... [Text Version] Walleye Sander vitreus Identifying characteristics: Two dorsal fins separated into a spiny and a soft-rayed portion, cloudy eye, white tips on anal and lower caudal fins, canine teeth. Walleye are the largest member of the perch family. They lack the distinctive vertical bar makings of the yellow perch and have fan-like canine teeth. These battling fish are exciting to catch, delicious to eat and because they feed actively all winter, they provide a fine year-round sport fishery. In spring and fall walleyes congregate in shallow bay waters of the great Lakes, where they seek out rocky areas and submerged bars. During the bright part of the day they retreat in schools to the shade of deep waters or submerged objects. In the summer, walleyes range into cooler, deeper waters. They prefer a water temperature of 55 to 68 degrees F and are seldom found in waters deeper than 50 feet. Walleyes are greedy predators. They eat small bass, trout, pike, perch and sunfishes. Prime feeding times are early morning and evening. Although in turbid waters walleyes are active throughout the day. Walleyes often associate with yellow perch, smallmouth bass, northern pike and muskellunge.

A Family Tradition since 1932 PRODUCTS - If it can be done to a freshwater fish Stoller Fisheries can do it for you.
Stoller Fisheries specializes in fish products from freshwater fish, and all of its products are kosher under supervision from Star-K. Stoller Fisheries operates under HACCP and has been assigned an export approval number from the United States Food and Drug Administration. Stoller Fisheries also produces a full line of fish caviars, commercial baits, byproducts from fish waste, and engages in custom processing.
Feature 1:
PLATE-FROZEN FISH BLOCKS The supply of plate-frozen fish blocks from either mechanically deboned (minced) fish and small filets is becoming more and more scarce from traditionally species such as COD. Stoller Fisheries is investigating the installation of a plate freezer to plate freeze blocks of filets and mechanically deboned fish from under utilized species of fresh water fish such as carp, buffalo fish, fresh water sheep head, and fresh water suckers. Custom processing is available.
Feature 2:
SOUP BASES AND FISH STOCKS
As a primary processor Stoller Fisheries is capable of mincing (mechanically deboning) up to 60,000 pounds of under utilized species of fresh water fish daily. These fish include the common carp, buffalo fish, fresh water sheep head (drum), fresh water sucker (also known as the fresh water mullet) and many other species. The company can also mechanically debone salmon and ocean species. There is a growing demand for minced fish to be used as dehydrated soup bases and as fish stocks and Stoller Fisheries can custom process these fish for your needs. Please direct your inquiry to either Tom Opheim or Larry Stoller.

Some puffer fish look a little bit like a beagle dog without the ears. Don't let looks fool you. Their four large teeth - two on top, two on the bottom - are sharp enough to sever a finger. Several species also have spikes sticking out of their skin. When it becomes alarmed, a puffer fish puffs itself up with water or air and makes a squeaky noise. There are about 120 species of puffer fish or blowfish, globefish and fugu as they are also called. They grow up to 50 cm (20 in) long. They can puff themselves up because they have elastic skin and no ribs. Puffer fish live in the tropical and subtropical parts of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. They blend in with coral and prefer to stay near the bottom of the ocean where they can feed on molluscs and crustaceans. Sharks tend to eat puffer fish and so do humans. Eating fish isn't unusual except puffer fish are fatally poisonous. Angry Puffer Fish In Japan they are a delicacy after the poison has been removed but eating them can still be fatal. About 100 diners die each year after eating puffer fish.

Home This site is intended to be used mainly as an identification guide to enable you to decide which of the many species of freshwater tropical fish available, would be best suited to you. The task of creating and maintaining a simulated natural environment within the confines of a small aquarium should not be a problem for you if you're prepared and set up the tank carefully and make regular tests to ensure that a balance is being maintained. Once a suitable environment has been achieved, the successful breeding of fish, and the fascination of watching the fry develop is ample reward for the time and trouble taken.

This Mekong giant catfish was weighed at 646 pounds by researchers working on a project to identify, study and conserve large freshwater fish around the world.
MSNBC Thai fishermen netted a catfish as big as a grizzly bear, setting a world record for the largest freshwater fish ever found, according to researchers who studied the 646-pound Mekong giant catfish as part of a project to protect large freshwater fish. "It's amazing to think that giants like this still swim in some of the world's rivers," project leader Zeb Hogan project leader said in a statement. "We've now confirmed now that this catfish is the current record holder, an astonishing find." Others have made claims of finding larger sturgeon, but the International Game Fishing Association says the largest sturgeon on record is 468 pounds. That fish has also held the record for largest freshwater fish caught. "I'm thrilled that we've set a new record, but we need to put this discovery in context: these giant fish are uniformly poorly studied and some are critically endangered," added Hogan, a fellow with the World Wildlife Fund, which is partnering with the National Geographic Society. "Some, like the Mekong giant catfish, face extinction."

NZ Freshwater Fish Database
The New Zealand Freshwater Fish Database (NZFFD) records the occurrence of fish in fresh waters of New Zealand, including major offshore islands. We maintain the database at our Wellington campus. Data stored include the site location, the species present, their abundance and size, as well as information such as the fishing method used and a physical description of the site. The latter includes an assessment of the habitat type, substrate type, available fish cover, catchment vegetation, riparian vegetation, water widths and depths, and some water quality measures. Data, which are recorded in the field on pre-printed forms (see a sample record ), are contributed voluntarily by NIWA, fish and game councils, the Department of Conservation, regional councils, environment consultants, universities, and interested individuals. Access to the data requires registration and users are encouraged to contribute data.

The information contained herein represents collected data and in no way is to be construed as the original work of this author. The goal in presenting this information was to provide a single comprehensive comparison of the various freshwater shrimp species mentioned in the aquarium hobby. I wish first to thank the many individuals who helped in the development of this article by offering their advice and direction, as well as by providing some of the information found herein. A complete list of these individuals is at the end of this article. Approximately seven (7) different varieties of shrimp are mentioned in reference to freshwater aquaria : Yamato Numa Ebi/ Caridina spp. , Ghost/Grass, Wood/Singapore, Rock/Mountain, Bumble Bee, Macrobrachium and Neocaridina spp. These shrimp are kept primarily as detritus and/or algae consumers. Shrimp of the genus Macrobrachium, however, do not provide any use to the aquarist in general. Although they could possibly be kept as a novelty for their own sake. In addition to these shrimp, there are other aquatic invertebrates which are often encountered by aquarists. These are: crayfish (which are harvested mainly for human consumption as are Macrobrachium shrimp), CYCLOPS, B Gammarus and Daphnia (which are not true shrimp). These crustaceans are used primarily as fish food or bait. These invertebrates are described in more detail in the
