Fisheries Associations Appeal to Quell Disputes Presidents of fishery associations of China, the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and Japan have signed a proposal to solve fishing disputes and marine emergencies peacefully. The signing took place in Beijing on Thursday at a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the China Fisheries Association (CFA). Qi Jingfa, head of the China Fisheries Association, said the association had entered into agreements with South Korean and Japanese organizations to handle accidents and rifts through consultation and coordination. Nongovernmental organizations, rather than government departments, usually head efforts to end spats and skirmishes between the fleets that operate in the East China and Yellow seas, said Ma Weijun, an official with the Ministry of Agriculture's Fisheries Bureau. Over the past few years, the implementation of pacts between China and its neighbors, including South Korea, Japan and Vietnam, has prompted thousands of Chinese fishing boats to withdraw from traditional fishing grounds, according to the ministry.

Adopted by the FAO Ministerial Conference on Fisheries
Rome, 14-15 March 1995
On 14 and 15 March 1995 a Ministerial Meeting on fisheries was held in Rome at the invitation of the Director-General of FAO to review the state of world fisheries and the FAO follow-up to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The meeting unanimously adopted the Consensus on World Fisheries, which urged that governments and international organizations take prompt action to:
reduce fishing to sustainable levels in areas and on stocks currently heavily exploited or overfished; adopt policies, apply measures, and develop techniques to reduce by-catches, fish discards and post-harvest losses; review the capacity of fishing fleets in relation to sustainable yields of fishery resources and where necessary reduce these fleets; strengthen and support regional, sub-regional, and national fisheries organizations and arrangements for implementing conservation and management measures; keep under review the effectiveness of conservation and management measures for ensuring the long-term sustainability of fisheries and aquatic ecosystems;
