Sara Baras In 1994, during the Caja de Ávila Flamenco Week, she danced to accompany the singing of Enrique Morente. In the same year she made a two-month tour of several European countries with Paco Peña's Company. 1994 at the 23rd Festival of Andalusian Song and Dance in Jerez de la Frontera she shared a bill with great flamenco artists. Towards the end of the same year she set out on a tour of Asia, performing in Taipei, Seoul, etc. Sara Baras spent one year (1996-97) dancing alongside Antonio Canales as guest artist in his production entitled Gitano ("Gypsy"). This was presented at the Seville Biennale Festival In 1997 Sara Baras presented her own troupe to critical and public acclaim at the close of the 37th Cante de las Minas National Flamenco Festival. On April 2, 1998, with her own company made up of herself, seven dancers and seven musicians, Sara launched the show called Sensaciones. Sensaciones is not conventional theatre; it is an exploration of the various forms of flamenco.

FLAMENCO DANCE MANUEL MERIDA. From a professional point of view flamenco dance would become consolidated in the parties organized by the schools of dance of Seville, as well as in some typical places such as the Granada caves of Sacromonte. By the 191O's, flamenco becomes more and more present in the theater Performances by Pastora Imperio, "La Argentina", La "Argentinita", "La Nina de los Peines", "El Mochuelo", who offer their art in programs of other genres or at the end of movie programs or comedy plays. In the period of flamenco opera, the singing, the dance and the guitar inlay in comedies with a local or even flamenco essence. It is also in that period when "La Argentina" creates her company with Antonio "el de Bilbao" and with Faico, touring all over America, and making their debut in the New York Maxime Elliot's Theater in 1916, where they present the Enrique Granados' choreography of Goyescas. In 1915 Manuel de Falla composes for Pastora Imperio "El Amor Brujo" with a libreto by Gregorio Martinez Sierra. This work is the starting point of flamenco ballet, although the first company of Spanish Dance is created by La Argentina in 1929. Six years later, La Argentina puts together the first entirely flamenco ballet, with her version of "El Amor Brujo". Antonia Mercé was accompanied by Vicente Escudero, Pastora Imperio and Miguel Molina as the most outstanding artists of her show.

Flamenco culture originated in Andalusia Spain ), but has since become one of the icons of Spanish music and even Spanish culture in general. According to Blas Infante in his book "Orgenes de lo flamenco y secreto del cante jondo", Etymologically , the word Flamenco comes from the Arabic word Fellahmengu , "Peasant without Land". This is related to the huge amount of Ethnic Andalusians who decided to stay and mixing with the Gypsy newcomers instead abandoning their lands because their religious beliefs ( Moriscos ). After the Castilian conquest of Andalusia, the so-called Reconquista , most of the land was expropiated and given to warlords and mercenaries who had helped the Castilian kings enterprise against multicultural Al-Andalus . When the Castilians later ordered the expulsion or forceful conversion of the Andalusian Moriscos, they took refuge among the Gypsies becoming fellahmengu in order to avoid death, persecution or forced deportation. Posing as Gypsies they managed to return to their cultural practices and ceremonies including the singing.

Comments about Simon el Rubio's flamenco dance class: ....you are an excellent teacher. I'm very, very fussy about dance teachers...I no longer study ballet because there are no decent ballet teachers anywhere near where I live. You're a terrific teacher. I'm very grateful for having had the experience of studying with you. Ann Nowak (New York)
...we would like to thank you once again for your perfect Flamenco dance lessons which we enjoyed very much. We admired your high professionalism as a dancer and as a teacher, your very kind attitude and your particular attention to each of your students. It was a very interesting process to learn new dances, but also your lessons helped us to better understand the "soul" of Flamenco style.

Flamenco

Flamenco is a fundamental part of the culture of the south of Spain with its roots in the gypsy community. It is divided into cante ('the song'), baile ('the dance') and guitarra ('guitar'). The gypsies were nomads, believed to have their origin in northern India and they were accustomed to making their own version of local music. Music is, and always has been, an important part of their celebrations and their everyday life. The first document registering the arrival of gypsies in Spain is from 1447. During this time the Moors had been occupying the south of Spain for almost 800 years, during which science, economy and culture flourished in a rich mix. The Moorish influence from this time can be found in flamenco music, as well as the impact of Jewish, Catholic and local music. At the end of 15th Century the Moors were ousted by the Catholic Kings, and a persecution of all non-Catholics started that was to last for more than two centuries. The suffering and injustice during this time was expressed in the songs, and is still today noticeable in more serious forms of flamenco. Flamenco began to be used as a synonym for the Andalusian gypsy in the 18th Century.

OMAYRA AMAYA Omayra was in her mother's womb when her parents, Olga and Curro Amaya, were performing around the world with the company of one of the most famous Flamenco dancers, Carmen Amaya. Omayra was raised a gypsy and learned all the inexplicable subtleties of highly emotional art form of Flamenco has. Since the majority of Amaya gypsies were involved with the dance, Omayra was constantly exposed to singers, dancers and guitarist of Flamenco. She had a first class education in Flamenco dance form because her parents had been professional and her aunt, Carmen Amaya, has had great influence in her technique and style. After Carmen Amaya's death, Omayra's parents started their own company called "Curro Amaya y su Ballet," and traveled around the world once again. Omayra started performing with her parents at a very early age by crawling on stage while her parents were performing. As she got older, she was given parts in the company show. By twelve, Omayra started partnering with her father while her mother taught Flamenco in schools and universities. At fifteen, she started performing with other companies such as Rosario Glan, Antonio Santaella and others. She also performed abroad in Central America, South America and the United States. Not being satisfied with dancing only the traditional forms of Flamenco, Omayra realized she needed to enhance and expand her dance by exposing herself to the academic world of dance and music. So she began studying other forms of dance such as ballet and jazz. To fulfill her goal, Omayra applied for and accepted a scholarship to attend The Boston conservatory where she obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Dance and Choreography.

The dances of Spain are varied and rich in ethnic and regional traditions. Joy of Motion Dance center offers classes that give students the opportunity to study a full range of Flamenco and Spanish Dance. Fluid arms and percussive footwork are hallmarks of Flamenco dance that are paralleled in the beautiful melodies and intricate rhythms of Flamenco music. Originating in the Andalusia region of southern Spain, the fire of Flamenco dance is reflective of its gypsy (Gitano) dancing roots and influences from Arabic traditions. Learn traditional as well as original dances that are steeped in folklore and melding cultures dating back to the 1500’s in then Moorish Spain. Encompassing regional and folk dance as well as classical and neo-classical dance, Spanish Dance uses a wide variety of traditional music and features castanets. Castanets are handheld, percussive instruments that highlight and accent the intricate rhythms of the many dances they accompany. Classes that are listed solely as Flamenco will not include th study of castanets. Learn about Spain and it’s history through the exciting and challenging dances that represent it’s regions, people and culture.  Flamenco/Spanish Dance Levels of Instruction
Note: Students should discuss changing levels with the instructor. Repeating a level for more than one semester is common and many times required for the development of proper technique and artistry. Progress is dependent on the student’s commitment to class participation and home practice.
