Gallery of artist Pat Brown carves and paints freshwater fish from southern Illinois and other areas.
http://siffa.com/
Folk Artist Pat Brown first discovered his gift about 10 years ago when he started to shape scrap pieces of wood into a variety of different fish. His work includes fish that could be found in local Southern Illinois lakes, rivers, and streams. Since his daughter moved to Northwest Washington state he now creates pieces that are found in that region. His fish folk art includes both two and three dimensional pieces and paintings. In addition, he has used a number of other ways to present his work.

FISH, FRESHWATER
There are some 40 species of freshwater fish in New Zealand, 10 of which have been introduced from other countries. The native species are contained in 11 families. They are believed to have evolved from marine ancestors during New Zealand's geological history; in fact, most of the families still have species which inhabit or can tolerate salt water at some stage of their life cycle. There is one species of lamprey (Geotridae), Geotria australis , which also occurs in Australia and South America. The eels (Anguillidae) are represented by two species, the long-finned eel, Anguilla dieffenbachii , and the short-finned eel, A. australis schmidtii . The family Galaxiidae contains the most species ( c. 18); there is no common name for this group apart from “the galaxias”, which is preferable to the ambiguous term “native trout” often applied. Many of the Galaxias species are rare and known only by specialists. The commoner ones include Galaxias attenuatus , the inanga, whitebait, or “minnow”. Galaxias fasciatus , the kokopu or banded galaxias, is found throughout the country.

  • Freshwater Aquariums From " Company of Animals "
    episode COA-122 advertisement
Neon tetras are good community fish. Bottom feeders such as these catfish are good additions to a home aquarium. It isn't a snale: it's a Sicilian, an amphibian that only looks like one. Setting up a freshwater aquarium requires only a few simple steps:
  • Place an under-gravel filter on the bottom of the tank.
  • Attach an air hose from a tube to the air pump. The filter brings in air and draws waste under the gravel where bacteria break it down into nontoxic waste products.
  • Wash the gravel and place it in the tank.
  • Decorate the tank with real or plastic plants, wood or tiny figurines (be sure to use items that are safe for use in aquariums check with your aquarium store if you're not sure).
  • Prefloat your new fish in the tank in their plastic bags for a couple of hours. If you don't prefloat them, the fish will go into shock and die when they're placed in the tank.
  • Use an aquarium thermometer to test the water temperature. When it reaches the green zone, the temperature is safe for the fish.
