UNDER THE SEA The children will discover what lives under the water. Materials needed Blue and green crayons Cheese grater Wax paper Iron Sea animal shapes Towel What to do: 1. Cut out shapes of sea animals (fish, octopus, sea horse, crab, star fish, etc.) Peel paper off crayons. Heat iron away from children. Have two pieces of wax paper for each child. Place grater on top of one piece of wax paper. 2. Let the children rub the crayons on the grater. 3. Let the children add animal shapes to their picture. 4. Place another piece of wax paper on top of picture. 5. Put picture on top of towel. 6. The teacher can iron the wax paper together. Press lightly and the children can see steam and feel heat coming off of iron. Watch how the iron melts the crayons and it makes it seem like ocean water. 7. Hang in window when finished *Examine real ocean water If you are near a beach, visit or have someone bring in a bucket of ocean water to examine what's in it. *Walk with children this week on the ocean floor. See what it is like to sleep under water, watch rainbow fish swimming above your head, avoid a barracuda's sharp teeth, discover "super star" starfish, and delight in the spongey texture of a special school of fish all in the diving helmet you made yourself from a simple grocery sack. Use this time to introduce opposite-type of concepts such as wet/dry. We used a book called *Wet or Dry*... it was a collection of photos, and each child took turns answering the question, "Wet or dry?" There are many wonderful books that will emphasize fun with ocean life at the library... hurry there and check out a bunch!

Deep-Sea Bestiary
by Peter Tyson
The ocean depths are home to a phantasmagoria of bizarre creatures, ranging from the footballfish to the "vampire squid from hell." Living in the dark at crushing depths, the animals below are rarely seen by human beings. The photographs, which are of deceased creatures brought up from the deep, were shot by famed underwater photographer Norbert Wu. The drawings, by celebrated marine artist Richard Ellis, appear in his book Deep Atlantic: Life, Death, and Exploration in the Abyss (Knopf, 1996). Click on any of the pictures below to see the full view.
This comely female anglerfish, Cryptopsaras couesi, has attracted not one but two tiny parasitic males (see drawing). The males have permanently attached themselves to her side to facilitate breeding (as is typical of most anglerfish). Perhaps she has particularly appealing caruncles, the three luminescent sacs just forward of her dorsal fin, which lend her her common name, "triplewart sea devil." Along with the lightable lure above her eye, the caruncles may also help entice prey to within striking distance of this 18-inch-long fish.

This helpful book explains how waves, sand and pebbles form at the seashore and describes animals, plants and shells which can be seen when the tide goes out. LeVar uses this feature book when he goes beachcombing in southwestern Florida. There he meets two local naturalists who help him explore plant and animal life (shells, mangroves, oysters, spiny burn fish, scallops, sea stars, etc.) at the shoreline and in the shallows of the Gulf. New species of underwater life, including a giant sea spider and armoured shrimps, have been discovered by a expedition trawling in deep water northwest of New Zealand. Behold fangtooth Researchers on a joint NZ and Australian voyage also found deep-sea sponges and a prickly shark. The scientists have just returned from four weeks aboard the Research Vessel Tangaroa collecting and photographing species at depths up to 2.1 kilometres (1.3 miles). According to Mark Norman, of Victoria Museum in Australia, the survey around Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands was the most complex research expedition ever conducted in Australasia. "Many species new to science were recognised, including new sharks and rays, redfish, rattails, and a range of invertebrates," he says. Each way bet The wonky-eyed squid One newly discovered creature, called the fangtooth, has teeth longer than its head. To avoid piercing its own brain when it shuts its mouth, its teeth fit into opposing sockets.

BBC News Online staff
A new species of scorpionfish was discovered More than 600 new species of fish have been discovered by a major ocean census and thousands more may be lurking undetected.
Some 300 scientists from 53 countries are creating a record of all known marine life, in a project reminiscent of an aquatic Domesday Book. The 10-year Census of Marine Life project will form an open database of raw material available to everyone. It will pinpoint endangered animals and suggest how to protect them. Pole to pole So far, 15,304 species of fish have been logged. Between 2,000 and 3,000 more are expected to join the list before the census ends in 2010 - and many will be previously unknown species. We are at the start of a great adventure, like going to the moon
