Saltwater Maintenance
The cycling process will undoubtedly be the most tense time for you and your new tank. So below is a guide to the first few days and months of your tank. Over the course of the first 4 to 6 weeks your tank will demonstrate the typical cycling process (which is described in detail the BEGINNER FAQ ). During this critical time, you should carefully watch the ammonia and nitrites in the tank. If the fish look stressed (darting around the tank, gasping for air, or not moving at all), a partial water change might be in order. If the fish look really bad, they may have to be moved to another tank or storage location until the toxicity of the tank is reduced. You should always keep salt mix and dechlorinated water on hand for impromptu water changes. Along with monitoring ammonia and nitrites, you should keep a careful eye on the pH (you should always watch the pH, not just during the cycling process). The pH will tend to fall over time and needs to raised. The easiest way to raise the pH is through additions of sodium bicarbonate (i.e., baking soda). Mix a tablespoon or so of baking soda in a cup of dechlorinated water and slowly add it to the tank. Slowly means over the course of an hour or two. Baking soda will cause a short term drop in the pH, but will bring the pH to 8.2 over time. As time marches on, water will evaporate from the tank and need to be replenished. The water that evaporates is freshwater and needs to be replaced with freshwater. You should never use saltwater for makeup water (unless you want to increase the salinity of the tank).

SALTWATER FISHING
PIER,SURF FISHING AND MORE
Hello, welcome to my home page. I hope you will find my site informative. I have dedicated my site to pier and surf fishing, because it is an easy way, and even more importantly, an inexpensive way to learn fishing. Don't think that pier and surf fishing is just for kids. It is true that kids can enjoy fishing for mackerel at the pier, but adults can also enjoy fishing for bigger fish like sharks. Most bay sharks come right up into the surf to eat crabs, small fish and so on. That gives pier and surf anglers an opportunity to hook up a big fish that will put up a good fight. Please keep in mind that this site was written by a Southern California angler, so the information here willl be based on his experience as a fisherman in Southern California. However some of the information here is general information (gear, tackle, etc..)will be informative and helpful to all anglers.
My pier fishing basics will contain information about Southern California piers, basic tackle and a seasonal fishing guide for Southern California.
Should you get bored with catching just small fish like mackerel and perch, go to my

Figure A Figure B Figure C Figure D Figure E If you're considering setting up a saltwater aquarium, be sure to prepare properly before you bring pet fish into your home. The proper setup will keep your fish healthy and extend their lives. Saltwater fish are generally easy to take care of if you set up your aquarium the right way. Careful preparation is the key to success. Begin preparing your saltwater aquarium, whether it's for cold-water or tropical fish, at least four weeks before adding fish. A 30-gallon tank is the minimum size for saltwater fish. Also consider that the aquarium will be very heavy (large ones weigh as much as a piano) and should be placed near a load-bearing wall in the house. After you clean your aquarium, using water and a clean cloth, begin adding gravel. Use aquarium gravel ( figure A ), which has active bacteria that help break down waste. Just pour the gravel into the tank and flatten it out.

Skip Maine state header navigation Agencies Online Services Web Policies ... Help State Search: Environmental Health Unit Home Well Water Fish and Game Guidelines Chemicals ... PRINT VERSION WARNING About Eating Saltwater Fish and Lobster Tomalley Warning: Chemicals in some Maine saltwater fish and lobster tomalley may harm people who eat them. Women who are or may become pregnant and children should carefully follow the Safe Eating Guidelines.
It's hard to believe that fish that looks, smells, and tastes fine may not be safe to eat. But the truth is that some saltwater fish have mercury, PCBs and Dioxins in them.
All these chemicals settle into the ocean from the air. PCBs and Dioxins also flow into the ocean through our rivers. These chemicals then build up in fish.
Small amounts of mercury can damage a brain starting to form or grow. That's why babies in the womb, nursing babies, and young children are at most risk. Mercury can also harm older children and adults, but it takes larger amounts.
PCBs and Dioxins can cause cancer and other health problems if too much builds up in your body. Since some saltwater fish contain several chemicals, we ask that all consumers of the following saltwater species follow the safe eating guidelines.
