Careers In Fisheries
Guidance notes prepared by
Dr Bruno Broughton, Fisheries Management Consultant Angling-Based Opportunities
There are virtually no full-time jobs in angling itself, although there are occasionally some openings in industries that depend on the sport. For example, there may be some employment opportunities because:-
  • Fishing tackle shops require staff to help serve customers Angling magazines need reporters and other staff Tackle manufacturers, wholesalers and importers recruit warehouse personnel, drivers, and other personnel Commercial fishery owners employ bailiffs (full and part-time) Fish farmers employ manual workers
The qualifications and qualities required would be somewhat different in each case, although it would be fair to say that in these areas of employment academic qualifications would not need to be particularly high. An extremely useful and increasingly popular means of developing a career based around angling is within the fields of fisheries and aquatics. Although several Universities offer academic qualifications in these and associated subject areas, vocational courses are delivered currently by just three colleges. The courses offered are at 1 st The colleges that offer fisheries courses are:-

Standards and Procedures for the Certification and Re-certification of FISH PATHOLOGISTS I. INTRODUCTION The Fish Health Section (FHS) provides a peer review system to identify professionals possessing the competence, training, and ethics required to effectively serve the aquatic animal health needs of fisheries programs and aquaculture. Individuals meeting the following requirements shall be eligible for certification by the FHS as "Fish Pathologists." The AFS/FHS certified Fish Pathologist is a professional who specializes in the causes, nature, and control of the diseases of non-mammalian aquatic animals, (hereinafter referred to as "fish.") Through a regimen of academic education, specialized training, and experience, the individual has developed a thorough understanding of the fish, its environment, infectious and non-infectious diseases, and the interrelationships involved. The Fish Pathologist is an individual in the fish health field who utilizes various disciplines including fisheries biology, water quality, microbiology, parasitology, toxicology, pharmacology, and histopathology to provide an accurate evaluation and diagnosis of fish health problems. When necessary, the Fish Pathologist is capable of seeking appropriate specialized assistance in determining the etiology of a health problem. If a definitive diagnosis is not possible, the Fish Pathologist must have the ability to utilize all available information to establish the most logical cause of the problem.

Fisheries at the University of Rhode Island The fisheries program at the University of Rhode Island, begun in the late 1960s and administered by the Department of Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences (FAVS), is one of the oldest fisheries programs in the northeastern United States. The Fisheries Program offers a degree program at the undergraduate level (B.S. in Aquaculture and Fisheries Technology) as well as opportunities to study at the graduate level in or M.S. in Fisheries and Aquaculture program or our Ph.D. program in Environmental Sciences with a fisheries emphasis. Students in our programs have come from throughout the United States and from many foreign countries. Faculty members in the program have research interests in fishing gear performance, bycatch reduction, fish population dynamics, multi-species fisheries management and marine sanctuaries, among many others.
Location
The University of Rhode Island is the state’s Land and Sea Grant University, with a main campus located in the southern part of Rhode Island in Kingston; the Narragansett Bay Campus, housing the Graduate School of Oceanography and Ocean Engineering laboratories is 10 km away on Narragansett Bay. Many fisheries research and outreach operations are based at East Farm, located about 1 km from the main campus in Kingston, and nearby Narragansett Bay and coastal lagoons provide excellent areas for fisheries research.

The concept of a "fisheries school" at the U.W. was heartily endorsed editorially by Pacific Fisherman. The journal announced in their June 1914 issue that the U.W. was to open a fisheries school that fall, with a 4-year program (Anonymous, 1914b). The journal credited Kincaid and Smith as the impetus behind the establishment of the School (Anonymous, 1914e). The local and national press gave a favorable reception to this concept (Anonymous, 1914f, g). The possibility of such a school was actively reported by the Pacific Fisherman in articles likely written by Cobb. In the October 1914 issue, the magazine announced the "first School of Fisheries in the United States." Rather than a "school" of fisheries, as previously reported, the magazine indicated that the course would for the present be taught in the Department of Zoology. The journal indicated that Kincaid had outlined a different program of study to embrace fisheries and that three students had already enrolled in these classes (Anonymous, 1914e). The U.W. course catalog for 1915-1916 listed courses in ichthyology and in pisciculture as offerings of the Department of Zoology. Ichthyology (Zool. 11, 12, for 2 credits each) was to be taught by Kincaid, and Smith was listed as the instructor for Pisciculture (Zool. 107, 108, 2 credits each). (44)

The authors and publishers made tradeoffs to make this a reasonably priced text. There is much information in the book for the price. On the other hand, one could argue that it is expensive for a paperback. Although there is an enormous number of photographs, their quality is equivalent to that of a good photocopy. The figures are well constructed; however, the figures and the printing in the text are gray. The authors have succeeded in writing a well-integrated wildlife and fisheries textbook. I recommend it for a lower division integrated course for majors. Although the book contains much technical material, it could be suitable for nonscience majors because of the clear writing. Because of the breadth of the book, it can also be useful in more advanced courses as a supplemental text.

Wildlife and Fisheries - History Synopsis (see end of page for full history document): South Dakota State College (SDSC) was founded in 1881. In 1899 the “old” Agricultural Building was constructed. That building would serve as the home of the Department from 1963 to 1993. In 1938 a course entitled Conservation of Natural Resources was first offered at SDSC. In 1939 Conservation and Management of Wildlife first appeared in the College catalog as a branch of study. The program was in the Department of Zoology and Entomology. In 1940 the Wildlife Conservation club organized and elected its first officers. The Club is still active and is now also a student chapter of The Wildlife Society. Tuition in 1940 was $24 per quarter; room and board was $78. The year 1941 marked the first three graduates from SDSC with undergraduate degrees in Wildlife Conservation. In 1942 the Wildlifer’s Log was first published. It originally had a holiday “Season’s Greetings” format. It has been published every year since then, except for the years of 1943 to 1946.

Healthy fare at Fisheries College
North Atlantic Fisheries College, in Shetland's ancient capital of Scalloway, is renowned for the quality of its fisheries courses and for its specialised facilities. Students from Shetland, the rest of the U.K. and from Europe know that they will receive industry-oriented training at the heart of the northern European fishing grounds. What they might not expect is that their college canteen appears in all the Shetland guidebooks. Da Haaf was established as the college cafeteria in 1993, but the quality of its food quickly began attracting members of the public. Each year it has grown in popularity and now, says manageress Isobel Christie, there's often more public eating than students. Da Haaf buys from the latest catch at the fish market each morning and the menu regularly includes red fish, witch fish (grilled on the bone), halibut, sea trout, megrim, monkfish tails, skate, lemon sole and Shetland salmon. Everything is home-made, from the batter on the fish, to the soup and the sweets. A participant in the Healthy Options Award, the restaurant offers eaters the choice of grilled or battered fish, boiled potatoes or chips, and a range of vegetables and salad. Vegetarian and nonfish dishes are also available at reasonable student-oriented prices.
