Air Quality Problems Caused by Floods
How Are Floodwaters an Indoor Air Quality Problem?
During a flood cleanup, the indoor air quality in your home may appear to be the least of your problems. However, failure to remove contaminated materials and to reduce moisture and humidity can present serious long-term health risks. Standing water and wet materials in the home can become a breeding ground for microorganisms: bacteria, mold, and viruses. They can cause disease, trigger allergic reactions, and continue to damage materials long after the flood.
What Are the Health Effects?
Standing water is a breeding ground for microorganisms, which can become airborne and then can be inhaled. When floodwaters contain sewage or decaying animal carcasses, infectious disease is of concern. Even if the water appears clean, microorganisms can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. For these health reasons, and also to lessen structural damage, all standing water should be removed as quickly as possible. Excess moisture in the home is an indoor air quality concern in several ways:
  • Microorganisms in floodwaters may present a health hazard. These organisms can penetrate deep into soaked, porous materials and later be released into air or water. Coming in contact with air or water that contains these organisms can cause illness.

Floodwaters threaten lives of children in Bangladesh
Children in both urban and rural areas struggle to find clean water DHAKA/NEW YORK, 28 July 2004 – Overflowing sewers mixing with floodwaters are putting the health of millions of children at risk in Bangladesh’s capital city of Dhaka. “In urban areas, poor areas, the situation for children is extremely dangerous. The water in the cities is filled with filth and the children who are playing and walking through the water are vulnerable. They are easy prey to infectious diseases,” said UNICEF Bangladesh Chief of Communications Naseem-Ur Rehman in a phone interview this morning. The sewer water is gushing out of manholes in many areas of the city, which has a population of more than 10 million people. Diseases like diarrhoea, watery dysentery, acute respiratory infection (ARI), jaundice, typhoid and scabies are being reported. Acute respiratory infection is one of the single largest killers of children annually in Bangladesh, said Mr. Rehman. The presence of the black, foul-smelling water suggests that the worst of the problem is yet to come. As the dank floodwater stagnates, children face an increasing risk of disease.

These images, taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) aboard ESA’s Mars Express spacecraft, show a large depression called Iani Chaos and the upper reaches of a large outflow channel called Ares Vallis.
Image strips were taken during three orbits from an altitude of 350 km, with a resolution of 15 metres per pixel. The strips have then been matched to a mosaic that covers an area from 342.5º East to 3º North. The Iani Chaos depression – 180 km long and 200 km wide – is connected to the beginning of Ares Vallis by a 100-km wide transition zone.
Iani Chaos and Ares Vallis in context From here, Ares Vallis continues its course for about 1400 km through the ancient Xanthe Terra highlands, bordered by valley flanks up to 2000 metres high. Eventually Ares Vallis empties into Chryse Planitia.

Mexican prisoners riot as floods reach jail
The deforested mountainside collapsed on the remote village of Acalama, killing all but 30 of the 150-200 residents, witnesses said Monday October 12, 1999

Web posted at: 7:44 PM EDT (2344 GMT)
VILLAHERMOSA, Mexico (Reuters) Mexican police fired tear gas and warning shots Tuesday at prisoners rioting after floodwaters overran their cells, just as officials said the worst of Mexico's flooding disaster was over. Convicts at the city jail in the Gulf of Mexico city of Villahermosa took positions on the prison's roof after water from the Carrizal river reached over five feet in some cells. "This is hell, we're up to our necks in water," read a note tied to a rock and flung from the roof by one inmate hoping to contact relatives. Villahermosa, the capital of oil-rich Tabasco state, was flooded after the Carrizal and Grijalva rivers jumped their banks following days of steady rain in the past week.

Floods, landslides ravage China
From CNN Correspondent Lisa Rose Weaver
Millions are working around the clock to build and monitor dikes. Story Tools RELATED Floods devastate China
BEIJING, China (CNN) Weeks of heavy rain have caused at least three landslides along with heavy flooding in central and eastern China. The landslides happened over the weekend in Tibet, Sichuan, and Hubei provinces, China's official Xinhua news agency said Monday. In eastern China, there was a break Monday in rising water levels on the upper reaches of the Huai River. Farther downstream, however, the levels remained high in the eastern province of Jiangsu and at Hongze Lake. Residents near the lake remained on high alert, trying to man the dikes to contain the river or divert the water to release pressure. About a million people have been evacuated in Anhui, Jiangsu, and Hunan provinces so that water can be diverted to farmland there in order to protect the cities. An estimated 1.5 million people were working shifts to monitor the dikes for signs of leakage.

Deadly floods hit South Asia
Thousands have been marooned by the floods that have hit Pakistan and India. ISLAMABAD, Pakistan More than 100 people have been killed by flash floods in northern Pakistan. Heavy rain has fallen across much of the region since Sunday, triggering floods and landslides. Hardest hit was Pakistan's northwest frontier province, where a small hillside village in Manshera district was swept away by floods. Sixty-two people were killed and more than 100 were injured. Officials said the village was washed away by the sudden flood and mudslides. Deaths were reported in several other areas, including the capital, Islamabad, which recorded its heaviest downpour in 100 years. The meteorological office in Islamabad recorded more that half a meter of rain (about 24 inches) on Monday alone. COUNTRY PROFILE At a glance: India Provided by CountryWatch.com

Hong Kong floods stretch emergency services
This village in the New Territories is submerged in flood water HONG KONG, China Firefighters used helicopters and dinghies to rescue 102 people stranded by floods during torrential rain in Hong Kong as 13 of those rescued were hospitalized. Workers in helicopters rescued nine people trapped on rooftops in a village in the northern suburbs. Firefighters saved dozens of people from many villages, and in some areas, the rescuers waded through chest-deep water to reach trapped people. The Hong Kong Observatory recorded 12 inches of rainfall in the worst-hit rural areas during a five-hour period Saturday. Hundreds of people were evacuated from flooded villages. "We're very afraid. We keep shouting for help. I've never seen my mother's house so seriously flooded," a woman told local TV. The pouring rain prompted the closure of schools Saturday and stranded many people away from home. Some found shelter in community centers, the government said.

Jökulhlaup Updates
November 5.
The jökulhlaup from Grímsvötn has just begun. The volume of the Skeiðará river is increasing rapidly this morning. A continuous high frequency tremor appeared on the station on Grímsfjall at 2130 hours last night. The tremor amplitude increased steadily throughout the night. It was 3-5 units at 2130 h increasing to 120 units at 700 h. 10 am UT The road across Skeiðarársandur has been closed. The jökulhlaup now surrounds the 900 m long bridge across Skeiðará which has reached a flow rate of 6000 cubic m/s within the first 2 hours. Icebergs are breaking off the glacier snout and are being carried down with the flow. The maximum tremor amplitude is around 160 units. 13 pm UT According to radio reports, the bridge across one of the glacier rivers (Gýgjukvísl) has now perished in the flood. The power-line is down and the telephone optical cables have been cut by the flood. The maximum tremor amplitude is around 240 units. 18 pm UT The bridge across Sæluhúsakvísl has been demolished by the flood and the longest bridge in Iceland, the 900 m long Skeiðará bridge is severely damaged as well, and not expected to last much longer. Glaciologists surveying the flood from an aircraft at 15 h estimated the flow rate to be around 25.000 m³/s. The maximum tremor is now 270 units. The Skeiðará bridge is worth 10 million US$. The total damage to constructions today is estimated at about 15 million US$.
