China braces for further floods
As China's southern provinces reel from some of the worst flooding in years, state media says there is more to come BEIJING, China China is readying itself for further heavy flooding, with heavy rains expected to hit the already devastated southern provinces in the coming days. Flooding is forecast in Hunan, Jiangxi, and Fujian provinces and the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, the China Daily reported Monday. Army units are preparing for emergency operations, with water levels expected to reach 120 to 180 mm in some areas, while Premier Zhu Rongji stressed that flood control "has an extremely important bearing on economic development and social stability." Already tens of thousands of soldiers, People's Armed Police and reservists are part of rescue operations in at least seven provinces as land and mudslides hamper efforts to stem the rising waters across the country. CNN NewsPass VIDEO CNN's Jaime Florcruz reports on the flooding in China's cities and countryside.

Scores drown in Indian mountain floods
CHANDIGARH, India (AP) Rescue workers searched for bodies Wednesday after pouring rain and a flooded river submerged villages near India's mountainous border with Tibet, washing away 1,000 houses and drowning at least 90 people. Bodies of villagers were lying in mountain gorges, and rescuers were having difficulty due to the heavy rain in the area, 250 miles north of New Delhi. Thirty bridges were damaged in the flooding along a 180-mile stretch of the Sutlej River, said B.D. Sharma, press secretary to the top elected official of Himachal Pradesh state, where the submerged villages are located.

http://weathereye.kgan.com/cadet/flood/
Floods are the most common and widespread of all weather-related natural disasters. Most communities in the United States have experienced flooding after spring rains, heavy thunderstorms, or winter snow thaws. Floods have enough power to change the course of rivers and bury houses in mud. And flash floods are the most dangerous kind of floods, because they combine the destructive power of a flood with incredible speed and unpredictability. Learn more about the force of flash floods when you read through this lesson. About Floods explains the difference between an ordinary flood and a flash flood. Eight die in Siberia floods
MOSCOW, Russia Eight people have died in floods sweeping across Siberia, with dozens trapped, Reuters has reported. Campers and mushroom pickers are among those trapped in the region's forests, Reuters quoted the Interfax news agency as saying. Dozens of villages near Siberia's Lake Baikal have been evacuated, while three people have died in Buryatia province and five in the Irkutsk region, the agency said. It said 200 more people were thought to be trapped in the woods, unable to return from expeditions to gather mushrooms and berries. Television pictures in Russia have shown cars being swept away by raging floodwaters. An Emergencies Ministry spokeswoman in Moscow said water levels in rivers in the region were subsiding. She said 56 villages had been evacuated as of Wednesday morning. Eastern Siberia saw the worst floods in years earlier this year, with thousands left homeless, before airforce bombers were sent in to blast ice floes and unblock a river.

70. Flash Flood!
Find out more about the destructive power of floods and flash floods by visiting Each link goes to a web site about places that were hit by floods.
http://weathereye.kgan.com/cadet/flood/about.html
A flash flood is the fastest-moving type of flood. It happens when heavy rain collects in a stream or gully, turning the normally calm area into an instant rushing current. The quick change from calm to raging river is what catches people off guard, making flash floods very dangerous. Any flood involves water rising and overflowing its normal path. But a flash flood is a specific type of flood that appears and moves quickly across the land, with little warning that it's coming. Many things can cause a flash flood. Generally they are the result of heavy rainfall concentrated over one area. Most flash flooding is caused by slow-moving thunderstorms, thunderstorms that repeatedly move over the same area, or heavy rains from hurricanes and tropical storms. Dam failures can create the worst flash flood events. When a dam or levee breaks, a gigantic quantity of water is suddenly let loose downstream, destroying anything in its path. Flash flood waters move at very fast speeds. They have the power to move boulders, tear out trees, destroy buildings, and obliterate bridges. Walls of water can reach heights of 10 to 20 feet and generally carry a huge amount of debris with them.

Flooded areas of land usually start off as very dry land. Floods are caused by heavy rains that pour to much water into rivers and other waterways. Making these natural channels unable to carry all the water. Rising water flows over or breaks the banks to the waterways causing the surrounding land to be flooded. Different causes of floods can come from masses of snow melting of tidal waves.
Where do Floods occur?
The type of land that is prone to flooding are broad and flat usually situated on the banks of a river or main waterway. Rivers that flood are regarded in three different stages. They are:- ONE:- Water comes off the mountains, eroding the beds and banks of the river as it flows.
