Fleas Fleas are blood-sucking insects. Only the adults are injurious. Adult fleas are small, wingless insects with laterally compressed bodies. They are dark brown or reddish brown insects. Their size ranges from 1-4mm long. Their stout hind legs are well adapted for jumping from one host to another, reaching maximum distances of 20cm (vertically) and 41 cm (horizontally). They feed preferentially animal blood but will bite humans as well. Females will deposit their eggs on floor rugs, etc. A female flea can produce 25 eggs per day and up to 800 per lifetime. The eggs are tiny, usually going unnoticed. Once they hatch (larval stage), they feed on dry organic matter such as adult droppings, old skins, scales or hair. They are small, hairy, wormlike larvae that are whitish with brownish heads. They start off at about 1.5mm and grow to about 5mm long. During this developmental stage they avoid light and are sensitive to climatic changes. When mature, the larvae spin cocoons and mature into the adult stage.

God in his wisdom made the fly
And then forgot to tell us why
Ogden Nash Nash's witticism could easily be applied to all the critters that bug pets and people during summer months The world is a wondrous place where hundreds of thousands of animals and plants interact to form the environment as we know it. Each creature has carved its own niche a place where it eats, reproduces, and survives to reproduce again, for such is the nature of things. Man has chosen certain animals and plants to enhance his own niche, but some unwanted critters have come along for the ride, critters that could be more prevalent in any "spring of the swampy backyard." Moisture and heat are the prime ingredients for burgeoning populations of fleas, flies, mosquitoes, and other pests that bug Bowser by biting, stinging, and spreading disease. These critters can easily be divided into two groups those that seek Bowser for a blood meal and those that bite or sting as a defensive mechanism. The former group includes fleas, flies, ticks, and mosquitoes; the latter includes wasps, bees, ants, spiders, and centipedes.

Fleas and Their Control Background Historically, fleas are an important pest. It was the flea that transmitted the disease organism that caused "The Plague" a few centuries back. Fleas are still capable of carrying a number of disease organisms, but outbreaks in the US are limited. For most of us, flea bites to both people and their pets cause skin irritation. But the cost and inconvenience of eliminating a flea infestation can be great. Transportation of fleas into the home occurs due to this insect's ability to hop onto a host. Fleas dwelling outdoors may survive under shrubs near buildings, hopping off one host such as a dog, cat or person and then hopping onto a new one. In cases where there are no pets, it has been shown that fleas may come in with other "uninvited" animals such as mice, rats, squirrels or raccoons. Fleas are uniquely designed. Viewed from the side, they seem to have much of the substance the photos above show. When viewed from above, below or from the front or back, these insects are almost as thin as paper. This slender shape permits fleas to easily navigate through the hairs of animals.

Cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) are frequently encountered in homes and are common pests on domestic cats and dogs. Dog fleas (Ctenocephalides canis) look like cat fleas, but are rare in California. Sticktight fleas (Echidnophaga gallinacea) can become a problem when pets frequent areas near poultry. Female sticktight fleas firmly attach themselves around the ears and eyes of their host. Fleas on either cats or dogs in California are most likely cat fleas.
    IDENTIFICATION
Adult fleas are very small insects (up to 1/8 inch), so it is difficult to see a number of the characteristics used to describe them. These reddish brown to black, wingless insects are compressed from side to side so that they look like they are walking "on edge." They have piercing-sucking mouthparts through which they obtain blood meals from their hosts. Flea

This smallest stage of the flea's life cycle is seldom seen, due to its small size. These tiny eggs are well distributed by the host of the flea (dogs, cats, nesting animals) and should be considered in any flea control program. Knowing flea egg development will give you a better understanding of the pest and aid in flea control and flea prevention The species most encountered by pest management professionals is the Cat Flea, Ctenocephalides canis and the majority of the information listed here will pertain to the Cat Flea. Do not let the name of the pest mislead you. C. canis prefers the temperature of a cat's blood but will feed on the blood host of most warm blooded nesting animals found in and around homes in the United States. Specially designed electronic flea traps have a heat source that emits energy in a manner that confuses adult fleas. Most fleas in the general vicinity (an area up to eight feet surrounding the trap) will move towards the trap, mistaking it for a cat or other similar warm blooded animal. A flea trap is often used in combination with Flea Stoppers , a product that quickly dries out any flea eggs in the treated area. Flea eggs and larvae are dried out and killed by the products

    Fleas
Fleas are small, wingless insects that feed on the blood of animals and people. Americans spend about $9 billion a year controlling fleas, which makes flea control one of the biggest expenses for pet owners. In Arizona, most flea problems are caused by the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis . This flea feeds on cats, dogs and wildlife. Cat fleas do not normally live on humans, but do bite people who handle infested animals. Flea bites cause small, red, itchy bumps, usually on the ankles and lower legs of humans. An integrated flea control program includes good sanitation and treatment of the pet and environment. You can eliminate fleas from your home with proper treatment, but it may take time, especially if the infestation is heavy.
    Sanitation
Change pet bedding regularly and vacuum thoroughly. Vacuuming removes up to 30 percent of the larvae and up to 60 percent of flea eggs from a carpet, as well as the larvae's food supply of dried blood. Vacuum under furniture, cushions, chairs, beds, and along walls. Discard vacuum cleaner bags at least once a week. Fleas can continue to develop inside vacuum cleaner bags and re-infest the house.
    Treating Pets
Your pet's first line of defense against fleas is a flea comb and a good bath. Soap acts as a gentle insecticide and helps control light infestations on your pet. Though time consuming, combing helps reduce the need for insecticides. Flea combs have fine teeth that remove adult fleas from fur. Most dogs and cats seem to enjoy this treatment; pay special attention to the face and neck, and the area in front of the tail. Dip the comb frequently in soapy water to kill fleas removed from the pet.

    Flea Control on Pets

Introduction It is a common fallacy that all cats and dogs have fleas. Most of these animals can be kept free of fleas if basic hygienic practices are followed. Fleas are a common pest of many types of animals, including humans. While cats and dogs are the primary hosts of fleas in and around the home, humans can often become secondary hosts in the absence of domestic pets. A female flea can lay 25 eggs per day, producing approximately 800 eggs in its life. Although fleas usually feed several times a day on animals, they can survive several weeks without a meal. Adult fleas usually leave the host after feeding; however, flea eggs, larvae or pupae may be found on pets. The peak season for flea infestations outdoors in most parts of Canada is from early August to early October. In excessively dry, hot summers flea populations tend to decrease; fleas are unable to retain moisture and they dehydrate and die. Only female fleas bite. The bites cause the formation of a small, hard, red, itchy spot on the skin. When the flea pierces the skin with its mouthparts, it injects a salivary secretion to prevent its host’s blood from clotting. The itchiness is due to a reaction of the body’s immune system to substances in the salivary secretions. Reactions are specific to each individual; some may be more affected than others. To relieve the itchiness, apply ice cubes or calamine lotion to the bite.

    FOR MORE INFORMATION
New products are making flea control easier and safer than ever. However, to be most effective, a careful plan of attack should include rigorous sanitation, pet treatment, premise treatment and follow-up. IDENTIFICATION
Fleas are easy to identify. Look for small (1/8 inch-long), wingless insects in the fur of dogs and cats. Adult fleas are brown to black in color, with strong jumping legs. Adult cat fleas feed on dogs, cats, and a variety of furred animals. People may be bitten by fleas, especially when populations are high, but fleas will not live and reproduce on humans. CONTROL
Flea control is best achieved through a four step process. Good sanitation, pet treatment, premise treatment and follow-up are all critical to good flea control.
Sanitation Frequent vacuuming and disrupting of flea breeding sites can help greatly in indoor flea control. Fleas lay eggs while on the pet. Eggs then drop off the animal into carpet, bedding, furniture, or onto the floor. After a few days the eggs hatch into very small, legless larvae. Partly digested blood that flakes continuously from a flea-infested pet is the main food source for larvae.

Feline flea control The most common flea found on cats and dogs is the cat flea ( Ctenocephalides felis). Occasionally, rabbit and hedgehog fleas may be found on cats. Using modern treatments it is now possible virtually to eliminate fleas on cats. Why control fleas? While many cats live with fleas and show minimal signs of infestation, control is advisable because:
    • The cat flea carries the larval stage of the tapeworm Dipylidium caninum. Cats can be infested with these worms by eating fleas during grooming. Fleas have the potential to transmit other infectious agents. Adult fleas feed on cats' blood and in young kittens this can cause anaemia. Anaemic kittens are weak. Some dogs and cats develop an allergy to flea bites which causes them to scratch excessively or to develop skin disease.
