Recreational Fishing
09-94 Science Helps Sustain Great
Lakes Fisheries
Nearly destroyed by overexploitation, invasions of nonindigenous species and pollution in the first half of this century, the fisheries of the Great Lakes have undergone a remarkable rebirth. Today, the Great Lakes support world-class recreational fisheries that generate more than $4 billion in regional economic activity. Commercial fisheries generate another $270 million. Through coordinated research and direct interaction with state and federal management agencies over the past 25 years, the region's Sea Grant programs have contributed significantly toward sustained development of these fisheries. Thanks to the scientific data, techniques and new management tools provided by Sea Grant-funded research, Great Lakes fishery policies now are determined more by the lakes' biological capacity than by political and short-term economic pressures. As a microcosm of the global ocean, the Great Lakes offer a natural laboratory for developing and implementing science-based fisheries management and a model for improving the management of the nation's overexploited ocean fish stocks.
Lake Ontario Example
Like the other Great Lakes, the Lake Ontario sport fishery, valued at $100 million a year, is sustained largely by the stocking of Pacific salmon, which feed on unstable populations of forage fish that also consist mostly of nonindigenous species.

Australian fisheries production up in 2003-04
Australian fisheries production rose by 5 per cent in 2003-04 to around 267 000 tonnes according to the latest publication of Australian Fisheries Statistics 2004 released today by Dr Brian Fisher, Executive Director of ABARE. Individually the gross value of wild caught production dropped 10 per cent in 2003-04 to $1.49 billion from $1.65 billion in 2002-03 and aquaculture fell by less than 1 per cent to $732 million in 2003-04. Australian seafood imports continued to grow in 2003-04, with the volume of imports increasing by 14 per cent to 188 000 tonnes. However, the value of those imports fell by 5 per cent to $905 million, as world prices fell and the Australian dollar rose. In releasing the report, Dr Fisher acknowledged the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation for their assistance and input into the publication.

'Fish and Ecosystems Forever' Drive earns Japan Prize for CSIRO Scientist
Released: 18 December 2003
Photo: Chris Crerar An Australian scientist at the forefront of international efforts to conserve fisheries and marine ecosystems has won the highest accolade in the world for ecological research, the prestigious Japan Prize. Dr Keith Sainsbury, a CSIRO marine ecologist and mathematical modeller, joins an elite group of scientists to win the Japan Prize with his award. The award relates to food production based on sustainable ecosystems, a concept that Dr Sainsbury and colleagues has championed in both theoretical and practical ways for more than 20 years. "What this Award achieves is recognition that Australia has a great science base to guide fisheries sustainability and the integrated management of human impacts on marine ecosystems." "The Australian Government took the initiative in management of its own fisheries resources and is setting standards to ensure domestic sustainability while advocating the case at the United Nations for sustainable fisheries and biodiversity protection more generally and on the high seas. The marine ecosystems of the world are the last great frontier.
