The massive flooding that swept into Louisiana on the heels of Hurricane Katrina is a deadly illustration of how vulnerable we become when we remove or alter natural buffers such as wetlands and marshes. We must learn from this tragedy and work to ensure that protective habitats like wetlands remain healthy and plentiful for us and for the ocean's inhabitants. Hurricane Katrina is yet another reminder of the power of our ocean, our inability to control it, and our need to respect it. We extend our sincerest sympathy to those affected by this disaster and will keep them in our thoughts in the coming months of recovery and rebuilding. Roger T. Rufe

Students can learn exactly what marine biologists and oceanographers do, while teachers will find lesson plans to encourage interest in and respect for the ocean. The Smithsonian Institute’s interactive aquarium exhibit makes an ideal place to begin exploring the mysterious creatures that live on the sea floor, whether you’re a student, a teacher, or just someone who enjoys watching fish glide by. If you find yourself soothed by the motion but don’t want to invest in an aquarium, download the next best thing, a fish screensaver.
Because the ocean routinely faces man-made threats to its wildlife, websites often post news items and conservation updates. To encourage people to get involved, they also describe local projects to preserve reefs, clean up pollution, and monitor the sea animal population. Here you can discover suggestions for saving the oceans by doing simple things like properly disposing of chemicals and supporting political candidates with proven commitment to the environment. Via organizations like Earthwatch, you can even participate in conservation expeditions to exotic locales, thereby combining grassroots action with a chance to see the world.

GOAL: 8,000
DEADLINE: 4-24-2002
Aquatic wildlife senselessly killed! Government mismanagement, which allows overfishing, destructive fishing practices, and wasteful killing of non-target ocean life resulting in Bycatch (Bycatch is the indiscriminate catching and killing of fish species and marine wildlife other than those a fishing vessel is intending to capture. Shrimp, swordfish, and tuna fisheries have particularly high amounts of bycatch), is putting America's ocean fish at risk of extinction. Combined with new, sophisticated fishing technologies humans can now catch far more fish every year than what our oceans can produce. The problems with mismanagement must be solved now if we want our ocean fish to be around for future generations. Instead of managing our ocean resources primarily for extraction we need to put conservation first.

Yet despite this, its adoption of a wide range of conservation and management measures, and a well developed institutional structure, NAFO has been unable to achieve its mandate and as of 2005, 10 stocks under NAFO’s competence are currently under moratoria. If sentient, tool making life developed in the ocean, how would it go about developing a suit, vehicle or structure to enable it to live on land.
Humans have created scuba equipment and submarines to enable them to live in or a least temporarily explore the ocean. We take all the neccessities to maintain our form of life with us
If it is assumed the lifeform has the ability to manipulate tools and equipment but needs to extract oxygen from water like a fish via the use of gills, how would it do this.
Please excuse the weirdness of the question, it came from a book I am reading, were an intelligent lifeform lives in the ocean, but uses a boat to travel its world. Most of the boat is underwater for it's living area, but some of it is on the surface and they have the ability to go there via a suit, how it works is not mentioned.

Prehaps something along the lines of the suit used in The Abyss, whereby the hero wore an astronaut-style helmet which once sealed around his head, filled up with liquid, so his head was permanently submersed inside the helmet.

Oceans in crisis
Our oceans are in crisis. Decades of overfishing and habitat destruction threaten the survival of many vital species of fish and other marine life. Entire ecosystems, including thousands of bird and mammal species , depend on now-decimated or threatened fish stocks. More subtle threats exist as well: as our greenhouse gas emissions alter the climate , flows of nutrient-rich currents may be rerouted or stopped entirely, wrecking the webs of life upon which fish, marine mammals and humans depend.
A brief history of fish
Photo by USFWS How did we get here? Humans have depended on the oceans for food and commerce for thousands of years, but any damage we inflicted in the past was generally small. We simply did not have the technology to remove more than a minor percentage of a given fish population every year except in a handful of circumstances. But industrial-scale fishing, with its massive nets and miles-long fishing lines, has dramatically increased our ability to pull fish and other marine life from the oceans since the 1950s. At first, the damage was hidden. Unlike threatened land-dwelling wildlife in forests, jungles and plains, the vast schools of the North Atlantic and other fisheries lay beneath the ocean's surface, their dwindling numbers obscured until they hit a critical tipping point and crashed.

How would you describe a marine food web? What would be in it?
In the Film Concept
Organisms interact with one another in various ways. Objective To construct a food web representative of the Gulf of California Content Science, language arts Background The interactions of organisms with other organisms and with their physical environment form the basis of the study of ecology. Food chains and webs are often used to portray these interactions. Plants ( producers consumers . Those animals that feed upon plants are called primary consumers, while animals that eat other animals are secondary or even tertiary consumers. Scavengers feed on dead organisms, while decomposers break down nonliving organic matter into materials that again are available to enter the food chain as nutrients . Nutrients of the marine ecosystem tend to settle to the bottom. Upwelling of cool water brings the nutrients closer to the surface where they are available to phytoplankton (very small plants drifting in the sea). The phytoplankton, in turn, become food for zooplankton (very small ocean animals) and larger organisms. Mysids (tiny shrimp), barnacles, fish, sponges, sharks, dolphins, and sea birds are just some of the many animals seen in

"The problems we have today will not be solved by thinking the way we thought when we created them."
- Albert Einstein We thought the ocean was an inexhaustible source of food. And that it would always regenerate more creatures to replace those we remove. But today's ocean is failing to produce fish as it did in the past, and the reason increasingly appears to be an overall decline in marine nutrient cycling Simple starvation now increasingly limits the growth of fish and other marine life. "Overfishing" appears to have affected not only the targeted species, but the ecosystem in general ...and ramifications of this disturbance may extend as far as the ocean-atmosphere CO2 balance.
photo: IFAW copied from harpseals.org 2005: Stop the Canadian harp seal hunt! The slaughter of seals only starves fish, and the massive waste, tons of seal corpses left to rot , kills bottom life, including the endangered cod. We have relied for too long on our initial misperceptions about how the living ocean 'works.' The articles on this website are an attempt to fit the puzzle pieces together in a different way, and to stimulate debate. The standard view still holds that the sea contains plenty of food for young cod in the North Atlantic...but reality clashes with theory:

Director of the Ocean Life Institute Introduction
As part of this national dialogue, the Ocean Life Institute of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution hosted this Symposium on Marine Protected Areas on August 27-29, 2001. The meeting was the second in our series called “Fisheries, Oceanography and Society”, which is intended to explore various aspects of fisheries as they affect marine science, conservation, economics and social structure. The aim of the current symposium was to provide a broad view of current thinking about marine protected areas. This included the perspectives of various stakeholder groups, some favorable to MPAs and some with reservations. The meeting also placed emphasis on the scientific theory and practice that are fundamental to the rational planning and management of reserves in varied ocean environments. Most of the discussion of MPAs in this meeting was about no-take reserves, at least for some species.
