Indoor Biting Insects
Questions:
Minnesota Master Gardeners Say:
Spider bites are extremely rare in Minnesota, and some professionals say that they've never even been able to prove even one case of spiders biting humans.
Some of the possibilities of insects that bite indoors are fleas, bedbugs, and mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes are quite good at finding small holes in screens, and even though you might not see them biting, they could still be the culprits. Check any possible holes in screens or screen doors for even small holes that could let in mosquitoes.
Fleas can cause swollen, red bumps on just about any part of the human body, but they most commonly attack us on the legs. Some people react more than others to flea bites. You don't have to have a pet to have fleasthe previous renters could have had one, or the fleas could be brought in on shoes and clothing. One good test for fleas is simply to walk across a carpeted floor while wearing white socks. The dark-colored fleas will stand out against the white of the sock as they jump onto the socks. If you have fleas, it's best to start with flea collars on your pets, or bring them to the veterinarian for medication that will help kill any fleas that jump on them. Additionally, you'll need to take an integrated approach to managing these pests, eliminating them everywhere they live in your house. See these Extension sites for more information:

General Flea Information Fleas are small, brown or black, wingless insects with flattened bodies. Several types of fleas infest the haircoats of animals, and some may occasionally feed on people. These blood-sucking insects cause considerable irritation and distress to infested pets. Severe infestations may lead to anemia from blood loss. Fleas spread the common dog and cat tapeworm, and carry several viral and bacterial diseases. Flea bites also cause skin allergies, rashes and sores on both pets and their owners. The best places to look for fleas on your pet are the hindquarters, base of the tail, stomach and groin regions. Sometimes no fleas are found but only tiny, black granules that resemble black pepper. This material is flea feces and consists of digested blood ("flea dirt"). To distinguish this material from dirt, smudge it on white paper or add a drop of water to it. If you see a reddish-brown color, your pet has fleas, even if you can find none. After taking a blood meal, fleas drop off the animal and deposit their eggs in cracks, crevices and carpeting. A single breeding pair of fleas may produce 20,000 fleas in 3 months.

They are usually active from July to October, but can be a problem year-round if they take up residence indoors. Fleas can transmit diseases to humans and tapeworms to dogs and cats. They cause irritating bites on pets, domestic animals and people. Fleas are wingless, hard-bodied insects. Their flattened body allows them to move easily through hair. Understanding the life cycle of fleas helps with control. Control of flea problems involves treatment of the infested pet, the house and the yard. Flea collars do not effectively get rid of an existing infestation; however, they can help prevent infestation on pets. Fact Sheet 2081 gives information on biological and botanical products for control and explains the flea life cycle. Pest control professionals also can treat effectively for fleas.

An interesting book. Mostly it is an introduction to insect diversity and ecology for gardeners, but later chapters talk about some tricks for attracting insects. Much of the book is really trying to convince traditional gardeners that the presence of insects is not necessarily a bad thing. Guide for Controlling Insects on Pets
This guide is restricted to the most common insect pests of cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, and gerbils. John B. Campbell, Extension Entomologist, David L. Keith, Entomologist Previous Category Catalog Order Info
Pets, like all animals, are subject to attack by certain insects. Sanitation around the area where pets are kept, cleanliness of the pets, good care and nutrition all help reduce the chance of a serious problem.
    Fleas
Various species of fleas are the most common insects on pets, and may increase to high numbers in areas where pets are kept. Fleas spread throughout homes, animal quarters and yards. They attack pets, livestock, birds, and people. The dog flea, Ctenocephalides canis , the cat flea, C. felis , and sticktight flea, Echidnophaga gallinacea , the human flea, Pulex irritans , and other species may be found on pets. Most species are quite active and move through the hair rapidly when disturbed. The sticktight flea attaches permanently in less hairy areas, as around the eyes or ears. Description and Life Cycle: Fleas are about one-eighth inch long with a compressed body (narrowed laterally). They have no wings. Most are brown with legs well developed for jumping. The head is compressed (usually longer than high), rounded in front, and appears to be divided in two parts.

    • FEATURES: Parasites on warm-blooded vertebrates. Long legs. Hard, flattened (from side to side) bodies. 3-segmented antennae are concealed in grooves. Hind legs developed for jumping.
Families: - Pulicidae (Common Fleas) - Echidnophagidae (Sticktights or Chigoes) Stages: Generations Per Year: Multiple Over-winter as: Pupae or adults or any stage but they slow down in colder weather. Egg Stage: A few white eggs are laid at a time but the totall may be several hundred. Found in dust, dirt, bedding or on the host. Lasts 2 to 14 days. Larval Stage: Very slender whitish larva (4 to 6 mm) with a pale-brown head but without legs or eyes. Body is segmented and covered with very long hairs. This stage normally lasts 1 to 5 weeks, but larvae could take 7 months to develop, depending on conditions. Pupa Stage: Oval cocoon of white silk. Normally lasts from 5 days to 5 weeks, but pupae can remain dormant for 1 year.

Pets benefit us in many ways, but they are also a breeding site for uninvited fleas. Fleas thrive during our warm, muggy South Carolina summers. If you allow your pet access to both the house and the yard, you should be resigned to the fact that fleas will probably be a problem. Eradicating fleas from South Carolina is only wishful thinking, but flea control is possible. The secret lies in understanding the flea’s life cycle and using an integrated control program.
    LIFE CYCLE
Adult fleas are wingless, brown to black insects about inch long. Fleas mate on the pet, and both sexes bite. After each blood meal, the female usually lays four to eight eggs. Over her lifetime, a female may lay more than 400 eggs. Flea eggs are smooth, whitish and oval and readily fall from the pet to the floor or ground. Depending on temperature and humidity, flea eggs hatch in one to 10 days. Newly hatched fleas are minute, slender, whitish, wormlike larvae (immature forms). The larvae avoid light, burrowing into carpets, cracks or, if outdoors, soil. The larvae feed on small particles of animal or plant debris and adult flea feces until they achieve full growth. Larval development may require as little as five days but may be extended for up to three weeks, depending on food and environmental conditions. Next, the larvae spin silken cocoons. These are hard to see because fleas incorporate nearby debris into the cocoon. In the cocoon, the flea larva develops into a pupa (nonfeeding immature stage) and then an adult. The cocoon protects the developing flea from insecticides. Fleas can stay in the cocoon for periods ranging from less than a week to more than four months.

    Boric Acid
If a product can kill a cockroach it is probably not good for humans either. Many pesticides are extremely harmful to the human nervous system, so safer, non-toxic remedies are a wise choice.
Boric Acid, a white powder, is mined from the Mojave Desert in California and is nature's proven long-term treatment in eliminating Cockroaches, Palmetto bugs, Waterbugs, Ants, Silverfish, Carpenter Ants, and Termites.
This chemical has many interesting and useful characteristics. A few are discussed here such as use as an insecticide, a preservative, and a fire retardant.
The first use of borates as an insecticide was in 1922 when P.F. Harris invented the Roach Tablet. It evolved into many products including today’s “Roach Motel”.
By 1985 there were over 200 registered pesticides containing borates.
In 1955 framing lumber in New Foundland began being treated with borates to control an epidemic of termite destruction. Since then, none of the homes using borate treated wood has had any infestation of termites or wood decay.
In the 1970’s Europe and the US began studying borates for wood preserving properties. There was a huge lawsuit involving an US lumber company that put tropical hardwoods in over 1000 homes. The hardwood had beetles in the wood. The homes were treated with borates and the hardwood mills in South America began pre-treating their wood with borates. Since then there have been NO problems with beetles.

    McCloud Pest Facts:
    Facts About Fleas
    General Information:
There are over 1,000 types of fleas in the world. The most common flea you will encounter attacking people and a pet is the cat flea.
    Appearance:
Fleas are small, wingless insects, which are dark in color and have strong legs that enable them to swiftly jump long distances. People often first become aware of flea infestations due to itching and annoying flea bites rather than usually spotting the pest. Bites most commonly occur in the ankles and may consist of 2-3 bites in a row. Dogs that are being attacked by fleas may suddenly stop and scratch excessively or bite affected areas. In severe cases, the dog may experience hair loss or skin infections.
    Flea Development:
Fleas go through three stages before they become adults (egg, larva, and pupa). It can take from 30 days to one year to complete this cycle. The immature stages are most commonly found in areas where the host animal rests and visits frequently. Although eggs are laid on the animal, they fall off and land on surfaces like carpets, furniture, pet bedding, etc. Larvae emerge from the eggs and feed on organic debris and adult flea feces in the carpet or other surfaces. The adult flea is the only stage routinely found on the animal. Adult fleas will live 7-10 days. The average female flea will lay 150 eggs in that time span.

Do your own pest control! Control fleas with effective professional products.
    http://www.e-bug.net/pests/fleas.shtml
Flea Control Prevention is the key to flea control both inside and outside. On the inside it is very inexpensive and safe to use an insect growth regulator that prevents flea eggs and larvae from becoming adults. The best IGR (insect growth regulator) on the market is IG Regulator . One ounce of IG Regulator makes one gallon, is safe to spray on all carpets and furniture and lasts up to 6 months. Because it is an insect hormone, it has no effect on other animals such as mammals, reptiles or birds. Two sprayings a year with IG Regulator will prevent a flea infestation from ever starting inside your house. If you already have an infestation of fleas, then you must use an adulticide to kill adult fleas in the house, in the yard and on the pet. Precor 2000 Plus is a hand held fogger that contains both an adult flea killer and an IGR. Precor 2000 Plus is an excellent product to eliminate the fleas from a house. It is very safe and easy to use. One can will cover about 1,500 sq. ft. If you want to use a concentrate then we recommend Suspend . This a very safe and effective synthetic pyrethroid that is labeled for complete coverage of the carpet.
    Inside Flea Control
  • A thorough cleaning of the house is your first order of business. This is a very important measure and should not be taken lightly. Start by taking all pet bedding and washing it in hot water or destroying it. Next, vacuum all carpeting and mop all wood or tile floors. It is particularly important to clean well in areas where pets sleep or rest, under furniture, in cracks and crevices and along walls. Don't forget closets too. And remember, you can't always see fleas - particularly eggs and larvae - so be thorough.
