Fisheries Division Kingcombe Aquacare offers a comprehensive range of fisheries management and environmental monitoring services, often working for, or in conjunction with the Environmental Agency. The company carries out electric fishing surveys and seine netting contracts, as well as supplying stock fish and rescuing and storing fish prior to engineering works. Trained staff can carry out river habitat surveys and environmental impact monitoring before and after engineering works, for in-house and external projects. Electrofishing A large roach ready to be returned Seine netting Case Study. Client: Dorchester Fishing Club Description of Contract: Since 1987 Kingcombe Aquacare has been responsible for carrying out predator control by annual electric fishing on the River Frome for the clients. During this time close records have been maintained of the pike caught and removed and the numbers of brown trout in the river. The improvement to the fishery has been significant and sustained. In 1987 over 80 pike were culled, up to 18lbs weight. Less than 200 trout were recorded over the 5 mile stretch of river. In 1998 less than 20 pike were found, none in excess of 7 lbs. However, over 600 trout 6"+ were now recorded, along with a great number of salmon parr. As a result, the Club has been able to reduce its stocking costs and is now actively encouraging wild brown trout to thrive once again.

I. THE PROBLEM
2. In addition to the above resolutions, there are a number of obligations imposed on countries by the United Nations Agreement for the conservation and management of straddling fish stocks and highly migratory fish stocks (August 1995). 3. The suggestion in a recent FAO Fishery Technical Paper (No 339) that about 27 million tons, ranging between 18 and 39 million tons, of fish per year may be discarded at sea, in pursuit of the total annual marine capture fishery for direct human consumption of about 50 million tons, has brought the problem home to the public at large. As part of the response the Government of Japan hosted a Technical Consultation on the Reduction of Wastage in Fisheries in collaboration with FAO. The Consultation was held in Tokyo from 28 October to 1 November 1996 and set outto refine the earlier estimates as well as to discuss solutions to the issues of wastage. The discussions and conclusions of the Consultation are reflected in this information paper. II. DEFINITIONS

Welcome to The Fish List You have the power to choose fish that are better for the environment and for you. Each of us has been witness to the ecological impact that overfishing and destructive fishing practices can have on world fisheries like Chilean sea bass, orange roughy, and Atlantic trawled cod. Fish farming can be a welcome alternative to depleting wild fisheries, but farming certain species such as Atlantic salmon can pose its own set of environmental problems. But, there is good news. There are plenty of great tasting, ocean-friendly seafood choices available. You can make a difference by choosing seafood caught or farmed in a way that minimizes harm to the ocean creatures and the environment. By recognizing that all seafood is not created equal, you can begin to make choices that are good for you and better for the planet. The Fish List is a fast, easy-to-use tool that helps you make the best possible seafood choices.
