First public chiropractic school causes stir
Proposal at Florida State derided by doctors, faculty
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Some Florida State University professors have been circulating a parody map showing the campus of the future, with a new Bigfoot Institute, a School of Astrology and a Crop Circle Simulation Laboratory. It's a not-so-subtle jab in a growing debate over a proposal to build a chiropractic college on this campus - the first such school at a public university in the nation. More than 500 professors, including the university's two Nobel laureates, have signed a petition opposing the school and a handful have even threatened to resign rather than teach alongside what they consider a "pseudoscience." $9 million proposal
The dispute - the biggest academic furor in recent memory at Florida State - is heading to a showdown decision later this month, pitting FSU faculty and doctors against chiropractors and powerful lawmakers who pushed the $9 million proposal through the Legislature. T.K. Wetherell, the normally blunt president of Florida State, has been unusually reticent on the chiropractic flap, deferring to his provost.

Plan for Education
While there is no magic bullet that will solve every problem facing our education system, with the following principles, we will succeed in making education the paramount duty of our state. The fundamental premise at the core of the state's education policy should be unequivocal: every child can learn and no child should be left behind.
  • We are setting high standards and provide adequate funding, and then hold schools and educators accountable for the performance ofthe students they are entrusted to educate.

Grouping/Scheduling School Administrators Article SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS ARTICLE Alternative School Calendars: Smart Idea or Senseless Experiment? If American students are to compete effectively in a global economy, do they need to spend substantially more time in school? Would increasing the length of the school year or school day raise students' achievement, or would it be more advantageous to alter how we use the time we currently have? Many school systems are experimenting with alternative instructional schedules in an attempt to find out. Included: Year-round schools, later start times, the four-day week, trimesters, and more! Are American schools serving up a quality education for all students? Although we provide students more years of formal schooling than any other nation, our school year is short, usually only 180 days. The world's average is 200 to 220 days per year, and Japan's is 243. (See "Give Kids More School,"

Orlando Sentinel Staff Writers Originally published on April 18, 2004 Florida's scramble for thousands of new teachers has opened the schoolhouse door for a new kind of recruit: one with no education degree, classroom experience or college-honed teaching skills. Hundreds of middle-age career shifters and college graduates who never studied teaching are working in classrooms across the state, more the products of night school than colleges of education. These newly minted instructors often teach children by day, then learn the basics of the job at night and on weekends.
