Perry Table of Contents USGS Flood Measurements Significant Floods of the 20th Century Regional Floods Flash Floods ... Flood Facts During the 20th century, floods were the number-one natural disaster in the United States in terms of the number of lives lost and property damage. For more than 110 years the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has measured floods for the Nation's benefit while supplying additional streamflow data with its extensive stream-gaging network. Thirty-two of the most significant floods (in terms of number of lives lost and (or) property damage) in the United States during the 20th century are listed according to the various types of floods. Internet sites for acquiring near-real-time streamflow data and other pertinent flood information are provided. USGS Flood Measurements The USGS currently (2000) maintains more than 7,000 stream-gaging stations throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands that monitor streamflow and provide data to various Federal, State, and local cooperating agencies as well as the general public. Some of these stream-gaging stations have been in operation since before 1900, providing more than a century of water informaton for the Nation. In addition to providing critical information on flood heights and discharges, these stations provide data used in the effective management of water-supply and water-quality needs, protection of aquatic habitat, recreation, and water-resources research.

Many people remain missing after 10 days of record rainfall, making it likely that the death toll will rise. Relief work has been stepped up across the state. Air and road services have been restored. But millions of people, particularly in rural areas, still lack basic amenities and an overflowing dam poses a new flood threat in Mumbai (Bombay). In Mumbai the rains have eased and city officials claim that life in the city is returning to normal. "It [Mumbai] has got back to the state it was before the rains," Mumbai police commissioner AN Roy told the AFP news agency. "There are maybe [a] few complaints here and there. We are prepared to handle them," he said. Challenges ahead Some complain that aid has been slow to reach outlying areas The situation in many areas outside Mumbai, however, remains far from normal.

The city formerly known as Bombay was deluged with 37 inches (940 millimeters) of rain in 24 hours Tuesday the most any Indian city has ever received in one day. As the monsoon rains moved back in Sunday, Mumbai's airport was shut down for a while and flights were redirected to New Delhi. Parts of the rail network were also shut down, but some service had resumed by Sunday afternoon. In northern Mumbai, waters were rising steadily; in some parts of the city, water levels had already reached 7 feet. The local government has issued an advisory asking residents to stay inside.
