Introduction:
Three of Surfrider Foundation's guiding principles address this:
  • SURFRIDER recognizes that the biodiversity and ecological integrity of the planet's coasts are necessary and irreplaceable. SURFRIDER is committed to preserving natural living and non-living diversity and ecological integrity of the coastal environment.
  • SURFRIDER promotes the right of low-impact, free and open access to the world's waves and beaches for all people. SURFRIDER acts to preserve this right of access.
  • SURFRIDER believes environmental education is essential to the future health and well being of the planet. Those of us who frequent our coasts do so for different reasons, but we all value its importance and cherish our ability to enjoy it. The ability to surf, fish, dive, kayak and swim in healthy wild oceans is our coastal legacy and our birthright. However, growing demands on these sensitive coastal and ocean places threaten the health of our marine ecosystems and the fabric of our coastal legacy.
Marine Protected Areas are generally defined as any areas of the coast and ocean together with associated flora, fauna, historical and cultural features, which has been reserved by law or other effective means to protect part or the entire enclosed environment.

    Surfing
Rincon has long been known for some of the best surfing in the Caribbean. The regular surf season usually lasts from November thru March. This "winter" surf season is dependent on the low-pressure systems and cold fronts that come off the U.S. East Coast. There are the occasional surf swells during the late summer months of August thru October; these isolated swells come from the tropical weather patterns generated off the coast of Africa, during the peak of hurricane season. If you are interested in learning how to surf, there are lessons available with experienced surfers who also supply the boards. Surfboards and body boards can be rented from the local surf shops in town.
    Scuba Diving
    Snorkeling

The local dive operators also run trips for snorkelers. Desecheo and Mona also have excellent snorkeling. One of the best places to snorkel in Rincon is Steps Beach. A "proposed marine reserve" (not yet official), the area around Steps Beach is home to one of the best coral fringing reefs in the Caribbean, because it is home to the Elkhorn Coral (Arcopora palmata) which is highly threatened worldwide and on it's way to becoming an endangered species. When snorkeling in the area, please do not touch, bump, break, take or walk on the corals. Besides being harmful to the coral, you may get seriously cut and scraped up. Also, state and federal law prohibits the taking of corals.

A professional guide will lead participants to a pristine site for their fishing adventure and will take the mystery out of the art of fly-fishing. Both the novice and the advanced angler will enjoy the beauty and peacefulness that surrounds them in northern New Mexico. Painting in Santa Fe
For years artists have come to Northern New Mexico to work. Many say that it is the indescribably blue skies and incomparable lighting due to the high altitude. Whatever the reason, no one can deny the volume and quality of art produced in the Santa Fe area. A local artist will instruct your guests in the fine points of capturing the unique beauty of Santa Fe. Led by trained art therapists, even the beginner will not have a problem opening up to find the art that is within all of us.
    Rafting / Floating / Kayaking
One of America's most popular adventures, whitewater rafting is becoming a tradition for visitors to Northern New Mexico. The rafting season begins with the snowmelt in spring and generally lasts through October. All levels of rafters, from novice to expert will enjoy this adventure along the Rio Grande. Along the valley floor, the rafters will experience spectacular scenery, with a full range of whitewater on the "Racecourse" south of Taos. In addition, exciting river kayaking and calmer "float" trips are also available on the rivers, along with tours in sea kayaks on some of our local lakes.

People use braided rivers for fishing, camping, boating, kayaking, wildlife watching, and so on. The tourism industry in the Upper Waitaki Basin includes activities like fishing tours, home-stays, and eco-tourism. However, braided river birds are very vulnerable to disturbance by humans and their activities. For example, if riverbed birds are disturbed from their nests, eggs and chicks can be cooked by high temperatures or chilled in low temperatures, they can be run over, or be eaten by pet dogs and cats. Recreational users can minimise the risk to nesting birds by driving on marked tracks, learning about bird behaviours, responding appropriately to bird behaviour, keeping pets off riverbeds or dogs on a leash.

Manitoba's Recreational Fishing League is a non-profit group who's goal is to introduce youth to fishing through an organized league similar to hockey, baseball or other recreational activities. These young energetic people, supported by their local communities, will learn the skills of fishing and hopefully leave with a better understanding of the environment around them. Mission Statement ... To create an environment where participants can compete in a fair and enjoyable manner that promotes sportsmanship, fair play and education. Introduction ... Angling opportunities, and thus angling quality, is diverse in Manitoba. Therefore, it is important to develop a set of rules to govern competition that will place teams on an "equal playing field". That is, a team in Shilo will be competitive with a team from Swan River or Lac du Bonnet where anglers feel that fishing may be superior. The rules are also designed to encourage participation by young anglers at all skill levels. 2005 Manitoba Recreational Fishing League Final Results The 2005 season of the Manitoba Recreational Fishing League started May 23 and ended the week of June 27. The Ocala is a unique and fascinating forest that offers an accommodating climate for year round recreating. The mild winters are fine for family camping while a summer canoe trip down a palm-lined stream is a cool way to spend an August day. The temperatures for the dry months of November through February range from a daily average of 50 F to a high of 72 F. The summer season is much warmer and wetter. Short afternoon thundershowers often raise the humidity to about 90% while the temperatures range from 80 F to 95 F. The average rainfall is approximately 55 inches per year. Water plays an important part in a variety of recreational opportunities on the forest. There are huge springs, twisting streams and lakes for fishing and water skiing. Many of the scenic lakes were formed when limestone bedrock dissolved, permitting the surface layer to slump and fill with water. The cool crystal-clear water of Juniper Springs, Alexander Springs, Salt Springs and Silver Glen Springs entice many visitors to take a cool dip. Snorkelers frequently find a thrilling underwater view of fish, swaying vegetation and cavernous springs. No wonder the Ocala National Forest is one of the most heavily used National Forests in the United States. Some recreational activities require a pass or permit. Please see
