Large Pelagics Research Center
Human activities and climate change have impacted large pelagic species such as the tunas, marlins, sharks and sea turtles, yet their highly migratory habits and long lifespan have limited our ability to develop best management strategies. The UNH Large Pelagics Research Center is a center for excellence established through partnership between the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( NOAA ) through the National Marine Fisheries Service ( NMFS ). The Center is dedicated to addressing these limitations by developing the scientific information, technology and integrated approaches necessary to support the development of effective ecosystem-based management strategies for large pelagic species in the northwest Atlantic Ocean. The key elements of the Large Pelagics Center include the UNH Large Pelagics Research Lab , directed by lead scientist, Dr. Molly Lutcavage, a Competitive Grants Program in large pelagics research and two Education Initiatives . Organizationally, these efforts are closely coordinated with the Southeast and Northeast Centers of the National Marine Fisheries Service and guided by an

Several witnesses appeared before the committee and said that there would be duplication and that there would be a new structure. The government wants to duplicate even within its own bureaucracy. We are wondering how consistently this bill will be applied. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Department of the Environment are both involved in the protection of the environment. When I talk about duplication inside the federal government, I am referring to these two departments. How can we accept such a bill when several witness have told us there will be inconsistencies in the way it will be applied and in the management of marine conservation areas? A number of witnesses told us that this made no sense. Among those appearing before the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage was the vice-president of the Fisheries Council of Canada. The Fisheries Council of Canada is a trade association representing provincial fisheries associations in Atlantic Canada and Ontario. He told us:
If there's a need for legislation to establish marine conservation areas, it is our view that such legislation should be incorporated into the recently passed Oceans Act under the responsibility of the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and administered by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. It is simply inefficient—

Inertia is costing 8,000 EU fishermen their jobs every year. How many more jobs must we lose before we say 'enough is enough' and take the necessary measures to restore fish stocks to levels that will ensure the sustainability of our fisheries? The reform will deliver a smaller but more economically and socially viable sector while helping fishermen who leave fishing find alternative jobs", Franz Fischler, Commissioner for agriculture, rural development and fisheries, said in London today, where he was presenting the Commission's proposals for the reform of the CFP. Mr Fischler cited the example of the east coast of Canada, where the collapse of the cod stocks had deprived tens of thousands of fishermen of their jobs. He said that decision-makers could expect no thanks from those losing their livelihoods because they had failed to tough it out by taking the necessary measures before it was too late.

Speaking at a press conference the Commissioner said: "I am convinced that it is more socially responsible to do everything that can be done to reduce fishing of stocks that are under threat, even if this inevitably means a smaller fleet, than doing nothing but just watch fishermen lose their jobs for lack of fish to catch. "Cod stocks in the North Sea, west of Scotland and in the Irish Sea and hake in these areas and to the south of Ireland and eastern Channel, which are important to the UK fishing sector, are on the verge of collapse. We must urgently reduce the fishing effort applied to these and other overexploited stocks.

Point Reyes Light - August 15, 2002 A glut of king salmon keeps prices down By Ivan Gale His wish came true. Though it was a hard-fought battle, Fletcher was ultimately the victor. In the aftermath he explained the fish wasn’t going to get away, no matter what, as the young enthusiast said he was "too strong" to let the 44-pound salmon get away. Fish abound The seas have been so abundant with King salmon –a different variety than the stocks of Coho that spawn in West Marin watersheds– that "sport boats were coming in at nine in the morning with limits of fish," said fish and game marine biologist Mark Heisdorf. "The fish are just everywhere along the coast," Moore said. "This year a fleet could catch fish all over." Local "day boat" commercial fishing operations, headquartered in Drakes Bay or Bolinas, this season have caught, on good days, an average of 20 fish. One fisherman, on a good streak, brought in 170 salmon over a four-day stretch this summer. Economy of scale Prices embarassingly low Prices have rebounded slightly in the later summer months, current conditions are making the remaining active fishermen question whether the fishery holds a future for them. "The price is just embarrassingly low," said Churchman.

History of NYSFOLA
The New York State Federation of Lake Associations, Inc. (NYSFOLA) was founded in 1983 by a small consortium of lake associations concerned about a variety of problems facing their lakes. Water quality was of concern to nearly all of the lakes, and there was little information available on methods to combat the increasing presence of aquatic invasive species. With the assistance of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, NYSFOLA spearheaded the development of the Citizens Statewide Lake Assessment Program. This model statewide volunteer lake monitoring program has since served over 200 New York State lakes, and it remains an important part of NYSFOLA’s mission: “To protect the water resources of New York State by assisting local organizations and individuals through public dialogue, education, information exchange and collaborative efforts.”
