"There are some who can live without wild things, and some who cannot."
-Aldo Leopold For over half a century, the Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation program has sought those who cannot live without wild things. The major provides students with the essential education to manage, conserve, and protect fish and wildlife, and the land and water environments on which they and we depend.
Such tasks demand people broadly trained in science, natural history, ecology, and policy. Your education then reaches beyond these traditional boundaries with applied conservation courses to prepare you for the demands of resource management issues. Beyond the technical and biological challenges, you must also be sensitive to issues of public policy and social values.
Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation is both science and art. It requires talent, personal commitment, enthusiasm, sound technical training, and special skills.
The program focuses on the study of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians that inhabit the terrestrial environment, and the freshwater, anadromous, and marine species that reside in aquatic environments.

The Department of Biological Sciences at Murray State University offers a four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in the area of fisheries or aquatic biology. This program is designed to provide students with solid foundations in biology, chemistry and applied mathematics, and advanced courses in fisheries biology or aquatic biology. Development of problem solving and communication skills, and an understanding of resource management are major objectives of the program. Students who successfully complete either option are well prepared to compete for state and federal jobs or for admission to graduate programs. Students graduating in the fisheries option meet certification requirements of the American Fisheries Society. Field Investigations are a major component of courses in fisheries and aquatic biology, and are conducted through use of the region's diverse aquatic habitats and the outstanding facilities available at the Hancock Biological Station on Kentucky Lake. Students have opportunities for individualized instruction, participation in research projects and for on-the-job experience through a variety of grant and contract research projects. Many of these projects have led to publications and to presentations at regional and national scientific meetings.

a fast way to achieve better results
IFL has long played an important role in training for the food processing industry in Iceland, especially in the fisheries and fish processing sector, for example, by holding courses, teaching at the Fish Processing School, writing articles, publishing, etc. In recent times, emphasis has especially been laid on holding courses for companies rather than offering general courses. The courses will thus become more purposeful, taking into account the circumstances in each individual company. IFL's specialists in various fields, most with extensive experience in the field of food research, teach the courses. Below is a list of some of the courses that IFL has offered over the last several years: A general course for employees in the fishmeal industry
Generally about fishmeal processing and management of the work process. Chemical measurements
Training in substance testing done during quality and production monitoring in fishmeal factories. Freezing of seafood products
Intended for those working in the freezing and storage of seafood products.

    Graduate Program
Our graduate school offers internationally recognized Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Resource and Environmental Management, as well as post-doctoral positions. Students can develop their expertise in fisheries science and management through graduate courses and a research project, but because of the interdisciplinary nature of our program, students also get broader training in related topics such as resource economics, simulation modelling and statistics, risk assessment and decision analysis, environmental contaminants, benefit-cost analysis, conflict resolution, co-management, and environmental law. Students can also choose other elective courses . Students and employers have found this interdisciplinary education quite valuable (see past students' comments on the REM program). While REM's Master's program involves many courses, the research project is expected to be as high quality as a standard Master's thesis in a single-discipline department. REM's Master's research projects are simply smaller in scope. Nevertheless, the local, national, and international awards given to REM graduate students in fisheries reflect the high quality of research that can be done in these research projects.
