Recreational value Free-flowing rivers and lakes behind dams offer recreational opportunities. The types of recreational activities offered by lakes and rivers are different from one another, and therefore the removal of a dam will change the character of the recreational activities available. Members of your community may favor or oppose dam removal on the basis of the possible changes in recreational opportunities. Further, recreation-based businesses depend on the character of the recreational opportunities in the surrounding area. For the purposes of this module, recreation has been split into two different categories for consideration. The first category is recreation by community members, that is, a valuation of the recreational benefits that each option has for residents of your community. The second category is the economic benefit gained from tourists from outside the community. The valuation process for each of these is different.
Repair
Impoundments provide several pond and lake recreational activities. Many impoundments in Wisconsin offer excellent sport-fishing opportunities. The fisheries found in impoundments are generally warm- and cool- water fisheries supporting smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge, walleye, panfish, and many others. Impoundments also offer boating opportunities, such as motorboating, rowboating, sailing and flatwater canoeing and kayaking. Impoundments can be used for swimming and innertubing. Larger impoundments offer waterskiing, kneeboarding, and wakeboarding. Impoundments that freeze over in the winter provide opportunities for ice fishing, ice skating and hockey. Lakes may support waterfowl habitat, providing hunting opportunities.

October 31, 1996 Recreational activities finally becoming accessible to the disabled By GREG JOHNSTON
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER Rory Calhoun "lives to hunt," bags a deer every year and loves to camp and fish. Mary Sexton gets "excited about anything to do with physical recreation" and skates, hikes, rafts, sails, bicycles and skis. Calhoun, from Graham, is a paraplegic. Sexton, from Seattle, has cerebral palsy and suffers from systemic lupus, an auto-immune tissue disease similar to arthritis. Although their accomplishments are admirable, they are not amazing. What is amazing is that until not long ago, Calhoun, Sexton and millions of other Americans did not have a reasonable chance to take up these outdoor activities that most people take for granted. Studies indicate that between 12 and 20 percent of the American population perhaps 40 million people have some type of disability.

Recreational harbour operations and maintenance activities Background Recreational activities in marine SACs In many cases, recreational harbours are not in a class of their own, with recreational use merging with other harbour activities. For instance, Cowes Harbour accommodates marinas, ferries, commercial shipping, ship manufacturing and gravel quays. The Hamble, although predominantly recreational, also includes fishing boats and yards that maintain all sorts of crafts. In Portsmouth Harbour, recreation sits together with naval installations and commercial shipping and fishing activity (Quinn BMIF personal communication 1998). Different types of recreational activity occurring in a selection of marine SACs and an indication of the types of facilities and capacity of recreational harbours within them are shown in Table 4.

Limiting Impact of Recreation on Water Quality Shoreland Best Management Practices
Number 5 of 18 in the Series
What Are Shoreland BMPs?
Best Management Practices (BMPs) are actions you can take to reduce your impact on the environment. BMPs have been described for agriculture, forest management, and construction. This fact sheet describes BMPs you can adopt on your shoreland property to help protect and preserve water quality. In many cases, the best management for shorelands may be retaining the natural characteristics of your property.
Keeping Your Lake or River Healthy
Recreational activities can adversely affect both water quality and the shoreline, particularly when they focus on the waterfront. You can minimize these adverse impacts by developing and practicing a stewardship attitude as you enjoy your shoreland property and participate in outdoor activities. Recreational opportunities are a primary reason people choose to live by or visit Minnesota lakes and rivers, and the demand on our water resources is always increasing. That increasing demand also increases the potential for damage to water quality and shorelines. Assessing and improving leisure-time activities will help preserve water quality for fish and wildlife habitat as well as for our own recreational purposes. Poor water quality can affect recreation in and on the water, degrade fish and wildlife habitat, pose a health risk for water-contact recreation, and threaten the safety of your drinking water supply.

Hart Mtn NAR: Recreational Activities
These two activities are the most popular recreational activities on the refuge. Viewing wildlife in its native environment is a richly rewarding activity for the young and old. A few tips will help you see and enjoy refuge wildlife. Early morning and late evening is when wildlife are most active and easiest to spot, especially in the heat of the summer. Your car makes an excellent observation blind. Many types of wildlife can be approached more closely in a car than on foot. However, road access is very limited on the refuge, so hiking into more remote areas may also provide excellent opportunities to view animals, take-in the beautiful scenery, and experience the solitude and wildness of the refuge. Hike quietly to improve your odds of wildlife encounters. Binoculars or spotting scopes are very important for viewing wildlife across the great expanses of refuge habitat. HIKING Hiking is encouraged throughout the refuge, but

Lake Mead National Recreation Area - Activities Boating
Although Lake Mead and Lake Mohave are the prime attractions for visitors, both lakes often appear as empty as the desert. Sailboats, fishing boats, ski boats and houseboats all share the lakes' 290 square miles without crowding one another. On these spacious open waters opportunities for sight-seeing and other boating activities are varied. Boaters will find that they can see and reach many scenic areas that are inaccessible to those traveling by car. For example, boats can easily travel up the narrow, steep-walled gorge of Iceberg Canyon in Lake Mead or up the equally spectacular Black Canyon in Lake Mohave, which retains much of the character of the Colorado. Boaters can also investigate the numerous secluded coves formed by fingers of the desert jutting out into the water. Many of these coves are bordered by sandy beaches where you can picnic or camp. The beaches are particularly popular camping spots during the hotter months. For those who want hours of uninterrupted waterskiing, the lakes' wide basins are perfect, especially when winds are light. Sailboarders will prefer near-shore areas and stronger breezes.
