Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. HOT ON THE HEELS of last year's salsa and merengue comes the feisty flamenco. "People want flamenco now more than ever," says Carolyn Berger, a Hollywood flamenco instructor. "It's flashier than Latin dances, and it's incredibly sensual." So sensual in fact that designers are taking Spanish-style ruffles and lace out of the studio and onto the runway. L.A.'s Eduardo Lucero styles a to-the-floor satin skirt edged with ruffles and a lingering train (pictured at right). In Los Angeles, says Lucero, "you can get away with all these things." Rozae Nichols, Tuleh, Yves Saint Laurent, and Valentino are also flaunting deep ruffles, layered lace, flaring, and fullness. The skirts are both feminine and forgivinga benefit appreciated, no doubt, by those who are causing a surge in sales at Fred Segal in Santa Monica.

Are you involved in Spanish Flamenco Dancing? Neither am I, but that's not the point. The point is that you could be. Skip to Thursday and see how. Wait, forget I said that. Don't skip to Thursday because you would miss Wednesday. And we all know you can't miss Wednesday. Well I guess you could skip it if you promise to backtrack when you're done.
Activities for Wednesday
Projects of Technological Transference from Europe to Latin America: The Nordenflicht Mission in the 18th Century: OK, let your brain take a breath. This presentation, which was supposed to occur at 3 p.m. in the Effingham Room of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union, has been canceled. This actually looked like it was going to be an interesting event, but apparently it's not going on anymore. I just wanted to give you the heads-up if you had planned on going. I know, you're welcome. Feel free to send me a thank-you card, gift certificate, television or car if you feel so inclined.

Flamenco, a vibrant mixture of dance, song and guitar is the heart and soul of Andalucía. Like the province, flamenco has evolved alongside the contrasting historic influences of Arabic, Jewish and Gypsie cultures. The Gypsies arrived from India in 1450 and have continued to be pivotal to the development of flamenco.
Today, throughout the world there is a demand for a modern, youthful, "flamenco fusion" a blend of flamenco and world music. Obviously, there are differences of opinion between the traditional (cante jondo) purists and the performers of modern flamenco.
This Web-page provides a guide to Tablao (flamenco clubs), schools of flamenco song and dance, plus manufacturers and retailers of suits and accessories. Hopefully, this will help widen your appreciation of the flameco scene.

Paso Flamenco
Paso Flamenco is a marriage of the Paso Doble and Flamenco dance styles. Paso Doble is a representation of a ‘Bullfight’, where traditionally the male dancer takes on the role of the Matador (the bullfighter) and the partner takes on the role of his cape.
Synonymous with Spanish culture, the Paso Doble is a traditional folk dance. The name ‘Paso Doble’ in Spanish means ‘two step’. The ‘two step’ refers to the marching nature of the steps, and the dance is recognisable by its dramatic poses that usually mirror the highlights in the music.
Also arising in Spain, Flamenco is believed to be a fusion of traditional folk forms and gypsy traditions.
In traditional Flamenco dance, the male holds his body straight, bending back slightly, arms curved, footwork is strong and the total effect is one which conveys dignity, manliness and passion. As for the women the arms are raised to form an elegant curve, and hands are frequently used to make beautiful circular movements. Finger snapping, clapping and stamping of the feet can also used.
Flamenco is flamboyant and dramatic and, for the most part, successful Flamenco performance depends upon the expression of inner passions and emotions of the performer.

FLAMENCO Flamenco is a genuine Spanish art, and to be more exact an genuine Southern Spanish art. It exists in three forms: Cante , the song, Baile , the dance, and Guitarra , guitar playing.
Gypsies are very often named as its fathers , and at least it can be taken for certain that they played an important part in its creation. But also the popular songs and dances of Andalusia have influenced early Flamenco considerably.
Certainly there were other influences, too, as it will not surprise in a country that has been dominated by most diverse cultures and civilizations during its different historical epochs. There were the legendary Tartessos , and seven centuries of Muslim occupation hardly could have passed without leaving traces. All that, directly or indirectly, influenced Flamenco.
The first time Flamenco is reported on in literature is in the "Cartas Marruecas" of Cadalso , in 1774. Its cradle most probably was where, between 1765 and 1860, the first Flamenco-schools were created: Cádiz, Jerez de la Frontera and Triana (Seville).
In this epoch Flamenco dance started to have its firm position in the ballrooms. Early Flamenco seems to have been purely vocal, accompanied only by rhythmical clapping of hands

world tour For the first time Spanish flamenco and Argentine tango, two of the most captivating dance forms in the world are brought together in a dramatic and passionate display. There is a natural if tenuous connection between flamenco and tango, since both are a way of life borne out of folklore and oppression. True tango is moody, mournful and improvised to bandoneon music that sobs to a halt, only to sweep you away again in sensual embrace. Flamenco , however, can just explode with the whole range of human emotion. Sometimes sad sometimes happy, it is a dance style that is by nature oriental. Drawing on the overlapping themes of both tango and flamenco, this dynamic company of dancers and musicans present an exhilarating show.

Flamenco is a genuine Spanish art form, or, to be more exact, a genuine Southern Spanish art. It exists in three forms: el cante, the song, el baile, the dance, and la guitarra, the guitar playing. Gypsies are often credited with the "invention" of flamenco, and it is at least certain that they played an important part in its creation. But the popular songs and dances of Andalusia also had a major influence on early Flamenco. First there were the legendary Tartessos, and later, nine centuries of Muslim occupation. Neither passed without leaving an imprint on Andalusian culture, and both influenced flamenco, directly and indirectly. The earliest mention of flamenco in literature is in Las Cartas Marreucas of Cadalso, in 1774. During its Golden Age (1869-1910), flamenco developed into its definitive form in the epoch´s numerous music cafés (cafés cantantes). Flamenco´s most intense form, cante jondo, expressing deep feelings, dates from this period. And in the cafés cantantes, the art of flamenco dance rose to new heights as the dancers became the major attraction.
