MEET THE PEST
The cat flea is the most common species of flea known to affect cats, dogs and humans. The very small, dark, wingless insect uses its sharp piercing-sucking mouth part to take blood from its host - preferably a cat. This predator hides in the fur of animals, but makes use of its long legs to jump to other hosts. Hungry fleas will attack humans in the absence of the pet. Fleas can carry and transmit various allergies and disease. These can be passed to humans and other animals when the fleas bite. Humans will usually experience two or three bites on the ankles and lower part of the legs by each flea. Each bite produces a small, hard, red spot with a noticeable puncture wound. In late summer when the temperature and humidity rise, flea populations usually reach their peak. These conditions are necessary for adult development. Fleas which bite rodents pose a real threat if they later bite humans and transmit diseases picked up from the rodents. Fleas seem to be attracted to some people more than others. One reason for this selective attraction could be that not everyone has the same chemical makeup. Skin secretions and gas emissions such as carbon dioxide vary among individuals. Also, some people are allergic to the saliva secreted by fleas. A person with a moderate or severe allergic reaction would notice more bites than a person who is not allergic.

Description More Information A natural insect repellent spray for dogs and cats that relies on Neem Oil, Lemongrass, Catnip, Citronella, and other essential oils to keep away fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, flies, and other insects. It contains no DEET or other pesticides. It is safe for dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, and their humans. For best results, use in combination with Only Natural Pet Insect Repellent Shampoo. Many flea and tick products rely on a family of chemicals called organophosphates that destroy the insects' nervous systems. Highly toxic and powerful, these chemicals can cause damage to to pets and the people who handle them. Only Natural Pet Flea and Insect Repellent Spray takes an alternative, healthy approach to flea, tick, and insect control. Using natural ingredients like soybean oil, neem, lemongrass, catnip, grapefruit seed extract, and other essential oils, you simply spray it on your dog or cat as needed. Fleas hate the clean earthy scent - and will stay away. 8 oz. bottle.

Fleas And Ticks On Your Cat Dog Or Ferret
Ron Hines DVM PhD 12/17/03 Fleas are common on dogs and cats. Fleas depend on the right environmental conditions to parasitize dogs and cats. Fleas on dogs and cats have a simple life cycle. The eggs of fleas of dogs and cats are very resistant to dying. Fleas on dogs and cats are best controled with some of the newer insecticides such as Advantage. Fleas on dogs and cats cause severe itching. Much of the skin disease we see in dogs and cats is secondary to flea infestation. Fleas on dogs and cats readily tranfer from pet to pet. Fleas on dogs and cats will sometimes attack humans. Fleas on dogs and cats multiply when the floor is covered with carpets or pervious materials. Fleas on dogs and cats have a life cycle of several weeks in warm weather.
Introduction
Flea Biology
A rather unique characteristic of fleas is that a large portion of them will remain dormant in their cocoons until vibrations, body warmth, and carbon dioxide emanating from pets or people cause them to hatch. This is why new occupants of apartments that appear free of fleas can suddenly be attacked by hoards of these parasites a day or two later. Adult fleas in this resting stage can live for up to one year. Once they have left their cocoons they can only survive about a week without feeding on a pet.
Fleas encountered in the United States are the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, the dog flea, Ctenocephalides canis, the northern rat flea, Nosopsyllus fasciatus, the oriental rat flea, Xenopsylla cheopis, the human flea, Pulex irritans and the rabbit flea, Cediopsylla simplex. Of these, the cat flea is the most common and does not confine itself to cats. These fleas are the carrier of the most common tapeworm of dogs and cats, Dipylidium caninum. I have read that this tapeworm can infest people if they should accidentally consume a flea but I have never encountered this.

    Identification
Adult Cat Flea Larva and Egg
    Life Cycle and Habits
Larvae are blind, avoid light, pass through three larval instars and take a week to several months to develop. Their food consists of digested blood from adult flea feces, dead skin, hair, feathers, and other organic debris. (Larvae do not suck blood.) Pupa mature to adulthood within a silken cocoon woven by the larva to which pet hair, carpet fiber, dust, grass cuttings, and other debris adheres. In about five to fourteen days, adult fleas emerge or may remain resting in the cocoon until the detection of vibration (pet and people movement), pressure (host animal lying down on them), heat, noise, or carbon dioxide (meaning a potential blood source is near). Most fleas overwinter in the larval or pupal stage with survival and growth best during warm, moist winters and spring. Adult fleas cannot survive or lay eggs without a blood meal, but may live from two months to one year without feeding. There is often a desperate need for flea control after a family has returned from a long vacation. The house has been empty with no cat or dog around for fleas to feed on. When the family and pets are gone, flea eggs hatch and larvae pupate. The adult fleas fully developed inside the pupal cocoon remains in a kind of "limbo" for a long time until a blood source is near. The family returning from vacation is immediately attacked by waiting hungry hordes of fleas. (In just 30 days, 10 female fleas under ideal conditions can multiply to over a quarter million different life stages.)

Proturans are minute whitish creatures that range from half a millimeter to one and a half millimeters in length. Their head is conical and lack antennae and eyes. Their mouthparts, which do not bite, are used to scrape off food particles which are digested when mixed with saliva. The larvae begin with 9 segments and acquire one after each molt until they are an adult with 12 segments. The first three segments have styli which are bristlelike, and the first segment has legs which are held up like antennae and act as sensors. These creatures are also called hexapods and reside in moist environments such as soil, humus, and bark. Their diet consists of decomposing organic matter and fungal spores. Links:

But many of us are just scratching the surface when it comes to choosing and using the proper flea and tick protection for our pets. Fleas, ticks and mosquitoes are a nuisance to our pets, and potentially dangerous. If left untreated they pose serious health risks for pets and their owners, such as heartworm, tapeworm and Lyme disease. Dogs in particular are also susceptible to severe skin allergies as well as West Nile Virus, an emerging hazard that is transmitted by some mosquitoes. The best defense against fleas, ticks and mosquitoes is a combination of an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) with a substance that kills adult insects.

    Itchy or Painful Insect Bites
What insects cause itchy or painful bites?
Bites of mosquitoes, chiggers (harvest mites), fleas, and bedbugs usually cause itchy, red bumps. The size of the swelling can vary from a dot to a centimeter (half inch). The larger size does not mean that your child is allergic to the insect bite. Mosquito bites near the eye usually cause massive swelling for 2 days. Clues that a bite is a mosquito bite are itchiness, a central raised dot in the swelling, presence of the bite on a surface not covered by clothing, summertime, and the child's being an infant (because an infant can't protect himself). Some mosquito bites in sensitive children form hard lumps that last for months. In contrast to mosquitoes, fleas and bedbugs don't fly; therefore, they crawl under clothing to nibble. Flea bites often turn into little blisters in young children. Bites of horseflies, deerflies, gnats, fire ants, harvester ants, blister beetles, and centipedes usually cause a painful, red bump. Within a few hours, fire ant bites change to blisters or pimples.

Fleas FAQ Contact LifeTips If you have questions Ask a Question Now! Today's Featured Fleas Tips Tip: Bombs and Foggers I am not a fan of bombs and foggers. They seldom do a decent job of ridding the house of fleas for a variety of reasons. They go up in the air and land on things, such as clothing and bedding, but do not get under the bed or in the back of the closet, and this is where most fleas proliferate. In addition, most people try to economize and share one bomb with more space than it is intended to cover. A far better solution is a product like Demize . It gets all FOUR stages of the flea (bombs and foggers do not stop the pupa stage), and it is sprayed on the ground, where fleas, eggs, larvae and pupae are. It takes about 10 seconds in a 10 X 10 room, close the door and go to the next room. Leave the house for two hours to let it do its job. Air it out and the problem in the house is solved for 7 months at a time. You can get even more information by clicking here Tell them Francie sent you from LifeTips.com

    RIDDING YOUR HOME OF FLEAS
by Mike Potter, Extension Entomologist University of Kentucky College of Agriculture
Ridding a home of fleas can be a frustrating and costly endeavor. Unlike some pests encountered around the home, fleas cause discomfort and irritation to both pets and people. Fleas account for more than half of all dermatological conditions requiring veterinary assistance, and even a single flea bite to a hypersensitive animal or person may cause intense itching and irritation. For successful flea control, the home, pet and oftentimes, the yard must be treated. Yet the manner in which these treatments are performed can greatly influence the results. The following information will help frustrated pet owners effectively rid their homes and pets of fleas.
    Essential Facts About Fleas
(the biting stage seen by pet owners) spend most of their time on the animal, not in the carpet. This is why treatment of the pet in conjunction with the pet's environment is an essential step in ridding a home of fleas. Adult fleas lay all of their eggs (up to 50 per day) on the pet. However, the eggs soon fall off the animal into carpeting, beneath the cushions of furniture, and wherever else the pet rests, sleeps or spends most of its time. This is where homeowners should focus control measures.

It's a natural reaction to be frightened of some insects. Many insects have the ability to harm people, and many insects look very menacing. However, many large insects are not harmful at all. Because it would take several volumes to describe every insect, this publication is intended to distinguish several common insects and insect relatives in Kentucky that are or are not harmful.
Insects and relatives which are NOT harmful:
UK Dept. of Entomology Daddy-long-legs look like long-legged spiders but are actually relatives of spiders. They only have one body section (spiders have two body sections). They do not sting or have venom. Daddy-long-legs feed on plants and sometimes decaying materials in forests. Millipedes cannot hurt people. They do look similar to centipedes (their sometimes dangerous relatives), but with two big differences:
    • millipedes have chewing mouthparts
    • millipedes have two pairs of legs for each body segment (centipedes have only one pair of legs per segment).
