Introduction Life Cycle Insecticides Organophosphates ... Flea Control Introduction: Fleas are external, blood-sucking parasites of dogs (and other canids ), cats (and other felids ), pigs, rodents, rabbits, people, birds. Ctenocephalides species infest dogs and cats, naturally, but can also jump on and bite other animals and people. Adult fleas bite the host animal, sucking blood and sometimes, transmitting diseases and/or other parasites (e.g. plague, cat scratch fever, peliosis (both from Bartonella henselae ), human and cat/dog tapeworms, other worms, blood parasites ( Hemobartonella felis ). Bites are painful, cause local itching, produce intense discomfort and at times secondary infection (due to excessive self trauma from scratching) , especially in animals particularly sensitive (allergic) to flea saliva. Additionally, infestation of very young, small animals can result in severe anemia (from blood sucking)...and even death. The cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis , is believed to transmit the blood pathogen, Hemobartonella to cats.

    Detection
Adult fleas spend almost all of their time on an animal's body. Look for tiny, white, worm-like flea larvae on the floor, in rugs, in cracks and crevices, and anywhere pets rest or sleep. They feed on dried blood excreted by adults. In order to know when to begin and end your flea-control efforts, use a specially manufactured flea comb on your pet to keep track of the flea population.

    Inside Your Home
    • Comb your pet with a metal flea comb, available at pet stores. Focus around the neck and base of the tail. Keep a wide container of soapy water nearby to drown captured fleas.

    MEET THE PEST
The cat flea is the most common species of flea known to affect cats, dogs and humans. The very small, dark, wingless insect uses its sharp piercing-sucking mouth part to take blood from its host - preferably a cat. This predator hides in the fur of animals, but makes use of its long legs to jump to other hosts. Hungry fleas will attack humans in the absence of the pet. Fleas can carry and transmit various allergies and disease. These can be passed to humans and other animals when the fleas bite. Humans will usually experience two or three bites on the ankles and lower part of the legs by each flea. Each bite produces a small, hard, red spot with a noticeable puncture wound. In late summer when the temperature and humidity rise, flea populations usually reach their peak. These conditions are necessary for adult development. Fleas which bite rodents pose a real threat if they later bite humans and transmit diseases picked up from the rodents.

    Fleas
P.G. Koehler and F. M. Oi External parasites are generally found on or in the skin and are important pests because they bite or annoy both humans and their pets. Fleas, mange mites, and ticks are the most frequently encountered and most troublesome pests that attack humans and their pets. Fleas are small (1/16"), dark, reddish-brown, wingless, blood-sucking insects. Their bodies are laterally compressed, (i.e., flattened side to side) permitting easy movement through the hairs on the host's body. Their legs are long and well adapted for jumping. The flea body is hard, polished, and covered with many hairs and short spines directed backward. The mouthparts of an adult flea are adapted for sucking blood from a host. Several species of fleas may be pests in Florida, and five kinds have been found on a single animal. The cat flea ( Figure 1 ) is the most frequently found flea, although the dog, human, and sticktight fleas are also found in Florida. Fleas may attack a wide variety of warm-blooded animals including dogs, humans, chickens, rabbits, squirrels, rats and mice. CREDITS: James Castner, University of Florida
