-water port is the 14th largest in the U.S. and handles shipments from around the globe. The "River City" is Florida's most populous city as well as its leading financial and insurance center. Jacksonville has more than 800,000 residents, and the six-county Northeast Florida region has more than 1.1 million. Population data from the U.S. Census Bureau:
2003 estimate: 817,480
2000 actual: 778,879
Percent change, April 1, 2000 to July 1, 2003 5.0% There is room to grow on Florida's First Coast. When the city was consolidated with Duval County in 1968, Jacksonville became the largest city in land area in the contiguous United States, covering 841 square miles. The area's population increased by more than 21 percent between 1990 and 2000, making Jacksonville's commitment to managed growth especially important.

This lesson is part of a 9 week long study of Florida. One of the major components is the creation of the "Fabulous Florida" booklet. Each student makes their own booklet and works individually and cooperatively to complete it. During this period, students work in their booklet 2-3 times a week. They are also working on multimedia research projects individually or in groups and we do other activities during the week. To create a booklet: Tape three 12" X 18" sheets of tag board together down the long side to fold easily together. Front page: Write title "Fabulous Florida" near the top. Color, label, and glue state symbols. Page 2: The Shape of Florida: Students choose three of the following maps of Florida to illustrate:
    • Important cities
    • Animal Habitats
