Objective: Students will learn facts about various species of whales (humpback, gray, killer, etc.)
Objective Students will work in cooperative groups to practice sharing, listening and respecting each other.
Day One
1. Introduce theme by reading aloud the Big Book "As Big As a Whale" by Melvin Berger
(or any factual whale book). 2. Whole group Brainstorm facts learned from the read aloud. List the facts on a chart, or paper or overhead.
Day Two
1. Brief review In small groups of 4-5, students will list at least 4 facts they recall from the read aloud. 2. Ask one volunteer from each group to come forward to pick a name from a "whale bag" - this becomes the team's group name as well as their research topic example - humpback, gray, etc. 3. Teacher supplies to each group a whale fact sheet and several informational books. *each member must research one of these facts to contribute to group project (cooperative structure).

Top 10: Weirdest Deep-Sea Creatures
By Autumn C. Koerbel
Entertainment Correspondent - Every 2nd Wednesday
Not much is known about the underwater world of the deep sea, which is home to many strange creatures. The majority of these species have never even been viewed by humans in their natural habits, probably because they live at tremendous depths below the ocean's surface. These beings, some of which have been recently discovered, are known to live under very extreme conditions, including high pressure, drastic temperature changes, and darkness. In addition, little sunlight, if any, reaches beyond 3,000 feet; no wavelengths can be absorbed and for these creatures, the world is dark. As a result, most fish have acquired adaptations that allow them to "produce" their own light a process called bioluminescence. Forget about the Loch Ness Monster; it's time to check out some real-life monsters of the sea.

Content
This is volume three in a four volume ocean life series produced by Sumeria. The text was written by Robert Myers, the author of Micronesia Reef Fishes I enjoyed reviewing Ocean Life . The music created an exciting mood and the action video at the beginning were enough to get me hooked. The contents screen appears after a few minutes of video. The first item is the family index which shows small pictures of the fish family that the user may click on to get more information on different fish in this area as well as underwater movie clips. The user may then read the text, or follow along while it is narrated. A short paragraph or two gives both the common and Latin name, and a brief description of the species and its habits. A map of the reef area where this species lives is included on the screen. The next item in the contents is the morphology section, which shows a fish with all body parts labeled. When different parts of the body are clicked with the mouse, different variations of body type appear for different fish types. For example, if the caudal fin is clicked, a sketch of six other types of caudal fins inherent to other fish types appears. Section three provides interesting aspects of Reef Life such as feeding, brooding, defense, and locomotion of different fish species. Charts and maps which follow show each of the Hawaiian Islands. The last section plays all the different fish species information segments.

Ocean and Oceanography:
A great body of salt water comprising all the oceans and seas that cover nearly three-fourths of the surface of the earth, and the scientific study of the physical, chemical, and the biological aspects of the so-called world ocean. The major goals of oceanography are to understand the geologic and geo-chemical processes involved in the evolution and alteration of the ocean and its basin, to evaluate the interaction of the ocean and the atmosphere so that greater knowledge of climactic variations can be attained, and to describe how the biological productivity in the sea is controlled.
The world ocean covers 71 percent of the earth's surface, or about 361 million square kilometers, or about 140 million square miles. Its average depth is 5000m or 16,000 ft., and its total volume is about 1,347,000,000 cubic km, or 332,3000,000 cubic miles!

"OCEAN PLANET" MARINE LIFE FACTS
  • The oceans contain 99 percent of the living space on the planet.
  • The blue whale, Balaenoptera musculus, is the largest known animal ever to have lived on sea or land. Individuals can reach more than 110 feet and weigh nearly 200 tons_more than the weight of 50 adult elephants. The blue whale's blood vessels are so broad that a full-grown trout could swim through them, and the vessels serve a heart the size of a small car.
  • Hydrothermal vents, fractures in the sea floor that spew sulphur compounds, support the only complex ecosystem known to run on chemicals, rather than energy from the sun. Gigantic tubeworms and mussels thrive in densities of up to 65 pounds per square foot around vents.
  • The oarfish, Regalecus glesne, is the longest bony fish in the world. With its snakelike body_sporting a magnificent red fin along its 50-foot length_horselike face and blue gills, it accounts for many sea-serpent sightings.
  • Green turtles can migrate more than 1,400 miles to lay their eggs.

Ocean Life: Mammals -Characteristics
Mammals are a group of vertebrates (animals that have a backbone). Certain characteristics separate them from all other animals: mammals breathe air through lungs, give birth to live young, produce milk for their young, are warm-blooded, and have hair or fur. They also have relatively large brains and a variety of tooth sizes and shapes. Marine mammals have adapted to life in the ocean. More than 100 mammals depend on the ocean for most or all of their life needs. Marine mammals have all the characteristics of mammals, but they have different appearances and survival strategies.

A manatee cow and calf (courtesy of NOAA). Marine mammals are divided into three orders: Carnivora Sirenia and Cetacea . Within the order Carnivora are the pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, walruses), the sea otter, and the polar bear. Polar bears are closely related to bears like the grizzly, but are considered marine mammals since they have adopted a marine lifestyle. The order Sirenia is composed of manatees and dugongs (or sea cows), and the order Cetacea includes whales, dolphins, and porpoises.

Myrtle is approximately 60 years old. She is housed in the New England Aquarium's landmark coral reef exhibit along with 700 fish and two other turtles. Despite the challenges related to working with a turtle and the distractions inherent to working with an individual animal in an exhibit environment, a training protocol and an experimental design have been developed making it possible to test Myrtle's hearing capabilities.

Ocean Life
Fishes can be found in almost all large bodies of water in either salt, brackish or fresh water, at depths ranging from just below the surface to several thousand meters. However, hyper-saline lakes like the Great Salt Lake do not support fish. Some species of fish have been specially bred to be kept and displayed in an aquarium.
Fish are an important source of food. Other water-dwelling animals such as mollusks and crustaceans (commonly called shellfish) are often considered as fish when used as food. Catching fish for the purpose of food or sport is known as fishing. The annual yield from all fisheries worldwide is about 100 million tonnes.
Overfishing is a threat to many species of fish. On May 15, 2003, the journal Nature reported that all large oceanic fish species worldwide had been so systematically overcaught that fewer than 10% of 1950 levels remained.
Particularly imperilled were sharks, Atlantic cod, Bluefin tuna, and Pacific sardines. The authors recommended immediate, drastic cutbacks in fish catches and reservation of ocean habitats worldwide.

Our goal is to assure there is "fish for the future." This public effort will include holding public community meetings to further discuss, refine and review a proposed framework for marine managed areas. The process will begin with focus group meetings with stakeholders in each county and will include discussions with all affected agencies and will report back to the BLNR with further recommendations. Some confusion exists about marine managed areas being automatically "no take" (no fishing permitted) areas. Actually, many marine managed areas, as well as marine protected areas, permit fishing and other uses.
