Carlin Visiting Assistant Professor Carlin Conservation Genetics and Biogeography Telephone (509) 527-5391, E-mail: carlinjl@whitman.edu Originally from Indiana, Joel Carlin received his B.S. in marine biology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a M.S. in zoology from Louisiana State University, where he studied salamander evolution in the southeastern U.S. Joel then became a marine biologist for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources for three years, where he worked on stock identification in the newly developed wreckfish fishery. He then received a Ph.D. in fisheries from the University of Florida for his work on the systematics and population genetics of groupers, a diverse subfamily of commercially valuable tropical fishes. You can consult his curriculum vitae for details about his career. Dr. Carlin currently teaches Biol 111 Biological Principles (F'05); he will teach the majors' Marine Biology and non-majors' Fish and Fisheries courses in the spring of 2006. Previous Whitman classes include conservation biology, island biogeography, evolution, genetics, and introductory plant biology. Dr. Carlin taught genetics recitations for three years while a graduate student in Louisiana, and later taught conservation biology for the University of Florida honors program. Dr. Carlin has mentored undergraduate projects on an adaptive radiation of snails from African rift lakes, phylogenetic reconstruction of west African HIV strains, and speciation in tropical plants. There are about 20,000 species of bees under 19 families worldwide. In Bangladesh 18 species have so far been reported, of which 4 are honeybees.

Khmer Lao Thai Vietnamese ... Contents Assessment of Mekong Capture Fisheries Capture fisheries make by far the largest contribution to the Mekong's fisheries. Evaluating the size and value of the capture fisheries and recognising trends and patterns in the catch provide invaluable indications of the both the health of the river and its fish stocks. This is essential information in fisheries planning and development. Many of the component's activities in 2004 were the continuation of work initiated during 2003. Results from some of these were presented at the Asian Fisheries Forum in Penang (Dec 2004) and at an FAO-sponsored nutrition workshop in Bangkok. The main studies undertaken during the last year were: Catch monitoring: Fishers' catches were monitored basinwide in a trial to establish systems for detecting trends in the fishery. Over 100 fishers, using a wide range of gears, were included. The study also provided valuable field experience for agency staff and facilitated agency-fisher dialogue. This work will continue as a long-term monitoring exercise using the fishers who provided the best quality data in each country.
